Please, tell me why the NCAA isn’t trying to resolve this whole paying players thing in a way that actually benefits both The Game itself and Education?
If there will be both independent ‘NIL‘ payments and schools paying payers…
• The amounts paid will increase
• Competition will be down to finances, which I can’t understand as being palatable to anyone except 1-2 year players, who will then have zero allegiance or lasting affiliations to schools
• Schools will recoup their payments in ways that pass that expense down to consumers/fans
So, sure, this all ‘democratizes’ wins in a way, because the ‘blue bloods’ and cheaters used to have advantages. But, how does this affect fans of the college game? Who wants to watch mercenaries play at a lower level than the NBA? These kids no longer represent the schools to me—there’s just too much separation between an 18-year old making $500k+a scholarship vs the actual student body. Shadur Sanders had a Bentley on campus. If that’s what college sports is going to be like, how does the ncaa retain fan bases?
Since it seems impossible to put toothpaste back in the tube, players will always be paid going forward. I think there needs to be a cap somehow. Per team. A program can decide how to spread it around, but it’s uglying the sport to have billionaires, corporations, larger enrollment pools, etc. determining wins and losses.
