Cant be an elite program with Cooney as a starter

Sorry, now that the season is over I'm done hearing this horseshi
When Cooney went out today, guess what we did?

G with a dunk
CJ repeatingly driving into the lane.
Ennis to the hole

ALL without Cooney on the floor

This whole "Cooney opened up the lanes" line used all year was a myth. The lanes were much better when he was hitting shots no doubt. But when he was missing, he should not be on the floor.

Me saying Cooney opened up the floor was one of my many points that disagreed with the original post saying Cooney is a bench player. That is completely ridiculous. Cooney definitely needed to drive more and be more consistent with having a pull-up jumper though.

Ennis driving to the hole was on fast breaks with Cooney out, and when it wasn't, both Ennis and Cj's shots were challenged. CJ and Ennis missed those same shots in the first half. If they make those, we win. Grant had 4 points, CJ was 4-14, and Ennis missed 14 shots.

Where Cooney had the greatest effect was on fast breaks when teams had to shade towards him and that's when Ennis could get the the basket a little easier. That was much more evident the first half of the season when we got on fast breaks. And even in the half court, teams played 4 on 4 against us. When we made shots, we won. When we didn't, we lost. Cooney had a bigger effect on this team than people give him credit for. Again, add one more shooter to take the pressure off of Cooney, and we win the national championship.

I believe Cooney will be better next year. He will work his ass off on his weaknesses and be much better for it. He hit a wall and struggled at the end. I appreciate the kid and would be thrilled for him to be wearing Orange for two more years.

He was the worst "three point shooter" this team has ever had.

His performance in the last two months was bad and he should feel bad.

If Cooney played G's mins today in the 2nd half, we would've lost by 10+.

Dumb post. He barely even played today.

you are starting to sound like Dasher who has defended every loss this year.

just let fans vent their frustration. Dumb post reply comments mean nothing. Instead answer why you might disagree with them.

we all know he barely played, but why? was he hurt again?

Well, going into the year I was very high on Cooney, and early on I felt vindicated.

I just don't see it any more.

He's going to make a great third guard (which is fine, an energy guy who can hit shots, and has a decent handle) - but at the end of the day his defense is okay at best, and he offers relatively little outside of his shockingly inconsistent shooting touch. Now, I'm sure he'll become more consistent going forward, but not sure that's enough.

If you can be shut down simply by being overplayed, well, then you're a change of pace guy, not a starting shooting guard on an elite team. He's not just not able to create offense for anyone else - or himself off the bounce. He's too easy to shut down.

:(

I'm trying to see where that relates to the whole season. Obviously, in this game Gbinije was playing better than Cooney so he got the minutes. That's what happens. You go with who's playing well.

If Gbinije plays Cooney's minutes this season, we wouldn't have been 28-6.

I'm relating it to the whole season because the whole season people said, "You can't play Gbinije 10-15 mins a game because Cooney opens up the lanes". I've disagreed with it all year. I never suggested Gbinije play Cooney's mins. Cooney needed to be our shooter. He was very good in many games...but I thought Cooney had way too long of a leash all year and...is what is it, I guess

BUT we might be going deeper in this tournament even if we'd lost a couple more games early in the year.

If Cooney is starting u will be doing the same exact thing next year - can't have a guard out there with zero ability to penetrate whatsoever and can be defended by simply never leaving him - he can come off the bench but teams figured him out - he's a slow, short, 2g that simply needs a guy to stay on him - then he's totally useless and makes us even staler on offense
You'll do better if you stick to the facts. It's true we need a guard that can make shots late in the season but you're making stuff up.

Cooney = Cougar

He's held on too tight and lost the edge.

Gbinije average 14.4 minutes per game, so he was given the 15 minutes you wanted. He also averaged 3.3 points per game, and scored just 108 points all season. He hit double figures once all season. He got increased playing time down the stretch because Cooney wasn't playing well. Starting with Clemson, Gbinije played over 15 minutes in all but 2 games. He also played over 20 minutes in 6 games down the stretch including 30 against Virginia. I think Gbinije is a great player, and he will be a valuable piece to this team next year, but he was given chances and he didn't have that breakout game that he needed.

Ask yourself if he got the same chances as Cooney. Be honest about it...

I have serious doubts given what he did. You think otherwise and it baffles me. That is as honest as it gets. He may become an excellent role player off the bench next year. That I truly believe. He looked tentative and rusty most of this year. That happens with an entire year way from game competition. He should settle down by next year and be a valuable asset. Just not a starter over Cooney.

Well, he will be starting...so maybe you can just stay home and say I told you so...enjoy your summer...

I'm not sure he brings that. He seems more reputation based on "practice" than actual game shooting. However, I think he played good D most of the year and actually CAN drive the lane. For some reason once the ACC started he decided to do nothing than chuck up 3's every time. No more driving, no pump fakes, no medium jumpers, no floaters. He CHOSE to become one dimensional, but was not able to really come through on that dimension. that being said, he is only a sophomore. There is time to improve. I really wish he was not forced to be a starter, 3 years off the bench might have made for a decent senior year.
TC didnt just change his game once the ACC started he had no game against the better comp. I dont know why everyone thinks that he is such a good shooter. Shooting in practice has little to do with shooting in a real game situation and with very few exceptions he has not shot well at all. At the end of last season i said that he needed to play against top competition in the summer to improve. He did some of that but i believe what we see is what we get. Dont expect a huge jump in his game as his game is pretty much set. I would like to see him come off the bench and provide the team with a spark. Not sure who would start as he seems to be our best option. Truth be told we do not have a good 2 on the team and that has been our weakness all year

You confuse me. Are you saying he is the worst 3 point shooter on this team? If so, your statement is way off. Statistics prove your statent wrong.

If you are saying he is the worst three point shooter on all Syracuse tes, I believe you are way off on that.

I do agree he hasn't performed well since the Notre Dame game. I also agree that he probably does feel bad. In fact, he probably feels worse than we do.

I'm just curious, how long have you been following Syracise men's basketball? I only ask this because we have had some three point shooters that have worse statistics than Trevor.

I think the point was pretty obvious. As our designated three point specialist he hasn't come through in some big situations. There were a lot of games down the stretch where wide open looks were way off.

Based on what? Based on many of your posts, it seems like you may be the headcase. Sometimes you have well thought posts which make sense and are based on facts, then you write a silly, insulting post like this that is based on your rollercoaster emotions.
Knoblauch ankiel baker finch. It happens to athletes.
