Chris Carlson on SU & Weitsman

"The school said Weitsman’s lawyers initially asked Syracuse to endorse a $250,000 valuation for his donation. He said that valuation was determined by outside experts he hired."

He wasn't looking for $250,000, he was looking for the tax write off, from what I read. Not exactly the dastardly deed you make it out to be.
That’s how I read it, as well.

If you’ve ever tried to acquire a .com URL with a strong name, it’s expensive. The value of such a URL is something that is determined between the owner and buyer, or by an ‘arbitrator.’ While I think $250k is an optimistic assessment, for the purpose of a tax declaration, it’s not insane, and that amount wasn’t to be paid by SU. The amount of $1 countered by SU, though, is insane. “Extortion?” He had something of value, wanted to ‘optimize’ his taxes, was given an offensive counter offer by the school and just said sod it—take it for nothing.

A lot of people are ‘reading into’ article statements with their own prejudices and distorting matters…. What I found interesting was that AW seemed to provide answers for anything requested, but the other parties did not or were ‘selective.’ They’ll possibly say that was for ‘legal reasons,’ but whatever. I also liked that AW was putting money toward players I/we weren’t aware of—the women’s team, Peter Carey, Joe G, etc. The amounts may not have been high, but it also feels like we are looking at those numbers from three years ago in the prism of today’s numbers and saying it’s not a lot of money.

I find it very easy to not be offended by AW’s social media. I don’t see it. Re: the Lallys… never heard of them until this year. Appreciate any donors, but since hearing of them, I don’t get god vibes. There is a lot of petty **** going on somewhere and my most simple take is that the bigger money, quieter types had their feelings hurt when the smaller money louder types were getting all the ink.

On the contrary, I don't see how it looks bad for the school. They apparently viewed him as something of loose cannon and stood their ground. They told him that he was free to donate through a collective like most other donors, and he has chosen not to. Toss in the fact that other donors likely have made up the difference, and I doubt SU views it as a problem. Then there is the$30K payment to a player that SU didn't know about. Not sure which side that particular "accounting error" is on.

At the end of the day, AW doesn't want to donate through a collective, SU is fine with the current status of the relationship, and I can go back to not caring until the next volley from the PR machine.
I have to think, and maybe I am being naive, the story ends today. I really don't see what Lalli or Adam can say that will move the needle in a positive way for them. The story is the story.

Maybe it is just the beginning!!!!

Well... this kind of rationalized story telling is what happens one one person in a dispute gets to provide all of the details and shape the narrative. And now the other side is providing their side.
And you know there will be a response. It's like we're inching toward the truth.

Actually, I stand corrected, I don't believe there will be a response. Because, it would become hurtful and it's best it ends here.

I’m pretty sure it’s already clear that you are being naive. Although I agree that nothing positive is going to come out of this for anyone.

Man, what money and Egos can do to people. In my opinion none of these people are in the right. It’s all ego and money driven.

They should have all one goal, as they all have one common interest and that is Syracuse athletics. You think they’d be able to do that. It’s really simple. Just get along and help out the Syracuse athletic programs. Instead we have multi millionaires and chancellor having pissing matches with each other because of egos and money. It’s pretty sad. All of this realistically should be handled behind closed doors. I’m sure they tried that, sounds like Dasher tried it. But to me it’s just Ego’s at this point. I think the chancellor, AW and the Lalys all have some fault here tbh.

Oh to have the days of no social media and thread view back… as a household where the only social media accounts are this site and my wife’s Pinterest I can say it’s wonderful to be free of it even if it’s everywhere so it’s still a distraction…
