I said this back in May: "One thing about AW's appearance on ET and Devo's show that has bothered me was him saying that he was a mentor/wanted to mentor the players. I'm sorry but a billionaire donor should not be mentoring student athletes. That should a parent, coach or teacher. "

I caught some grief for that but I still stand by it.

He clearly wanted the credit, as well as the prospective future "opportunities" that a "relationship" with a program-changing recruit could provide.

But man that sentence should be studied with care after some of these "relationships" that have been playing out on the news recently. Wonder if he ever met a certain P*ff D*ddy back in the day.

General comments about the article (or as some say: back to our regularly scheduled program) --

Good article. Clearly Chris Carlson spent a lot of time reporting it. But the article is not the whole story. It really is only half of the story because of the limited amount that the University chose to comment on; mainly about the level of Adam’s donations and some NIL activity. We don’t know the full other side of the story (the SU side) and maybe we never will. Dasher made a valiant attempt to get the two sides together (Adam and the Chancellor) but he didn’t get the courtesy of even a “no” from the Chancellor, which, not to excuse it, may have been a reflection of the depth of the concern. A little over two years ago, in the Spring of 2023, right after it came out that Adam was no longer “involved” with SU athletics [which was around the same time that JB was “retired” as head coach, which may not have been a coincidence in timing], as some have mentioned in this Forum and is alluded to in the article, I heard from a reliable source that the SU leadership was deeply concerned about ANY possibility of the NCAA looking at their NIL and related activities. This was after two past problems as is discussed in Chris Carlson’s article. And it might have been that they were concerned about Adam’s activities. Hence his defensiveness of saying that he had had it all checked out. Given SU’s concern, they may have just decided they didn’t want to take ANY chance and in effect, stated or not, that they didn’t want any direct involvement by Adam in their program. (And to think that he may have bid on the naming rights of the Dome – that would never have happened.). Again, we may never know the full story until the Chancellor, or someone speaking for him, is willing to discuss it, which likely will never happen.

Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville.[2] In 1989, Weitsman worked at a Manhattan art gallery, Hirschl & Adler Folk, and opened the American Folk Art Gallery in Greenwich Village in 1991.[2][4] In 1995, Weitsman became vice president of Ben Weitsman & Son, a scrap processing company owned by his family before eventually purchasing it from his father.[2]

Perhaps part of the reason Syracuse University does not want any relationship with AW is because of what is underlined here. I believe someone at Syracuse University did a simple background check on AW as a part of doing any business with him, found this and an instant aura of mistrust was formed. I wish they will see that they are all human beings and their actions make each other and us suffer for not accomplishing what they could by collaborating for the University and its student athletes.

The very apt idiom "the juice is not worth the squeeze" applies here. The amount Weitsman gives does not come close to justifying the attempt to accommodate his nonsense.

I appreciate the point you make. You may be right. But I'd like to suggest that his activties with SU didn't appear to be a problem until NIL came to the fore and maybe the NCAA was nosying around as to whether his activities were all within the then rules, or what some thought were the then rules, and maybe the Chancellor just didn't want to take any chances after two prior investigations and penalties.

Thanks for the great information for those who might not be as familiar with AW as others.

Maybe I am wrong, but regular CNY residents vs school alumni might be more apt to think this should work, and Dasher tried hard, and as a loyal alumni, was stymied in his efforts.

My opinion, and only my opinion, understand the thought process of the school, the BOT, and a bunch of alumni donors, including the Lally's, who have supported the school's infrastructure. But, why would non-alumni want to donate to the school, if they didn't go there. We have our own schools and own causes that we support. But, we have supported the basketball program because either we like Syracuse basketball, Jim Boeheim, or both. And that's what Weitsman did. And he wanted to give more, but he had his own ideas.

If someone labeled Weitsman a content creator or an influencer, they might be right, but most people on here, have no clue what they do. I'm sure many, like me, watched Happy Gilmore2 and had no idea who those influencers were on there, but like AW, they are people who have millions of people follow them on social media and make things all about themselves.

So, AW will continue to do AW things. I think it's great everything he has done. Hopefully he continues to support LeMoyne and Siena, two programs that I also support financially. And hopefully he continues to help make things in CNY better for some others. And, down the road, when Buddy, or little GMAC, is the head coach, and CBB hasn't imploded from the road it is on, then maybe AW is welcomed into the Cuse family.

100% Agree. I'll round up this time. What he gave is the equivalent of $67 to someone making 100K. Divide that over 6 years and it's a little over $10 to him annual for him.

People can say oh it's not the same for billionaires as what people make in annual salary and "net worth" isn't how much they "really have". My bad that million dollars probably really put him out.

Haha. Yeah maybe the cliches are a bit much,

I’ll give you credit for trying, but I don’t think your attempt left the chancellor an exit strategy from a pr perspective.

He certainly can’t take a meeting with such a polarizing entity that was arranged by a “fan”. And there’s really no sense engaging a fan on a subject they aren’t willing to publicly discuss.
