Wildhack is on the Clock

I'm holding out hope that the Texas game shows us something we aren't expecting.

When Red just kept adding bodies this summer it was pretty clear hes just guessing and there would be no cohesion.

I think we have rebounding and 3 point shooting. PF and C likely much better than what we put out next couple seasons. Get average play from the guards and this team could be 21-22 wins. ACC isn't great. I know positive posts aren't welcome but I'd rather have absolute stinkers early and survive them.

I’m not going to overreact after only two games, but in this new age of the portal it doesn’t take 4 years to build a roster. Everyone on this current roster was brought in by Red.

Red needs to identify a system of basketball that works in the new world of college basketball. I hope he can do it, but I don’t think it’s a given to assume he’ll get a minimum of 4 years.
How many years did Dino get?

Bollocks. In 2024, it takes closer to 4 weeks than 4 years to get "your guys" into the programs.
You talk like we have an unlimited checking account. We have a Christmas fund and a change purse, relative to the big guys.
In our peer group, we are a small market team.
If you want to throw in a million a year to help, that’s a start.

Regarding the well we still won posts.

The Average P4 team has won these level of games at margin of 26 points per game so far this year.

Being 46 points below the average P4 team in the first 2 games will hurt our NET by somewhere between 8 to 13 spots by season end.

Is it stupid that these level of games impact NET so much … certainly can be argued that way. But the system is the system.

It is true that if we somehow get back to the bubble it becomes more an analysis of quality wins and losses, than your individual NEt. But a 6 or 7 in front of your NET can certainly lead to biases in analysis of wins and losses.

Then again I’m not sure how this team will get to the bubble team level .. but can’t give up.
Only took two games for people to start parroting misinformation about how NET works, impressive!

They use NET to rank your wins, not your team. Not sure how people still aren't grasping this.

I'm not sure if you are pointing the finger at me in terms of spreading misinformation or not understanding the process. Perhaps I am misreading your post.

Because there is no misinformation in the post above and I think I understand the process pretty well. I have said many times the selection is ultimately an analysis of your quality wins and and bad losses (this is the 3rd time in this thread alone) and your standalone NET is a very minimal factor, if at all, in the selection process. However, if its in the 70's it can create biases optically against you - and games like the first two are the ones that really sink your NET even if you have decent wins and losses..

Here's the thing. Autry had an entire off season to get a legit PG to portal over but failed miserably. And now we find ourself clueless with no identity offensively or defensively. Furthermore, this team has no fire. Very painful to watch them half ass it up and down the court.

Babers mixed in a few really good years amongst all the mediocrity.

It's the bane of athletic directors everywhere trying to figure out if the glimmers of hope are real or mirage. Wildhack has done a great job so far, hopefully he nailed it with both major revenue sports. The jury is still out on both coaches.

Besides 2018 what years were you considered really good?

Maybe plural "good years" was overstating things.

Overall, lots of mediocrity with moments where it looked like the corner might be turned.

It's not from a lack of trying to get a better/legit pg than Carlos. We aren't a desirable place for a top notch portal point guard. Roach went from Duke to Baylor, if we reached out to him, he and other top flight portal guards would not have been interested. Autry has proven himself to be a good recruiter, the hard part is now coaching and getting the team to gel. It might take time for this team to put it together but we must be patient. We might not be able to make a fair assessment this year if Carlos proves not to be an ACC caliber pg and Westry can't get out the gate. We will see.

Maybe we will have to wait till next year when Fennell comes in as a quality pg to either start or backup Westry. But, in the meantime effort and hustle on defense is something we should see right away.

I think Westry will be the answer!!!

Red brought in Donnie and this year he is landing a great class. Choppa is a very good player and i think that Petar is going to get better and be a strong bench guy later this year and next. We still need to land a big and a point for next year. How many years does Chance have left?

Love the optimism on this board, it’s fun coming here. After 2 games ( Yes I’m aware that we were not impressive) we’ve thrown everybody associated with the basketball team under the bus, including the concession workers and the custodians.

Shoats on Siena is way better than anyone we have at the guard position. GMAC knew what he was doing, let's just leave it at that

I dont think anything will happen to Red after this year for 2 reasons, 1, this is really his first year of his team his guys. He flipped the roster after year 1 and not prior to his first year. Should he have turned the roster over when he inherited JBs Best recruiting class ever? Probably. Did he miss evaluate that class and roster going into last year? Maybe.
2nd, if he has a legit good recruiting class which it is trending that way, I think you give him that 3rd year and see how Year 3 goes. I imagine Year 3 will be important in determining whether there is an announced extension or not.

I am curious how many years his contract is? Ive heard 5 but would be shocked that JW would commit to 5. I was thinking more along 3 years. One noted poster said he needs 4 years which alot of the board disagreed with for obvious reasons in today's landscape.

How much cash do you think Lemoyne and Colgate have. I would imagine that they are doing more with far less.
I went to the FGCU vs St Bonaventure game last night. St Bonaventure most likely would beat us.
We have coaches who looked detached during games and players who don't improve. Red brought in multiple players with injury histories and players who haven't lived up to their hype. This is more than a money problem.

It seems to be an evaluation and development problem

Gmac has been mediocre to terrible at talent evaluation and recruiting at Syracuse. (But good at developing and coaching players.) Not sure what changed at Siena, but Shoats (a freshman!) is a player.

I think 4 years is enough time to assess a college basket coach with teams that he personally built. For Red, this is year one as he inherited a team last year of misfits and broken parts. The only good reason to pull the plug early is if the wins are far and in between, the coaching and player development is noticeably bad, and a clear lack of being lead young men is obvious (Kenny Payne at Louisville 22-23 and 23-24).
