Splitting D1 into a new “power” tier is easy… require financial commitments from schools. Think of it like an annual budgetary floor. Some mix of player compensation, facilities maintenance/improvement, marketing, scholarship costs, etc.

Essentially, let schools buy in. Why exclude, East Carolina, if they’re willing to spend the same as Purdue or Oregon?

Yep, but there’s a big difference in financial commitment between 16 varsity sports at Ohio State and 16 varsity sports at Louisiana Tech.

High level college sports is entirely about money. We should drop the facade and just organize schools based on that.

I would only add a requirement that the AD must balance its budget showing 7 of 10 years in the black or neutral using GAAP and the NCAA ( or whatever governing body) resolving all accounting differences. Also, the governing body gets teeth, really big and really sharp teeth, to include death penalties.

Honestly, my real preference is for football to separate from the NCAA entirely to become its own, singular, NFL-style entity. Then give schools a window to reorganize into geographically-logical, numerically-feasible conferences that have some form of caps on them in terms of distance between schools and max amount of schools.

Honestly, my real preference is for football to separate from the NCAA entirely to become its own, singular, NFL-style entity. It is waht is best for college athletics which is why it will never happen. FB its own thing and then conferences capped at 10 for all other sports.

What is strange is that the flex week is considered non-conference. So they could have both teams who have qualified for their champ game lose the week prior to teams who, theoretically, would qualify for the champ game with that win.

I missed that point. Which makes it even crazier.

Why not just have the last week count and be perm rivals (I would put Utah and Texas together since they are lessor programs right now).

So if San Diego State and Fresno State are 1/2 in the conference, they will have those 2 play the two worst teams instead to preserve records?

Take the 4 teams with 3H/4A games... and rank. Take the 4 teams with 4H/3A and rank. And then let the teams with the best records in each category play... everyone gets 4H and 4A... teams get a fair matchup for that 8th game.

I thought there was more to it than that. When I was at SUNY Oswego, there was talk of them thinking about going D1 for hockey. The argument against it was that they would have to cut too many sports to divert enough money to hockey to meet the financial requirement. Of course, that was nearly 30 years ago, so a lot of the rules may have changed.

I don't recall off hand, I was just responding to the number of teams at the D1 FCS and FBS level. Naturally, there is some level of financial commitment to support the teams. I think that the conferences require certain facility levels, which is why so many teams are deep in debt (see the B1G with 13 teams having >$200M in debt).

I suspect it wasn’t an NCAA requirement, per se. If Oswego went D1 they’d need to offer athletic scholarships, which of course don’t exist at the D3 level. So that’d be a cost, along with everything else it costs to operate a D1 program.

The NCAa doesn’t allow schools to move just one sport up levels anymore. It’s all or nothing. About a quarter of D1 hockey programs were grandfathered in when that rule was implemented, and the remainder of their programs are D2 or D3. AIC was one of them and dropped back to D2 this season due to the cost of being D1.
