Wildhack Presser 10 AM Monday

No because it would be the new HC’s job to evaluate the existing assistants and decide if any should stay. Cart then horse.
And how would you know if that has already happened?

Announcing two coaches being retained sounds a lot more like a new coach than not. It would be wise to get all your ducks in a row before any annoucement. Just seems very strange the way this is proceeding to me.

I really don’t think so, other schools have a lot more success.
Because other schools have had a lot more success! I’m not steering my kid with tier 1 options to anything “less than” for the sake of Syracuse’s brand. There are scenarios where cuse might be the best fit but not just because I went there and it worked for me.

We haven't discussed that Wildhack mentioned that they have someone in mind for OC that has experience developing QB's and are ready to act quickly...

We really should extend Dino. It is not fair to him or the program to leave him hanging. He needs to be able to tell this year's recruits that he will be there all 4 years. He needs to be able to tell next year's recruits that he will be their HC. He needs to be able to offer some stability to the coaches he tries to hire.

We should extend his contract through 2026. But it only goes into effect should he get 12+ Ws combined in 2022 and 2023. So if he goes 5-7 and 6-6 it doesn't activate. At that point we either move on or renegotiate. If he goes 5-7 and 7-5 it activates the extension. We probably would still need to add more years at that point. If he goes 4-8 or worse next season you move on without adding anything to the buyout.

Extending to 2026 allows Dino to tell recruits his contract runs through their time at Cuse. It will help a lot. It also allows us to go and get the best OC we can find. Unless 2022 is a disaster, they will have 2 years to get results. And they can sign a 2 year contract as OC. Putting all of our eggs into the 2022 basket will make it harder to get an OC and it will limit you to hiring the best OC for 2022 and not necessarily the best OC.

We are doing Dino, the players, the program, and the fans wrong by not committing to 2 years.

Well for one thing, Wildhack said Dino is back next year, for another, the AD let’s the head coach pick his assistants.

Since I want him gone today, the idea of extending him for any reason is nuts, he has totally failed and has had plenty of time for a fair shot. Giving him more time will only delay the change that must be made, if for no other reason than his age, assuming he gets improvement in the next four years, which is a real stretch of my credulity, he is approaching retirement anyway by then. No make a change ASAP, no extensions.

do we know what his contract is. If it's to 2030 what are we extending? I honestly haven't gotten a straight answer. Wildhack wouldn't answer it today either.

I wouldn't extend anything publicly. if a player commits to Syracuse at this point, after the last season, they are committing in large part to the university as much as Dino. Not sure an extension will matter if we win 3 games next year.

Just get the business done and the business will get done.

2024.

Does not change that this is kind of a strange scenario, unless you have decided to let Dino have his one more year on his contract{money}, but know 90 percent you are going to replace him with one of those retained coachs next year.

Disagree. This is one of the few areas where we should have a recruiting advantage, yet we usually don’t get serious consideration. Likely part of it is that the Athletic Department has not put the effort into developing a culture where athletic alums are enthused to send their kids to SU. Btw I think it’s discouraging for you to suggest that most kids who get a “tier 1” offer should presumptively write off SU.

I still don't understand why an extension would matter. Recruits, and their parents, aren't dumb. Neither are potential new staff. They know (or sure as hell will be told by other coaches) that Dino is on thin ice at SU and needs to win in 2022. An extension means nothing given what JW said this morning, everyone can read the tea leaves that another disappointing year will mean Dino is gone.

We can't trick people into thinking the program is more stable than it is. Because it ain't.

We need to make the appearance of a commitment to Dino past one season. An extension achieves that. Otherwise fire him. It does the program no good having the coaches, players, recruits, and fans think Dino is a lame duck. What is the draw back to extending him to 2026? If he goes an uncompetitive 5-7 or worse next year you fire him and only owe 2023 and 2024 which is the case anyway. If he goes a competitive 5-7 or better then he comes back with a 2 year contract that has the 2 year option should he get a Bowl in 2023.

Then he should be fired. Giving the appearance that you are committed to Dino past 1 year means he isn't a lame duck. Why would a recruit commit to a lame duck? Why would a decent OC come here? Why hald azz it? Either fire him or say we are committed.

There’s a whole lot that’s discouraging, no?

My experience in school has zero to do with what’s best for my kid (athlete or not). There are scenarios where it may be best or at least equal relative to other options. Playing time. Less internal competition. System, etc. In most situations, though, we’re not gonna win the head to head comparisons with top teams (and most peer teams these days). That’s the reality that needs to change. It starts with a coach who can do more with less for a bit and build momentum. We all know what it *can* be but we’re not close to that.

We're not committed. Dino has next year to get it together. It was his decision to fire most of his staff, presumably. So replacing them is on him. Our recruiting class already stinks, and its not like most true frosh are gonna help much next year anyway. It's a lost year on that front.

Seems like we punted the decision to this time next year, and told Dino to win or else. Throwing fake years at him won't do anything, IMHO.

You can argue he should be fired. I think Wildhack is buying time and trying to see if the right lieutenants will work w Dino vs firing everyone and praying the next guy has the respect on campus that Dino has.

It's a 230 yard 3 wood from the first cut of rough with water in front. JW is trying to make eagle here and it won't be easy. But I kinda respect him for doing it his way. the payoff could be big if he converts here

SU is never going to release any contract details because they don't have to. They certainly aren't going to come up with a new contract to add to the one they wish they didn't have. If they come out and say that they are extending Dino, the only appearance that is going to give is that they are stupid.

Having him come back next season as a lame duck is stupid.
