Consensus

eInteresting that Pitt and Wake are 12th and 13th, how can they be any good with recruiting like that? They don't have top 30 classes!!!

FSU should be competing for national championships with their recruiting! I don't get it.

Bunch of nonsense outside the true bluebloods.
precisely. recruiting outside of the top guys is a crapshoot as we all know. from there on, it's about development and coaching. Our issue this year wasn't talent -- it was execution and coaching.

Who cares? Our resident piss-pot crew will find some way to dump on it.

And our resident pollyanna's will find a way to make the worst ranked class in the league into contenders

Given we've had 5 out of 6 losing seasons when we should be able to schedule 6 wins a year I'm not sure the truth is somewhere in the middle

Recruiting rankings are certainly flawed, but I do think the fact that this program's recruiting classes are always (in the last 20 years) ranked outside of the top 50 is connected to the fact that the team's performances are consistently ranked outside of the top 50.

I would be more optimistic about recruiting if occasionally "independent" recruiting services liked a Syracuse class as much as this year's Rutgers or Boston College classes. Perhaps, I am being petty.
I would also feel better if this team outperformed it's recruiting rankings more consistently than it does. Has it happened three times in 20 seasons?

I'll take the pollyannas.

Where will the class rank when it is full?
In what ranking? HS only or HS + portal transfers?

Player movement means the ranking means less than it used to (as of like a year ago)

And yet our results against BC over Dino’s tenure have been ok. Rutgers overall record is always less than their recruiting haul would indicate.

I'm just using this year's classes as examples. Syracuse never has those.

Regardless of how much they mean, Syracuse is consistently ranked behind their "peers."

I don't want to be a downer. I am just tired of convincing myself that things are going well.

Uh, then you’re failing miserably.

Being ranked behind your peers in HS recruiting used to be a tougher spot - now you can make up the ground in the portal. So your level of concern about HS recruiting classes should prob be lessened?

Using "regardless" is weird in that context

I'm just pointing out that they are always behind their peers. Good for us that it no longer matters.

Moving on: is there a site that includes the transfer players in the rankings? I want to be more positive.

I'd rather have a better class than our peers too. I said it was "lessened" not that it "no longer matters"

2 four 7 has a new mixed ranking. Since we're less than 1/2 way in, it prob won't be very impressive. I'd check in after the next signing period and then again after spring ball. The game has changed a bit

Are you anticipating it being impressive at some point?

I was not really able to follow today… so what’s the consensus?

Did we hit what was to be expected? Any surprises? Positive vibes?
Agree with the sober emotionless takes. Good start, everyone belongs. No superstars on paper, but eventual contributors. Don't see anyone who is going to step in immediately to one of our positions of need, among the HS players. But as others said, we didn't lose anyone at the last minute, and picked up some surprises. So, trending positive.

The safety transfer will make a difference immediately.

It's notable that we see good existing players recruiting their buds to the team. Puts the outgoing transfers in a clearer light.

The program's future in the near term will be determined by how well we do in the portal, for positions where we need someone to step in immediately.

We desperately need (IMO) at least one WR in the Etta-Tawo/Jackson mold. I'd love to get two. And a QB. The trend of the better players coming in on defense continues. I hope that when the new OC is named we can make a bigger splash in the portal, for that side of the ball.

I have implicit trust in the OL we are pursuing, from any source. In Schmidt we trust.

So it's a good start, but it's all "plumbing". We need some fancy fixtures for it to be considered a success.

It's hard to have an objective, complete opinion right now because the class is probably half complete.

We'll be leaning more heavily on the portal this year than in years past simply because of the attrition and the imbalanced roster. We are VERY young and have a lack of upperclassmen, and the only way to balance that out is through the Portal or through JUCO. And since the portal's inception we've generally had better luck with the portal than JUCO.

Honestly, if out of this group, the TR S from Louisville and the Punter are the only first year 2 deep guys, I'm good with that. I don't suspect that will be the case because I think the defensive players can play, but I'm good with it if 12 of the 14 RS.

We still need help at WR/DL/RB/OL for next year, so if we land some quality prospects out of the portal that can upgrade those areas then I think we should all be pretty happy with how things played out. Yeah we didn't have any signing day victories over blue blood programs or anything like that, but with NIL that's going to be even harder now.

I don’t know. I do know it’s an opportunity to make the team better and it’s possible?

The S transfer from Louisville is a good example of filling a position of need with a good player.

If you want to squint at the future and imagine bad things, be my guest. Seems like a new way to feel bad about Syracuse football

I wasn't doing that. I was asking your opinion because you seem informed.

I'll take the pollyannas.

Here's a great pic for your new avatar! ;)

I know it's not flashy but I think we got some good kids and some pleasant surprises.
We also have a bunch of spots to fill out with portal kids and ones that might have missed their original spot.
Excited to see how the rest of the class turns out.

Still think the thing that is being missed is the impact that granting every player an extra year of eligibility while holding the scholarship limit at 85 had on many programs. We exited spring ball with 83 scholarship players and only 6 of those were scheduled to exhaust their eligibility in 2021. That means if every player with remain eligibility returned we could bring in only 8 signees. And Rhino was one of the 6 so that would have left 7.
Now of course we knew there would be attrition and that the transfer portal would exacerbate it, though I am not sure anyone would have predicted the magnitude . Not to mention which position groups would be most severely impacted.

Our class still rated last or next to last in the ACC. Until that improves we're going to be stuck with losing football.

right and we can draw all the lipstick we want on the pig, but until recruiting improves we are what we are.
