I so respect Mike Waters and all he’s done as an ace beat reporter for SU basketball for nearly 40 years. But I think he’s lost some perspective on his beat and wouldn’t have taken him for a Red dead ender. This feels like a clueless comment.

What? The school would effectively be punting on the basketball program next year if they did that. Zero NIL and Red would be coaching a roster worse than last year. We’d put up less than 5 wins and have a NET ranking in the mid 200’s. That would go down as one of the worst college basketball coaching decisions in a very long time.

He basically slipped up and gave his opinion, which is a pretty insane opinion to have. Red is a demonstrably mediocre to bad head coach. I know they have different roles but I have really appreciated Chris Carlson’s more unvarnished honesty and skepticism.

Having listened to it, I don't think he's in any way suggesting that should happen. He said it more in the tone of who knows, anything is possible. And as a journalist he didn't want to actively takes sides.

This tweet is a dumb take IMO. Watch the whole interview with Waters. This small clip is misleading. Not only that, but even if you watch just this clip, Mike practically choked on those words when he says “which I’d be fine with, whatever”, looking down as he says it. My observation is he heard the question, and started verbally thinking through the question and realized he kind of dug himself a hole with the “depends who the coach is” part of his answer so had to maintain his impartiality. Just my 2 cents.
