Why Wouldn't Dino Stay?

As you may recall, when Dino was being recruited he very early on had his agent tell schools he was done and he was not entertaining other offers. He had his job and it turned out to be Syracuse.

He had immediately understood the possibilities of the dome for his style of play. He knew he could recruit here and succeed in the ACC, as good a conference as there is.

This is a smart confident guy who took a huge pay cut to be a HC at Eastern Illinois - he bet on himself big time. That bet has paid off.

If he is happy and is winning and believes he can compete at the highest level, he will stay. He won't need the last dollar to do so either.

Just look at how Charlie Strong was treated at Texas and Sumlin at TAM. I am sure that has not escaped the attention of all potential black head coaches.

The ACC has changed things at Syracuse. We have 20 million more each year with much more on the way. We have finished paying off the Big East exit fee. We are in a great conference that has national attention.

We are a small school, but so are TCU, Miami, Baylor, Duke, UVA, Pitt, Wake Forest, Navy and even Notre Dame.

In short, at SU Dino can achieve any professional goal he may have in a far better environment for himself and his family than anywhere in the SEC or for that matter, the ACC.

I think he stays and retires here.

While housing costs are relatively moderate, the property tax rates and other rates are incredibly high. New York has heaviest state and local tax burden in nation

I'm very confident in saying that it will be very hard to pry Dino away from Syracuse... And, even if someone were to throw their all at it, Syracuse would have a chance to close the gap.

The funny part about this is I remember one of the reasons so many were thrilled when we hired Dino/one of the reasons we may have targeted him was because we knew he viewed this as his chance to build AND STAY at a program.

At any rate, I'm not going to worry about him leaving. If he eventually does, then good for him. I'll wish him luck. But I'm going to enjoy Syracuse football and remain hopeful that he'll stay and build this program up.

It better not or he gone! We can all conjecture and guess what Dino will do. At the end of the day he will have to weigh the pluses and minuses and make the best decision for he and his family. There is no reason that Syracuse can't be someone's destination job. It's a little bigger than most "college towns" but its got everything you can find in a college town and more. He will get inquiries from a lot of schools because not everyone considers Syracuse a destination job so why wouldn't he consider their school and town? Most of these will be wasting their time and Dino may never even know they were interested. Dino may actually want to settle somewhere for 10 years or so until he is ready to retire. He can pursue all his goals at SU including championships. He's coached at schools that are in all 5 power 5 conferences so he knows what is out there (disclaimer: TA&M was not in the SEC when he coached there). He also knows what comes with being at higher profile schools and has seen how those communities relate with their head coach and program. I can't remember how old his youngest child is but that can be a huge factor along with his own age. He can obviously coach longer but Dino will be 65 in 9 years. Not a lot of time to keep moving up (or to keep moving). My personal opinion is Dino is not jumping at the next good job that comes along. He probably has a very short list of places he would leave for. One school that may be at the top of that list in a few years would even be a step down in "prestige" and "national opportunity" would be the University of Hawaii. Born in Honolulu. Played for the Rainbows. From what his resume says he hasn't lived there since 1984. Might be a pretty attractive place to Dino to coach out his last few years before retirement in the islands. I have to admit that does sound a little more attractive than retirement in Manlius!

He may stay here until he retires, he may leave this year, next year, etc. The thing is, nobody knows and nobody will know until probably close to the end of the regular season. That's only $200,000 which is chump change to some of these big donors and a lot cheaper than adding a few million/year to his salary to get him to stay. Hand the tickets out in the schools, businesses, youth groups, Fort Drum, existing season ticket holders, etc. Let's show Dino that this community is on board with the program's direction and make it difficult for him to even consider leaving. Once you experience the dome's environment with 45K+ people rocking it, you won't want to miss another game.

I'm loving Dino as our coach and hope he stays a long time. I like his style of play, his ability to relate to young athletes, and his demeanor. He's a great coach. If he does leave I think it will be after he does something special here.

I think fan support has a lot to do with how long he stays. The noise in the dome on Friday, and I cheer all of you that made that happen, was and is important to him. If fans come out to help improve the program, that will be a big factor in his future plans. The real question isn't if the administration will pay him enough to stay, rather will fans fill the dome on a regular basis?

I for one am looking for a project in CNY next fall so I can be part of SU football renewal. If we want Dino to stay, 25000 people like me need to include season tickets in their plans next fall and for the foreseeable future. I love being in Colorado but think fall in CNY could be a lot of fun...

Agree, except for the absorbent tax rate in CNY. I've found other essentials relative to the cost of living in Syracuse to actually be a bit less than here in the Charlotte, NC area. But, no way around it, the taxes are absolutely brutal up there. For instance, a year after my wife & I were married, we moved down here in 1995. We sold our new/modest 3 year old 3 bedroom house in Liverpool for $110,000. Our lateral move at the time with no change in annual income afforded us a $265,000, 3400 sq. ft. house. It's a significant difference.

Funny who they pick and choose as their guy. Doeren is the one who should be getting the looks and I think Tennessee will look at Doeren and Brohm. You also have Matt Campbell out at Iowa State doing good things (4-2 with wins over #4 Oklahoma and a 3 point loss to Iowa). Everybody likes sexy though.

What Brohm is doing at Purdue is impressive imo.

...and what about the guy at San Diego State? 6-1 with wins over Arizona St and Stanford this year.

I think some of this shows the media power of Syracuse.

Yeah, Syracuse and the surrounding area is very reasonable for house PURCHASE values, but insanely exorbitant taxes.

My 2700 sf colonial in Putnam county (just north of Westchester, which has insanely expensive property values AND taxes) sold for more than either DOCTOR Gross' or FHCSMFS's houses did (and those places look like mansions compared to ours) -

Yeah, your comment on Doeren is right on point.
From 3-9 in 2013 to 6-1 right now in the ACC, bowl-bound for the 4th straight year.
That guy is a prime candidate for wearing a new t-shirt on the sidelines next year.

This whole conversation is insane. Dino hasn't been on campus for 18 months and he's 8-11 to date. Best case scenario is 500 after two years.

The team is obviously on an upward trajectory, but is any team (let alone a UCLA or Tennessee) going to hire a coach that might not even go to a bowl game in two seasons? There is a good chance we don't win 2 more this year. The Clemson game is an all-time achievement, but that doesn't erase the MTSU loss.

And why would Dino leave when he can be pretty much guaranteed a job at SU with a bowl every few years and average 6 or 7 wins a year? He's better off staying put, competing with the best rather than risk being canned at an SEC and being relegated to the MAC after not winning enough for the boosters. If he keeps this up here he is basically guaranteed to make at least 20 million by the time he retires at 65.
