Adrian Cole and Luke Benson in the portal.

As previously stated, they didn't leave mid-season so.....

I wish them both the best. Benson doesn't fit the Tucker offense and AC is a grad transfer who wants to experience more in life. I don't fault either one of them. Thank you to both for finishing this Nov trainwreck and at least trying to elevate this team.

Not surprised by Benson

His family was very vocal almost every single game about their displeasure
What’s his family think about his injury and drops when he did get a chance? I’m sure our schizophrenic fan base will be up in arms over this nothing development.

Just a reminder that we started 6 portal guys vs Pitt. 6 imo is a lot. We will use the portal.
Agreed i do think we will land a few good players. Personally Im not a fan of the portal and think that there should be some limitations as to when a kid is allowed to leave and enter. I also think that teams need to be better protected in the event they have a max exodus. At this point we have lost 4 maybe 5 players that im sure Dino would like to have kept. Obviously the LB as he spent 3 hours trying to get him to stay as well as Cole, the DT, Taj, and i have to think Benson.

Over/under on Dino’s use of “underbelly” before fall camp? 100?

In my mind, he never gets to use depth as an excuse again. This is his problem and he should have forecasted it

The portal is his problem? And I don’t think we lost a single kid that could have been predicted. Maybe devito.

every team is gonna have 5-10 kids want to go someplace , they key is getting the ones that fit you and not just get ones to take up roster spots.

He’s the CEO. So it’s his problem. If he’s not predicting who will enter portal based on his style of play decisions/coaching decision, then I don’t know what to say. If he’s just waiting for guys to surprise him, then we have a bigger problem than I think

Maybe he did forecast it. Not much he can do about it for the most part.

Maybe he did and hopefully he has a plan because blaming problems on depth and lack of underbelly will not fly for me in year whatever we are in

I think he did forecast this problem. As far back as July.

Did anyone predict the following three players would be entering the portal?
  • Cantin-Arku (So)
  • Harper (RS-Jr)
  • Cole (RS-Fr)
All three played a significant amount of football this season and would likely do the same next year. Do you think any one of them entered the "portal based on his style of play decisions/coaching decision"?

For bonus points... Did anyone see Labrosse (Fr) walking away after week one?

That's four defensive players with a lot of eligibility remaining who would have accounted for a lot of snaps next year. One safety, one corner, one linebacker, and one defensive tackle.

Roster depth could be a problem next year. Who knows? Camp opens in 8 months. A lot can happen between now and then.

I'm fairly confident Dino and his staff will bust their tails to build the best roster they can build. They may not fill all 85 scholarships spots for various reasons, like leaving 1 or 2 for the late addition from the portal or saving 1 or 2 for a walk-on who is contributing (Darton, Hawkins etc...), but I am confident any open scholarships will not be due to negligence or laziness.

Hopefully they can get 6-7 legit HS kids between now and the 15th and then another 3-4 before February. That way they would only need about 7-8 transfers to fill the roster and have some depth

Otherwise ...

Everything is fine. But if things go bad next year we’ve got an excuse waiting in the wings. We’ll need to extend him so he has time to recruit his own guys.

I actually have hope they can pull it off with some of the remaining HS targets. At least 4-5 in the next couple weeks.

Probably will bring in 4-5 Transfers as well.

Either way, depth will be an issue and we will need another 25+ commits next year and 4-5 transfers in if that's allowed.

I think depth is one of the major issues for next year. If we had depth I’d be more convinced we could make a bowl game. Even if we make a great OC hire, depth has the potential to prevent us from getting to 6 at the end of the year.

Especially if they backend us with Physical teams.

Fair responses, but filling with game ready guys vs just adding with guys who won’t start begins the spin cycle of excuses on building the depth and underbelly of team is a concern He’s gotta hit on many positions of need.

Does anyone sincerely believe the coaches would just add guys who won't start rather than add game ready contributors just to have an excuse?

So far we have...
  1. He didn't forecast this problem.
  2. He didn't predict who would enter the portal based on his style of play decisions/coaching decisions.
  3. Blaming problems next year wont fly with you.
And now...

4. He's going to fill the roster with players who won't start just so he can have an excuse if things go bad.

C'mon, there's too much on the line for these coaches. These coaches are grown men with families. This is their livelihood.

We all have our opinions. You have yours and I have mine. I hope they are playing chess and not checkers as he likes to proclaim.

I’ll be happy to revisit these comments in the fall to see what transpires. As we’ve seen with prior coaches, no matter what’s ‘on the line’ or how ‘grown’ they are, some don’t have the ability. Given his body of work this year, i’m worried about Dino’s ability

And yes, for 5 years we heard depth as an excuse.

Nobody believes they’re just going to wholesale add players. But is the staff capable of identifying players who can play, we’ve recruited an insane amount of WR’s in 6 years and still have no WR’s. Is the staff capable of getting quality players that can contribute. Again, in 6 years we’ve had depth issues every year. So no, there’s nothing wrong with asking any of these questions. They aren’t just issues that popped up this year, they’ve been questions since DB got here. Starting with the QB and OL depth at the very least.

Well at least we do not play them this year. GT loading up on transfers.
