Development in and Around Syracuse Discussion

Nothing says forward thinking quite like keeping an elevated freeway running through a downtown for the sake of a shopping mall.

"uses traffic data that is nearly a decade old."

Maybe because a failing shopping mall keeps spending money to prevent the logical solution from being implemented?

The have been trying to run out the clock on this for a long time. I would guess that probably 3 years' delay is attributable to the Congel crowd. I mean, this last ditch proposal to have a "skyway" was absolute BS nuts.

The only question is whether they have enough money to buy enough legislators, but I think it's too late for that. It's with the federal government DOT now. I think it's beyond the reach of legislators.

Right, this is ultimately a federal decision now, which is just one of the myriad of reasons I'm grateful that it's the Biden admin and not Trump. I can't see any way that the community grid plan doesn't move forward with the current head of the USDOT.

Three developers have proposed turning the upper floors of the former Syracuse Bread Co. building at 200 Maple St. in Syracuse into market-rate apartments and the ground floor into commercial space.

Never want to downplay new jobs - especially potentially high-paying jobs - but man, this would put suburban sprawl into hyperdrive.
Unfortunately the city itself really has no large open spaces to accommodate anything that large. I think it said it’s 1250 acres which is almost 2 square miles for that facility.

Agreed. Global Foundaries moved their HQ to Saratoga County and look at the growth that’s happened there. Upstate NY is perfect for the industry due to the abundance of land and water needed to run these fabs.

We're going to have a semiconductor manufacturing build-out in this country whether we like it or not. Cannot count on the Taiwan supply chain for them like in the past. And if we're going to build factories, they ought to be in places like Syracuse that can sustain them rather than in Arizona. Building them here also gives another reason to keep other manufacturing jobs in our country, like auto plants in OH and MI. The reason why water-stressed Arizona is a future site for semiconductor manufacture is proximity to Mexico.

I’m totally in favor of it considering I just built a brand new house in Baldwinsville that I moved in 6 months ago.

There’s been too many instances of Nimby’s ruining projects in the area so hopefully the county, it’s business partners, and Schumer can get this done.

Known him for decades. Huge reason that Tipp hill has stayed a pretty vibrant area to live and party. He bought dozens of homes and renovated them, keeping the neighborhood housing up to date and well kept. He had a heart attack at 39 years of age, quit drinking, and added 45 very good years to his life. RIP Peter.

His brother, Danny, owned the Dubliner, an Irish pub & restaurant in DC too.

I believe Daniel still does own the Dubliner, but his son Gavin and nephew Danny run the show now.

LMAO

Why in the wide wide world of sports would the people of Syracuse want to replace I-81 with the "Harriet Tubman Memorial Freedom Bridge", which would create the exact same urban division that I-81 caused?

Dumbest idea ever.

The only people against the Community Grid plan are with the Mall, have stores in the Mall, are employed by the Mall, or are politicians receiving lots and lots of donations from those who own the Mall.

Plus a few dishonest people (ahem, prominent attorneys/former SU male cheerleaders) in DeWitt.
