Coach Search Options after Autry

I'm guessing this will be Hopkins sales pitch:

1) You know and like me.

2) Melo will fund NIL at a top national level. Basically unlimited funds! We will offer the most money to any high school or transfer portal player that I want. I will get the top transfers and top high school talent.

3) Kiyan will stay at Syracuse and I can make him really good.

4) I've learned a lot working in the NBA and all these players want to be told how to make it to the NBA.

5) I will have Melo's funding to buy the best coaching staff and scouting possible to help me.

6) I will take a low salary.

7) My plan will cost 2-3 times less than hiring an upcoming mid major coach and hoping he works out.

8) Currently Syracuse is a mess and has no AD or Chancellor. I don't care who you hire & will take job now.

BTW - I still really want BH over Hop but having unlimited basketball funding for a few years is tempting. It would be funny if Syracuse buying a basketball title forced NCAA NIL changes.

I said 20 million on the roster, but maybe 30 million on the roster just to make sure. Kentucky went 22 million and aren't getting a good ROI.

what I’m dying to know is who Hop must be saying he could form his staff with lol

All the details we agonize over here I honestly question the BOT’s competency to consider.

In my opinion we find ourselves in this ridiculousness because my understanding is pre-NIL SU relied on ticket sale/dome revenue to fund its program and never even considered having a campaign geared towards asking alum for money. We started out miles behind everyone when NIL came around.

and still top 5 in the country. little old syracuse ny. in reality we were spoiled by the huge numbers we used to get.
Tickets sold is a lagging indicator, especially with long-time fans who worked hard to get their good seats. Actual butts in seats is what? 8k? 10k? That probably ranks close to every other struggling P4.

Even with the most expensive roster in the ACC I don’t see Hop being top 4 in the league let alone getting anywhere near winning a title.

Then factor in hiring what could be one of the worst ADs in the country and yeah … it’s fantasy land thinking that plays out as anything but failure.

So if McNamara makes it to the Elite 8, we just disregard that completely? The hype around him would be unreal and donors would be stepping up. Seems like a long shot but look at what St. Peter’s did.
We would look foolish in that scenario. Yes I agree.

U would see the Gerry McNamara is overrated clip 1,000x

Melo and GMac famously didn’t get along during the 2003 season. Boeheim had to mediate (I believe it was after the loss to Rutgers that things came to a head).

Obviously that was a million years ago when both were young, immature adults. But who knows if they’ve ever been close.
No idea about that.
I just assumed since they both bleed orange and won the national championship together (it would never have happened without both of their efforts) that they would have been close, or at least cordial.

Thats actually kind of sad if they are little more now than former teammates who stay out of each others way.

Well, I am a season ticket holder and would be willing to give Hop a chance.
Not my first option to be sure.
But if he could take over now and throw Red out the door, that would create a lot of good will for me.

Count me as another who won't renew season tickets if it's Hop

(I'm moving and wasn't renewing anyway but don't let the BoT know that)
I'm not getting pre-mad, but if it is Hop, what's the point of giving another dollar to SU? It was a good run. Wonderful memories, but it would be about as clear a move that we're waiving the white flag and surrendering ever being good again. And if we can't compete, I get it, that's the world we're in now, but I have finite time and resources.

Who does Red think should be his successor? Like I know someone asked him on the radio show in a messed up way. But it would be interesting if they ask him as an alum if he would stay inside or go outside. In a weird sort of way, I actually think Red might be more real and give a logical solution than Boeheim would and direct Syracuse outside.

Not to mention Hop with Lykes as an AD who we know mishandles funding…

I agree.

I think it will be difficult for whoever is really doing the hire to reject the Hopkins plan where Syracuse doesn't spend very much of it's own money while getting crazy basketball funding to hire someone they already like.

We need to discuss how stupid this NIL obsession is. UCF has one of the worst financial situations in the country and is 20-7 in the best league in the country(Big 12).

NC State has probably double to triple their money and got boat raced last night by a team likely with a lower budget because their coach isn't as good.

The fact this is the only thing the powers at be are thinking about is scary.

Even with a Giant cash infusion we are never getting more than Duke or UNC.

We can beat them with good coaching and a good system though.

I do greatly appreciate the info you provide. No messenger shooting here. Just sick to my stomach reading what you have to say.
If any syracuse.com sportswriter has a conscience they would get ahead of this story and expose her NOW. A PR war is the only way to save SU from shooting itself in the mouth.
