Wildhack Tidbits

I have a question that may have been asked already. Since SU wants to bring the bell back could they do something like play a bell sound (ACDC hells bells) to the actual bell ringing? Would make it louder. Just a thought. Personally I like the train whistle.
I was thinking the same thing.

Wheel the bell out for effect and play a bell sound over the speakers.

Also, problem with the bell is the time it takes to ring the damn thing. We scored 50 pts and the bell was ringing for 5-6 damn minutes.

My buddies were livid that the entrance video didn't somehow incorporate that speech into it. I thought the entrance video was pretty lame actually. Didn't get me pumped up and then after it was over, everyone stood around for 3 minutes with some random music playing until the team just ran out. The game day production continues to be a completely disjointed experience.
There was an entrance video?

No that makes sense. I thought some of that was hanging already but apparently not. It's not rocket science but maybe there are additional structural complications with this damn dome. Not sure why the sound keeps getting worse and worse but it's a problem.
Wait a minute, when was the current sound system installed?

So correct me if I am wrong, since the current sound system was installed there hasn't been any innovation in audio that can make speakers smaller, lighter and have better sound since then? Just sounds like BS to me.

I love traditions, but I don't get shelving the train whistle for a bell. I think most people got that the whistle was honoring the Elmira Express. Maybe it was a little derivative, but for a school who's fans have ignored almost every last shred of tradition it had, it was at least something. Bells are kinda lame, honestly.

Ultimately it really doesn't matter. SU fans deserve the minor league experience, honestly. The day they actually participate in a traditional chant or cheer aside from "let's go orange" will be the first time in decades.

Agree with your first paragraph but your off base on the second. For the last 20 years the only chant or cheers during timeouts has been an ad for Jack Mcernie Chevrolet, Tullys, Coke and Turning Stone Casino. When they actually do a cheer its usually 10 minutes into the 3rd quarter with SU down 25 and a quarter of the fans left running to the nearest beer stand praying its still open.

You guys are kinda harsh considering season tickets start at $120. You're judging it as if you paid a 5 figure PSL.

The Bell is to little to late at this point. I understand what the school is trying to do but its 2017 not 1987. 90% of the fans have no idea why the hell its there and it sounds like a 1st grader playing the triangle at his 1st music class and thats if u can hear it at all. Just play some music, show the replay and blow the train whistle if u want.

When was the last roof replacement? 1999?
So there isn't a way to improve the sound system with all the audio innovation from 1999 until now?

Smaller, lighter, better speakers and other equipment. Someone call Bose FFS.

It might be tough to get to the speakers until the next time the roof is deflated.

They can deflate the roof anytime, Sala does it when a big winter storm is coming. It could be done to add new equipment, I know it is pretty rare but wouldn't putting in new equipment be pretty important.

My solution: blow the horn, then ring the bell 3 or 7 times after each score

More band to me is the most important part of this.

To the band folk, does the school actually recruit unique instruments when applicants mention being in a marching band or playing tubas, etc? Reason I ask is because my son actually plays the euphonium and I wonder if this is something that a band director would look for when he goes to college.

The band is looking for someone to play the spoons

The dome is an incredibly difficult venue for audio. Lots of vast reflective surfaces (mostly the roof) that create frequency zones that will make the sound ok in one location and awful thirty feet from that. There is certainly new speaker and amplifier technology that might help, but this would be a seven figures project to do it right.

If it truly sounds worse than last year, it could be that some enterprising SU employee has entered new settings into the control system (say to make an adjustment to try to improve the sound for a graduation ceremony) and inadvertently messed up the settings for the full dome audio. It's a complicated system with dozens of speakers and amplifiers and a processor that controls the levels, frequencies, etc. of each of each individual unit. Small changes made by an operator can have large repercussions.

Getting a professional audio company to come in and take laser readings of the room and reset the system to "tune the room" could solve many of the problems.

Or it could be broke .... One or the other.

Perfect. Special. Glad you said this cause I felt like every time they rang the cow bell felt like I needed to stop drinking my beer and go get a cup of hot tea & cookies...

I'm ok if Pete Sala (this is on Sala not Wildhack) & the SU admin want to try new things but if it makes it a worse experience hope Sala isn't too stubborn of an old man to admit he was wrong and subsequently fixes it. Will be interesting to see what happens.

It doesn't matter. They've put the words to the fight song on the video board for years and years. No one sings. They've tried countless times to do various chants and, aside from the students, no one participates. It's a lost cause. SU fans hate a college atmosphere and make zero effort to create one.

My last point is crucial. Other school's fan bases don't whine about the administration creating or maintaining traditions. They do it themselves. That's the whole freakin' point. But SU fans don't care.

It is what it is.

Syracuse isn't a college town.

It's a town with a college.

That's perfect. Reminds me of something a friend of mine once said... Syracuse has lots of history, but very little tradition.

What's sad is that the pro teams I follow have more in game tradition. Love it or hate it, think it's hokey or cool, but they all have several thsings that are done with crowd participation year after year.

Red Sox fans sing Shipping off to Boston, Sweet Caroline and Dirty Water... Pats fans sing Crazy Train and Your Love... Celtics fans dance to Geno... and there are many many more examples.

I really wish SU fans enjoyed what makes college athletics special. They don't.

Well I think there are a LOT of SU fans here. Many have said they would like the Train Whistle back because it was really cool. Much, much, much better than a bell being rang by some old dudes.

I remember getting the acceptance letter to SU, sang Amen while my dad punched himself in the face. First hoops game, Amen was gonzo.

The kids seem to do fun various fun stuff at hoop games. Fans "travel" (reality is they live in the markets we play in) for hoop, chant, make noise, etc. Difference being hoops usually wins or the expectation is there.

Teams win, places fill up, stuff happens. The Jose Jose Jose thing for the Mets worked better in 06 when they were good, now it's 3 drunk dudes from Woodhaven doing it, not the same.

The SU fans who post here might fill one section.
