What to make of the Benny minutes.

Thought he was a ball stopper and we looked the worst with him on the court. I’m struggling to see his role right now in a perimeter based offense.

What to make of it?

Benny needs to be on a short diet of minutes, period, unless and until he shows effort on D and rebounding.

Is Red going to reel Benny in and tell him how he needs to play? Based on watching all sorts of bad shots, it seems like Red doesn't want to limit players like JB did. Good for recruiting and retaining players, could be bad for winning games.
This is coaching though. All the greats in college conform players to their system, offense and defense.

Hopefully Red reels all the players into whatever offensive system he is trying to run. I cannot imagine it is everyone standing around the arc and firing shots after 1 touch.

If you have a Melo or a Wallace or a DC, you can let them do what they want. But, a Benny or Bell, or pretty much anyone else, should have roles within a system.

I hope we get there.

Exciting win last night.

Benny looked completely lost and like he slowed the team down. I hope that changes but I have a feeling he doesn't have much of a role on a team like this

Outside of a couple bad shots I thought he actually moved the ball more than he usually does. But don't get me wrong -- I'm still very low on him

I don't fault Benny for going 0-4 coming off suspension, but one board? In 10 minutes? And while I'm at it, why on earth is a 6-9 live athlete without an established outside shot playing 'outside in' (like Bell)? He needs to be inside scrapping for rebounds and getting easier shots. Good effort but misplaced part of the court.

I actually though Benny was ok except for the shot selection. He kept the ball moving and played ok defense. He really has no offensive skill other than catch and shoot. Which btw he doesn’t do better than Taylor. If Benny wasn’t a five star I know we would all have a different opinion of him.

It’s his first regular season game of the season when everyone else on the floor had a game or two under their belt. I would give him a few games to get it going again.
Agree.

Give him time - no live reps against outside competition in the system yet. There’s talent on this team but not so much that there’s no role for Benny. We’re going to need him as the season goes on and hopefully he realizes his best role is a stretch 4 that can make an open shot and gets aggressive on the glass.

Stretch 4s can shoot at a respectable clip hence the stretch term. I haven't seen that from him.

You keep loling because you have nothing to say and wear Orange colored glasses. I'm going to keep it 100. The kid is one of the worst 5 stars I've seen if you go by that metric. Punching above his weight and doesn't have the mental capacity to cut it at this level as seen by him quitting on the team again and getting suspended for it this time around.

He played for IMGs Post Grad team (not the team with the killers) and looks every bit the part. Only a contingent of posters on this board thinks he's good enough to go pro and that ship has long since sailed. The way Red looks to play, Benny is going to end up transferring out at the end of the season. Probably the worst highly touted recruit since Matthew Moyer.

I am beginning to wonder about Bennies role on any team.

The bottom line with Benny is that he just doesn’t play very hard. If he’s not making shots he’s totally disengaged. He’s as soft as butter and won’t mix it up. He only goes to the offensive boards if someone is constantly screaming at him to go get the rebound. His energy level picks up when he scores, but that makes him useless if he’s not making shots. This is nothing personal against the kid, but this is his third year and he still plays the same. I would love to see a light come on, but I’m not holding my breath. Bottom line is you can’t count on him. A coach has a hard time playing someone when you never know what you’re going to get. JB gave him chance after chance and we only got glimpses of a real player. Maybe he’s just out of sink, but I doubt it.

Yeah, I think we're in the twilight here for BW... either he shows measured improvement before X-mas, or his time may be up.

Lord knows his season started poorly with the Syracuse dot com article about how he was ready for the season and that he has matured considerably... then to get immediately suspended for team violations??

Hope he turns it around and proves all naysayers wrong, of course, but the odds are looking long at this point.

We will need his rebounding. Needs to play in the paint otherwise we’re better off playing Taylor or Cope
He's got Quincy Guerrier disease, thinks his path to NBA is on the perimeter jacking 3s. Both need to.plant themselves near basket and mix it up and rebound and score on putbacks and inside moves near basket. Neither are sniffing the NBA playing on the perimeter. Their only paths are as inside specialist role players.

No no no no no, whatever Quincy’s role was here he played it, never did I question his effort, not once. These two aren’t in the same stratosphere.

that is true, he transferred so he could go to Oregon and jack 3s. Boeheim wouldn't let him do that here, JB told him he was an inside player, so Q said goodbye and now in his 5th year in college
