I don't think we are saying anything here the coaching staff isn't well aware of. I HAVE to believe there is a game plan here. They are all experienced and smart enough to know that coaching and development will only take you so far. You need to have talent, self-will, and grit to succeed at this position...these are near impossible to coach into someone. I think (based on no actual factual evidence) that at some point we will be pleasantly surprised by a transfer than can contribute right away (Not Richiusa). Hopefully they are working on someone behind closed doors.
Either that or next season is gonna be very rough.
Interesting note...during March time at Princeton, they had no true face off guy, Currier took almost every draw. In Petros last few seasons at Hop they struggled at the X...maybe the staff doesnt truly believe in the positional need? Crazy but worth noting.
Also. I saw Sisselberger in Lake Placid. People were asking him about a return to college lacrosse. Not happening.
As much as it pains me to say it I wouldn't bet my fortune or life that there is a game plan at FOGO beyond the obvious. Gait and Petro are not dumb and Petro has a track record of prior success at Hop but last year showed that they are far from infallible. They didn't appear to be a plan in place to address the close D problems, goalie issue and the continued issues with substitutions and off sides penalties including I believe 5 versus Albany well into the later part of the schedule. Now again I am not saying the face off unit will be as bad as goalie was last year but right now the only option that appears remotely viable is rolling exclusively with Richiusa which while not a bad thing would mean him taking 95% of the draws like Phaup which is a recipe for an injury or breakdown.
The staff has two FOGO's coming in next year and I have heard they are really high on Mullen. However, that isn't going to do us much good this spring. Maybe Gibbs and Richiusa form a nice 1-2 Combo that can get us around 50% or above but it's hard not to look at the current situation and feel that Richiusa is likely the only incoming addition beyond Gibbs. Maybe we will get lucky and someone will jump in the portal during the fall and we have a situation similar to the UVA goalie last year but that seems more like wishful thinking at this point.
In regards to Petro, he usually had a pretty good FOGO in his time at Hop. If I recall correctly his main guy the last few years struggled big time with injuries which played a role in their struggles.
