I cant beleive Hop is even a possibility at this point...

if youre gonna promote from within he would be my last choice out of him and the 3 current assistants.

He's got head coaching experience at least.

I mean we're gonna hand the reigns to an assistant with no head coaching experience at Syracuse, with the 34K dome crowd and as a P5 ACC conference member??

Times have changed. I'd be shocked if Wildhack even considered this.

I mean we're not in the missouri valley conference - tho we played like it at points this year.

Was OK for our ACC bretheren UNC and Duke.

When did UNC or Duke have 6 seasons of 8 with 13 losses in them?
The comment was in response to the OP asking who would give their big time program to an asst with no HC experience. UNC and Duke have both done it (Hubert Davis at UNC and Jon Scheyer at Duke).

I get that but as RF has said those programs went for continuation in their programs.
Those programs may have a down year every once in a while but those programs are rolling each year.

Syracuse isn’t in the same position as those programs. We have been irrelevant nationally during the regular season for a while now.

We don’t want continuation. Red or Hopkins right now don’t get much patience.
Hubert Davis is going to get some heat next year if they are like this year.

I gotta be honest, I don't have an opinion on Red as I can't even remember seeing him speak. For those who have or who know him to one degree or another - what is your take? BB acumen - teaching ability - dynamism/recruiting chops - stay 100% zone - or whatever else is relevant.

Huh? I was answering a question that was posed about assistant coaches being promoted from within a program to the head job. Had nothing to do with up and coming, hot-name coaches.

Which is the alternative for many.

That's 12 games out of 232. And that Final 4 was six years ago with three future NBA players on the team. It wasn't mediocre talent that season.
Ah - you’re in the regular season is more important than the way every major team actually measures itself kinda guy

Only 6 years ago? My bad we had talent and system that year. You’re def right

Thanks for the update. Not saying it would be a precedent but can anyone list a few programs that hired in house assistants as the head coach and turned the program into a powerhouse?
If Cole Swider is the featured player next year, really based on one game (Carolina) I cannot see it. He cannot beat his man off the dribble. He will draw the ACC top athletic defenders. He can barely go left - is right handed exclusively. Defense is fair at best, on and on. Basically a catch and shoot dude. Has a big heart but has limitations.
Syracuse.

How about actually having 4 scholarship guards so we do not repeat the same depth problems we had this season??
Mintz would give us 4 scholarship guards. Copeland can burn his redshirt if there are any long-term injuries.

And that’s not even counting Bunch and Taylor.

This is what I heard last night from my connection (long chat about the AAU scene, college bball in general and we went into cuse full circle). This info is as of 3.4.2022 and things can change (please don't go after my throat if one or two of these things change).

Roster next year-
Apparently, we are in the driver's seat with Mintz right now. It's going to be between us and Wake Forest for him with NC state and Depaul having guard commits here recently. Jimmy has told him about a starting role and he would be along side JG3 for the starting backcourt. If he comes, we would run 3 guards with Copeland redshirting/sitting all year. The coaches will have to get his buy-in with this because his first year was labeled as spot minutes/back up mins and he won't get that with a Mintz commit.
Cole is 50/50 to stay (Jimmy even mentioned it). JB will ask him to stay one more year and put together some solid tape to possibly get drafted ala Hughes. He will be the featured player on the roster and gives JB someone he trusts. With this AND if Benny stays, we won't tap into the transfer market for a forward. Benny leaves, we will.
Frank is 50/50 as well. According to my connection, the game is still moving a lil too fast for him but he knows he could start at various places. He knows he would get 20 minutes again next year with Jesse back so he's weighing his options to go or not. Might do the JBA way and put his name in to get feedback/interest from other schools and decide to come back. If he goes, we will get a center/forward transfer because Peter is not ready yet.
JBA, Buddy, Jimmy Jr gone obviously.

Coaches Retirement/His interview the other day-
Apparently, coach was feeling the heat/pressure to speak up about the so called "plan" from booster/fans/JW. My connection kept harping on the term "succession plan" always means "in house" . He said watch the smaller school openings and if one of the assistants bolt for it, Hop is most likely to get let go at UW and he could slide back home for a year than take over. He said that's all a big if but could happen. Likelihood it's Red for the takeover and he will be the lead recruiter for the 2023 cycle. Still hasn't ruled out JB calling it in the summer time, exact quote " I get he promised these income recruits he was going to coach them but with both sons leaving, why?". JW is hearing all the chatter and criticism and knows something needs to happen soon. JB has and will have input in the hire but not full.

Might be new news or not but just wanted to share.
Mintz is ours

Look at what Wildhack has done at SU from an HR perspective. Everything points to creative continuity within the organization.

Let’s start with Lax. Certainly it was an unusual situation, but he hired within the existing department, and bolstered the staff with a well financed support staff with Petro. It likely all started with a “it’s time” discussion with Desko. Measured, smart, efficient, but bold restructuring, (woman’s lax, was also the best qualified Syracuse connection available).

Now football. Again, program continuity preserved with creative and well-financed support with the hire of the new assistants.

I think we agree, all these make a lot of sense from not only the ADs perspective, but from fans as well.

Woman’s hoops. Perhaps a shaky initial response to Q’s issues, but paving the way for Leggette to come back looks like again the best available Syracuse connect will be the choice here. Hard to argue with hire.

Why do people think he’s going to change his MO for hoops?

My guess is Hop gets the first call and if it’s a no, then it’s Red and the assistant coaching staff gets overhauled with an emphasis on recruiting and likely an experienced former HC, sorta like what Michigan did with Martelli.

People are overthinking it and replacing the obvious with wishful thinking

I think they hit the portal for another /C. I would put odds of leaving like this

Bol 90-100
Frank 70-80
Jesse 50
Benny. 50
Cole 30
Sy 20
Bol tried to leave last year? What has changed? Unless he's finally fine with dropping down a level.

As far as I am concerned any candidate who will affirmatively answer the following questions is OK by me:

1. If hired will you agree to not play 100% Zone defense ?

2. Will you agree to coach an O that is not 100% iso-ball ?

3. Will you agree to have a full roster ?
Completely bad post. Any winds of change need to be free to blow away everything, if needed. Coach himself insists he's done with influencing the program once he's outta here.

When Hop was named the Coach in waiting nothing good ended up coming from that. Doubt they would go down that road again.

I think Red would make a solid choice as long as he is not committed to 100% Zone.

Or have a much clearer understanding of how long the next coach in waiting will be waiting.

I think Franks odds drastically change if Jesse leaves . But I think Jesse might bolt . Cross our fingers because Jesse is the key to a good year.

Agreed. I should probably have Jesse a little higher and frank a little lower
