2016 Yankees

'If the YANKEES don't play me, I'm going to hold out for more $$.'

crickets...then confused applause.

'Or retire'

Thundering Ovation.

'Yes, that's it. I retire.'

Personal services contract for next year? I doubt he leaves that much money on the table.

He still gets paid if he gets released.

He'll be enjoying a lot of Miami Beach sunrises next year.

He's got $20+ million reasons not to retire. ;)
Exactly. That's why I'm thinking there's some sort of personal services thing worked out. Otherwise it would seem pretty awkward for him to go first in the press conference announcing that he's been cut. If they were just outright DFAing him, it would be a strange arrangement tomorrow.

Could really be anything honestly. Buyout at the end of the year, buyout right now. The only thing this all but confirms is that he won’t be on the 2017 roster

Maybe a 24 day 'unpaid leave of absence' and a 23.5MM' services contract going forward??

Gets him off the roster for now but back in sept to go for 700.

Don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out Alex. There are few athletes I have less respect for, if there are any.

If he doesn't sign with another team, which he is free to do after Friday, I hope he ends up on the YES broadcast, or better yet, he replaces Suzyn Waldman on the radio. ;)

By all accounts the guy works hard, is obsessed with baseball, is a good teammate, and always says the right things. In an era full of cheaters, he was one of the few players unfortunate enough to get caught.

Are you sure the players you respect were clean?

The thing that always bothered me is that the results that got him were supposed to be confidential.

No I'm not sure. I guess you can't be totally positive with anyone from that era. I just can't stand him for the fact that he didn't learn his lesson after admitting he took them with the Rangers. If you like him, that's fine. We won't change each other's opinion. With that being said, I'm not a Yankees fan. I'm a Braves fan, yes even in the down times like this year. So I'll leave this thread for those of you who are Yankees fans.

Wasn't Andruw Jones (along with everyone's favorite Big Papi) amongst others on that "confidential" list as well?

Rosters expand on September 1. So to free up one roster spot for 19 days they embarrass A-Rod. Why not just put him on the DL until then and let him finish the season, get at bats in Sept and maybe get that 700th HR? Then buy out his last year when the season is over. I just can't see this given the team isn't a serious playoff contender this year. I haven't really liked him particularly, but I felt bad for him and the way he's being treated.

I think it will workout well for him. He gets the ceremonious farewell on Friday and can sign with a new team on Saturday.

He was caught multiple times and was more brazen than the typical MLB cheater, going out of his way to besmirch the Yankee organization and the commissioner's office. His apparent contrition of late, even if genuine, doesn't erase his past.

I would say the Yankee organization and MLB went out of their way to besmirch A-Rod.

To be clear, I don't think the past should be erased.

I'm certainly no fan of the steroid era and how it was seemingly enabled by MLB officials and ownership. Still, I find it hard to forget the grandstanding A-Rod did on Mike Francesa's show, wherein he basically spouted a string of lies and then stormed out of the studio.

Ortiz is a big teddy bear so nobody cares.
A lot of people conveniently forget about him being on the list.
That's because he's on the Dead Sux, the team of the true aesthetes of American League baseball. The only other way he gets a pass is to be on the Cubs, the team of the true aesthetes of National League baseball. I've been to Dead Sux games at Oriole Park and Cubs games at Nationals Park, and their fans act, look, and dress alike, all the while worshiping the triumph of style over substance.
