Chris Bell to return

Basketball lifting is tricky as it can have a negative effect on shooting.

General rule...high(er) repetitions and less weight and all should be fine. Too much/more weight and less/small number of reps is what can create the unwanted bulk.

Great post. I'm happy Bell is coming back because, just like I said about Benny, at the very least we need competent depth. If he can contribute more than that then all the better. And if Autry wants him back, then I want him back.

Honestly, if the best case of Bell is that he's a 15-18 minute a game sharpshooter then that's not so bad. We can use one of those guys.

Sometimes we forget that many programs distribute their minutes much differently than SU has under JB. Not every team rolls four guys out for 35+ minutes a game. Under Autry there may be more minutes available to "specialists" so to speak.
Great point on minutes distribution, and I'll also add that it seems the board is trying to manifest a three guard lineup. Which is totally fine, and if we have 3 really good guards to play, why not?

But a 3 guard lineup is a LINEUP. It doesn't mean you can't have other lineups in your rotation that are a more traditional 2 guard/2 forward/1 center mix.

It's an NBA example, but Golden State didn't win by playing their small ball lineup 48 minutes. They won by having lineup versatility that could often win the matchups against their opponent's lineups. With one lineup that was particularly competitive.

The other thing is that the current terms for positions are outdated. And not used by a ton of basketball people.

Like Chris Bell could basically be called a wing, for instance. Doesn't matter if it's an off ball "2" or a "3".

What position is Giannis? What position is LeBron? These outdated boxes don't work anymore. I could see Chris Bell eventually playing everything but lead ball handler and big.

Is there any chance this kid gets to play on an international team this summer

Kinda hope not. Would rather this group be more focused on getting a head start together including the Israel trip

I've seen this narrative in here many times and my response is always the same: I've yet to see a D1 basketball player get to the level of musculature that alters a shooting stroke. And there is certainly no one on our roster who has to worry about getting that big in his 2 to 3 years here short of dedicating all of his time to it and using steroids.

They are useful for summation of skills. It would indeed be accurate to call Bell a wing. The distinction between 2 and 3 has always been hazy especially in college but you generally expect a 2 to have something of a handle and the ability to defend guards, and a 3 to have a little more size to contribute on the glass and check forwards. By that definition I see Bell as more of a 3, and because I like multiple ballhandlers who can initiate offense that's where id generally like to see him

Who said anything about unwanted bulk? Chris Bell couldn’t put on unwanted bulk if he power lifted three hours a day for three years.

With few exceptions, our teams have lacked bulk for 5 or 10 years, especially positions 3-5. That's one of our problems. We get pushed around in the paint.

I believe the post in which I responded to was suggesting this (unwanted bulk) by saying; "basketball lifting is tricky as it can have a negative effect on shooting." I may have misinterpreted his post, although, I'm all ears for what the poster may have been implying then by his "negative effect on shooting" remarks could actually potentially be due to lifting. Perhaps, either of you can enlighten me?

Chris Bell is a wing player, and his main skill set/asset is being able to shoot 3's and perimeter shots...period. As such, he can improve his rebounding numbers by utilizing more effort and will to do so, as he's never going to be a guy that should be expected to be cleaning up on the glass, etc. I'm of the firm belief that effort and will more than any other trait is number one when it comes to rebounding.

A recent quote from an NBA head coach whose team has the number one defense in the league.

"Defense/rebounding comes down to the effort you're willing to put in. The second effort, the third effort, the fourth effort that you're willing to put in. And right now, we don't have enough guys that are putting in the second, third and fourth effort."

The only players yet to confirm if they will be back are Copeland, Taylor, Edwards, Hima and Brown? I suppose yearly recommitments is now a thing. Brown and Hima seems to be a lock and perhaps do not need to make a statement, but the others are up for debate.
Hima can’t transfer again. He’s back.

And we (appear to) play very soft. I think the zone takes away aggressiveness.

We've moved a long way from the toughness of players like DC and Pearl. Let's hope that Red can bring it back.
Agree, but I also think players are motivated by being incentived playing less physical and what seems to appear soft at times. It's all about the 3. A correction is coming.
