ACC, PAC-12, and BIG alliance / conference realignment

Probably not very often. Our games in the past sunk prior alliances.
Well 8 or 9 ACC games plus 2 additional strategically placed games with PAC12 and B1G (prioritizing TV audiences and $$$) are worth more than 8 ACC games plus .6 ND games so it’s my guess that ND will not have leverage here it had previously

Also Stanford and USC will need to do whatever is in best interest of the PAC12 (which will be prioritizing the alliance, not prioritizing ND games) because if PAC12 goes any farther into the hole, Stanford and USC football will have bigger problems than keeping their precious annual ND game

USC fanbase hates the PAC-12.
If their Olympic sports didn’t get killed I bet they would leave.

The ACC is stupid if they let Notre Dame football be considered an ACC opponent.

USC will chose our games over the alliance games. But you can believe what you want. :)

The bye thing is crap. 8 is the number. not 6...11..or 12. 8.
the bye thing is legit.

it was done in the NFL for 2 teams for 50 years or so and they still give 1 bye.

it makes sense for college to go to 6.

hell, my sons football league just implented a 2 team bye. Its an 8 team league so once the 7 games are played...7 plays 8 again and 3-6 & 4-5...with 1 & 2 on bye.

i think its perfect, even if we finish 7 or 8.

we wont, the Coach is too good...

Or your son is the QB changing plays in the huddle! ;)

I don’t disagree with that which is why forever ago I was saying these 3 conferences needed to find common ground to combat the SEC. But to all say they want to increase the playoffs to 12 teams, that’s exactly what the SEC wants. And what is to prevent the SEC from attempting to poach good schools from any of these conferences. I realize that’s a much tougher ask with each conference in different GOR’s and Tv contracts but right now this alliance has no power. It can’t prevent being poached and it doesn’t do anything to stop the SEC from getting more than any other conference in to the playoffs
They didn't say they were in favor of increasing to 12 teams. All 3 Commissioners were non-committal on whether they would vote for expansion at this time.

SO they are all pro-playoff expansion.

Very good...
Yes, of course. But the sticking point will be is it limited to 2 from the P4, 1 from the G5 and the independents fight it out with the remaining at large teams.

That would be less than good news for the Irish

Those 3 want expansion.
They don’t want ESPN to have a monopoly over college football playoffs.
They want other companies involved.
The fact the ACC was willingly to stand up to its TV partner is impressive.

ESPN losing the CFB would huge.

I got that wrong then if true. I saw tweets from a reporter from each conference after the presentation and they all indicated they had no issues with expanding to 12 other than some minor issues that could be solved.

So they are going to play a best of 11 series with themselves every year or
No, but if they had to chose a alliance game or scrubbing our game that is an easy decision. The Pac 12 will not want to upset USC, and that would upset them.

What are the options for USC? Become an independent? Join the SEC?

The conferences will make it the game a priority because it's good content that generates TV $. Not because anyone is scared of ND or USC.

The thing that cracks me up the most about ND's perceived place in the world (we're king of the Independents!) is that for all that freedom, they really exist in their current state at the mercy of these three main alliance conferences. The have some power from eyeballs, tradition, and religion - but it's not greater than the three conferences combined or CFB as a whole. If they want to force you into a conference, they could.

Believe what you want. Our game will carry-on. Our place in the world is secure for now and this cute alliance does nothing. Just a bunch of platitudes which mean nothing.

USC isn't about to offend 39 schools for 1, even if it's Notre Dame. They want the opportunity to play Clemson, Ohio St, Miami, Michigan, Florida St, Penn St, and others.

ESPN isn’t going to breach the contract.
They are going to show the highest rated games they had and how few of them were ACC exclusive conference games.
The ACC has no leverage. They are locked into the contract.
All ESPN has to do is show is the contract isn’t unconscionable and boom.
They aren’t going to from paying 300 million a year to 400 million a year just because.
The ACC has little leverage. If ESPN is using its muscle for the network, and promoting the ACC brand they can’t make the conference worth more than it is.
You are out over your skis

Write this down for when the first team bounces to the SEC. Hope some lawyers and advisors are getting some good coin for this dog and pony show.
If Phillips is really this naïve then we have a problem in the ACC.
This alliance thingy sounds nice but it reminds me of the "joint declarations" that one might see from the UN where each side pledges to do X,Y,Z, and there's absolutely no repercussions, fall-back, or consequence should one side break the "agreement". And that's when wars get started.
If the SEC approached FSU or Clemson or USC or Oregon tomorrow, I'll lay odds that none of them will say; "Not so fast my friend. We are part of the alliance and cannot entertain your $100 million offer to join. Not now, not ever"! Yeah...right.

Just watch. We will be carved out and it will be counted as a game in the alliance.

Carved out, like a plantar wart?
If you must, fine. But there has already been reporters stating our yearly game with SC will count as a portion of the alliance. Stanford? Please rotate them off.

This was put together in less than a month. Im positive that behind the scenes there are some serious negotiations going down. I would expect something more formal within a year at most. Its a first step and there is a ton of work to be done. The first step stopped the bleeding. The next step will cause some.
