Coach Search Options after Autry

Melo and GMac famously didn’t get along during the 2003 season. Boeheim had to mediate (I believe it was after the loss to Rutgers that things came to a head).

Obviously that was a million years ago when both were young, immature adults. But who knows if they’ve ever been close.
No idea about that.
I just assumed since they both bleed orange and won the national championship together (it would never have happened without both of their efforts) that they would have been close, or at least cordial.

Thats actually kind of sad if they are little more now than former teammates who stay out of each others way.

Well, I am a season ticket holder and would be willing to give Hop a chance.
Not my first option to be sure.
But if he could take over now and throw Red out the door, that would create a lot of good will for me.

Count me as another who won't renew season tickets if it's Hop

(I'm moving and wasn't renewing anyway but don't let the BoT know that)
I'm not getting pre-mad, but if it is Hop, what's the point of giving another dollar to SU? It was a good run. Wonderful memories, but it would be about as clear a move that we're waiving the white flag and surrendering ever being good again. And if we can't compete, I get it, that's the world we're in now, but I have finite time and resources.

Who does Red think should be his successor? Like I know someone asked him on the radio show in a messed up way. But it would be interesting if they ask him as an alum if he would stay inside or go outside. In a weird sort of way, I actually think Red might be more real and give a logical solution than Boeheim would and direct Syracuse outside.

Not to mention Hop with Lykes as an AD who we know mishandles funding…

Even with the most expensive roster in the ACC I don’t see Hop being top 4 in the league let alone getting anywhere near winning a title.
I agree.

I think it will be difficult for whoever is really doing the hire to reject the Hopkins plan where Syracuse doesn't spend very much of it's own money while getting crazy basketball funding to hire someone they already like.

We need to discuss how stupid this NIL obsession is. UCF has one of the worst financial situations in the country and is 20-7 in the best league in the country(Big 12).

NC State has probably double to triple their money and got boat raced last night by a team likely with a lower budget because their coach isn't as good.

The fact this is the only thing the powers at be are thinking about is scary.

Then factor in hiring what could be one of the worst ADs in the country and yeah … it’s fantasy land thinking that plays out as anything but failure.
Even with a Giant cash infusion we are never getting more than Duke or UNC.

We can beat them with good coaching and a good system though.

I do greatly appreciate the info you provide. No messenger shooting here. Just sick to my stomach reading what you have to say.
If any syracuse.com sportswriter has a conscience they would get ahead of this story and expose her NOW. A PR war is the only way to save SU from shooting itself in the mouth.

Wow.

Just catching up. What a ride!

So we have people actually caping for Hop?

The dude that bombed as HC. Has not done anything of note in the NBA. And, from what I can tell, has a selling point of "I know my resume isn't good enough and I wouldn't even get an interview in normal circumstances, but I'm a conduit to what would be a bunch of initial money even though I have never been a proven coach".

That is what we have? People are really doing this?

Here is a fun thought experiment, if Melo is the driving force behind Hop's legitimate shot at this HC and we currently have Kiyan on the team, do you think that there is a chance that Melo is the reason or had a hand in keeping Red this past year?

The NIL is being used as a boogeyman in this thread. Has Hodgon never raised money?

This is insane. We are 12 years on being no better than an 8 seed, five years straight of no tourney, we allowed JB to keep coaching after a 2nd probation (reminder, back in the day, we were considered UNLV East), screwed over Hop (who apparently no one gave a hoo about back then), then lied about having to hire Red and here we are hoping like hope that doing the same thing ends in different results.

That huge Dome that we have? Did that look good the games we had like 5K butts in seats? Because that Dome is going to be a running joke once we're back into an offense that features a 2G that shot below 50% TS% and has a PER that's in the 12s (Kiyan). Because Melo isn't spending all this money to have Kiyan be a dev player.

This is categorically insane.

But it isn't surprising. Same people that pushed JB being ok to screw over Hop, pushed the Boeheim and Friends teams, pushed that Red HAD to be the coach...

Same group, will be the same results.

My lord.

COMPLELTLY AGREE!!!

Not sure if shared in the other thread but found this survey around the AD search. I made my thoughts known about AD and the HC options. Who knows if it would make a difference but can’t hurt for everyone to jump in and put your thoughts in along with sharing with anyone in Cuse fandom.

Might be worth it’s own post to pin too for folks to see.

it wasnt a melo - gmac thing really. it was melo wanting his friend edelin to be more the pg. jb basically told him who the hell has been getting you the ball before edein could play. i'm sure there was much more jb said. but melo and gmac got along fine.

Wish there was a way to gather a petition quickly and get it to the search committee with a very scathing letter around fan support falling apart should they choose Lykes/Hop. It would need a well known influential face behind it which is the problem…
Paging the dasher...

Yeah, I thought this conflict also involved Duany [the senior], who wanted more shots over the young-uns.

Obviously, that was not a direction that would have helped the team, and JB set him straight from what I understand [and I love Duany, this was a rare dust-up involving him].
