2016 Top 25 G Tyus Battle Commits to Syracuse

Right, I also should have mentioned there's always the chance we run off Chino.

I try and follow the recruiting, but certainly not as much as some others here. This seems like a pretty huge get for us; is there any thought that Battle could play the 1? I'm not sure KJ or Howard will ever be an elite level PG, plus the idea of putting 2 guys with that size at the top of the zone is pretty intruiging to me.

But I'm thinking we're probably done for the class of 2016 now?
I think Chino (class of '13) might be gone by the 1016-17 season. Due to an NCAA ruling, he lost a year of eligibility. So he came in (2013-14) as a sophomore. 2014-15 (this past year) was his junior year. And the upcoming season (2015-16) he'll be a senior. Therefore, he could be gone (by my count) when Battle comes in.

By Edit: Sorry for the confusion, but I need to revise the above to get the 2016 count correct. After re-reading that DO article ... I think Chino will be a RS senior 2016-17. The reason is .. he red-shirted his first year, which would normally have given him 5 years. Instead, because of the NCAA ruling, he got 4 (RS plus 3 playing). If that's true, he's would have been a RS 2013-14, a RS sophomore this past season 2014-15, a RS junior for the upcoming season 2015-16 and a RS senior in 2016-17 (Battle's year). This is confirmed by his listing as a sophomore on the 2014-15 roster on SU's website, and a junior (for 2015-16) on Verbal Commits. http://verbalcommits.com/schools/syracuse

That makes the 2016 class 11 (suggesting the staff has heard something about the appeal or is planning on another player not being around):

KJ, Howard
Battle, MR
Moyer
Roberson, Lydon, Diagne
DC2, Obokoh (RS Senior)
Chukwu

Not really... he is a 5 star in the same way that MCW and Waiters were 5 stars.

they dropped over the course of a few years. Battle was #9 - and now he is 20-27. there certainly are not 20 1 and done players per year.

The rare excpetion was that Christmas stayed 4 yrs as opposed to leaving after 2 or 3 years.
In fairness, the biggest reason that Battle has dropped from the top 10 to the 25 range is the fact that he was injured last year and has barely been on the court since last summer. Dudes always drop like rocks when that happens.

and MCW and Waiters dropped because they committed to Syracuse. All 3 of the droppings were pointless.

and iirc rakeem had dropped to a 4 star in a few different services as well.

i think the moral of this story is that the services knew battle would end up at cuse 1 way or another so they pre-preemptively dropped him.

I think both (DW/MCW) were 4-stars.

Well, MCW definitely didn't drop after committing to SU. We were the first big school to really even know about him. He was a no name recruit when we landed him, and absolutely blew up to become a McDonald's kid. Carmelo rose in the rankings after committing to SU as well. He was in the 15-25 range, if I remember correctly, and then after the famous LeBron game he started soaring all the way up to #2 nationally.

Cool title to your piece on Battle, J-kel.

MCW and Waiters didn't stick around long. I am not sure if Battle is a Group 1 prospect or not. You say no. Here is an interesting analysis of the odds; depends where you classify him.

Pathetic. A cheating coach and a sorry university. Well done Tyus. Good luck playing for the Klansmen.

The "cheating coach" comment is expected and I can brush that off, but "Klansmen?" What?
Michigan basketball had a far worse scandal that Syracuse could ever dream of being involved in. Maybe the second worse of all time, behind UNC's.

Yah, de-commitments are not fun. But "Bradley" needs to re-read UM basketball history and relax. Fortunately, Battle's parents took the high road and the recruit himself made a classy statement about UM.

The irony of them calling us cheaters is that their 1992 and 1993 Final Four banners are currently rolled up in a storage room somewhere.

Yes, and also ironic is that it shows the marginal impact a NCAA punishment brings. The legend of their Fab 5 hasn't been erased from any minds at all, and they continue to benefit from the on court success of those teams as a result of their enduring popularity. Public opinion is clearly on the side of the players when they are scrutinized by the behemoth that is the stuffed shirted legions of the NCAA.

I am confident we'll get scholarships back. I foresee 1 scholly per year and a year reduction in the penalty. 2 for 3 years. It'll take some time, but in Kent we trust.

Not sure what's going to happen with the JB suspension. That could end up an ugly affair. No way his vacated wins hold up when everything was given back to Paterno and PSU.

I think the SU has the option to delay the scholarship reduction by one year. Hopefully the appeal will reduce the reduction to just 1 scholarship.

This is a big day. When you Google "Battle Syracuse", no longer will the battle between the Athenians and the Sicilians in 415 BC be the first result.

I know this was kind of a joke post but that's really interesting to think about. Instead of being removed from the history books, things will move to the 2nd page of Google.

Mamba AND Paschal!? tremendous news finally! All the pieces are lining up for 16-17 imo. Paschal, Mamba, Malachi, the 2 Tylers w KJ, Diagne and Howard? i dont see too many weaknesses!

Absolutely love this commitment. Could not care any less out scholarship counts etc. Just doesn't interest me. Battle will play the PG spot. Will he be MCW or more like Silent G? It does concern me a little because his #27 ranking is based on him playing the 2 or 3, not sure what his rating would be if looked at as a 1?? Fortunately we will likely have KJ and Howard back there with him so that should help with the ball handling if need be.

...but most likely scratch Diagne off that list.
