What I'm hearing

I don't know. Seems like if you think the system and the talent is the problem, the Sweet 16 runs and weird 11 seed FF with mediocre talent are probably a stumbling block for your argument.

If you think it's talent and the system is good, in-house with an updated recruiting plan, NIL, transfer portal etc makes more sense. This is also the case with "JB is an old school guy who PO the modern player and that is bad with the transfer portal"... I think this is the prevailing thought with ADW.

I you think it's system and the talent is fine - you're nuts. JK. I think there's a "the system is keeping us from high end talent" argument to make - but there's a lot of other competing things in the recruiting bucket that makes that case difficult to make, IMO.

also if we're using common sense - a plan (succession, ironclad, good/bad/ugly) means in-house because it's not like we could say "1 more year for JB then we're hiring Ed Cooley"

Even if it was Hop... still not likely to be handled already

Would Red play something other than zone and ISO ball?

I mean how do we know.

Hop has shown he basically does what JB did and it’s disappointing.
I don't know if Hop will factor into the possibilities. But I wouldn't be surprised if he did - IF he is released from UW. As for playing style, this is from Hop's most recent PC:

  • "Hopkins noted that they've made it more of a hybrid -- switching up from man to zone and vice versa -- but said he's not set on the zone, he just wants to get wins and if that means playing more man-to-man, he's fine with going that route"
My guess would be that Red will think the same way - IF Red is the choice.

This is exactly how I expect the transition to occur. It will be an in-house or familiar face replacement. We are not going to see a full-blown search this time around. People expecting that are going to be extremely disappointed. JB wanted GMAC as his successor and he was told no. So red as the in-house successor makes sense unless Hop can be shaken free from Washington. Even if he’s let go from Washington I’m not sure hop comes here. He’s likely going to go to the NBA.
Hop would rather be an assistant in the NBA than the head coach at Syracuse? I know you’re plugged into Hop, but I don’t know if that makes sense. But maybe I’m misunderstanding what you’re saying.

Remember when the Millers were the hot young coaches? Would we want them now?
Huh? I was answering a question that was posed about assistant coaches being promoted from within a program to the head job. Had nothing to do with up and coming, hot-name coaches.

I take it to mean take a break from college and rebuild his reputation. Jake's posted it before.

I just can't believe we will finally have the job opening for the first time in what seems like 100 years and we are just going to blindly turn around and give it to an assistant. A well-respected assistant in AAU who can't bring in major talent even though he is well respected. Who is also so well thought of that he can't get interviews for anything other coaching jobs in the past decade?

I just can't be sold on it no matter how many times I tried to sell myself on it.

I’m saying there’s no way he’s coming back as an asssistant under JB to take over the program a year later. If it’s straight to HC, that’s different.

Red is highly respected by AAU coaches. I just don't know that there is that it factor when he walks in to a gym. honestly, and G and Griff are true Orangemen and deserve our love, but I would hope they would both find greener pastures and have Red go out and get two rainmaker recruiters. As for making Gerry the next coach, how can they sell that when Red is higher than he is on the pecking order right now?
You really only need one rainmaker, Troy Weaver type, and said person would fill Red’s slot if he became head coach. Griff’s results would be better without his hands tied by JB. Not sure what to make of Gmac’s recruiting chops. There’s not a lot to point to there but his hands have also been tied.

But that only makes sense if Hop can only get an assistant coaching job post-Washington. Yes, it would make a lot of sense to take an NBA assistant job over a college one right now. But if he’s offered the Syracuse head coaching job, logically he’d jump at that in a second (it’s his alma mater and he was a assistant here for 20+ years) over being an NBA assistant.

Get that bearded dude on Oates staff forgot his name. Bryan Donaldson or something?

For those of us who want a big time coach, I heard from Goodman on sirius, that both Mick Cronin and Oates have buyouts of $12 mill as their names have came up for Louisville and MD. So if we go big and outside, the buy outs at the Power 5 that play football are probably too high. But they probably are not as big for those coaches in the Big East and other non-major football leagues below them like A10 etc.

I cant beleive Hop is even a possibility at this point...

if youre gonna promote from within he would be my last choice out of him and the 3 current assistants.

If we are staying within family (disappointing) he at least has head coaching experience, albeit not great results.

He has to use Washington as an opp to learn from his mistakes. Like Ed Orgeron at Ole Miss, flamed out but won a Natty. Kiffin at USC now rehabed and respected, etc.

"Oats received a three-year extension which now runs to March 14 2027 and will pay a total compensation of $3.225 million annually.

The contract also features a significant buyout clause should Oats move on to another job. If he leaves during the 2021-22 season he’d owe Alabama roughly $12.57 million. That figure goes down to $9.83 million in 2022-23 before dropping to roughly $6.96 million in 2023-24 and $2.41 million in 2024-25. Oats does not have buyout in either of the two final years on his contract."

As far as I am concerned any candidate who will affirmatively answer the following questions is OK by me:

1. If hired will you agree to not play 100% Zone defense ?

2. Will you agree to coach an O that is not 100% iso-ball ?

3. Will you agree to have a full roster ?
