Development in and Around Syracuse Discussion

Marc Malfitano?

No, Adam Bersin. Marc was working on stuff directly with Bob in those days, government relations stuff, mostly (tax breaks and really, succession planning, along with George Young).

Adam was replaced by a guy who I won't name, who unfortunately passed away from a heart attack at age 47, just a couple years after I left. His lieutenant is now working for Simon. Thought he was a decent guy, but he was kind of a dick.

Major apartment complex coming to Fayetteville. I think we will see a bunch more of these scatted throughout the county as zoning rules are changed to allow more dense housing.

The area needs this to grow.

I’m not sure that Fayetteville needs a mega apartment complex or needs to one to grow. There will be a hard pushback on this project.

Returning something to Amazon is sooooooooooo much easier than returning anything to any other retailer in my experience. I'd prefer to buy more expensive stuff from them, I know they won't screw around.
I agree about their return policy. I bought a rotating car seat hoping it could help my husband get in/out of the car because of back/hip issues. It was horrible and I went to return it and Amazon told me not to bother even returning it and gave me a credit instantly. I assume I wasn’t the only person who told them it was crap and a scam. They are good with returns and sure hope that doesn’t change as they become more and more powerful with little competition.

I just hope they address the infrastructure needed to support more housing. I know that much of their residential housing depends on septic tanks not sewers and that traffic and access on E Genesee St can be a horror. The housing is needed they just need to be proactive with planning for it.

They missed the opportunity back in the 70s to extend I-690 SE down towards Manlius

I've seen several presentations on Micron related development plans, and they are considering all these infrastructure issues, including need for affordable housing, looser zoning to permit more mixed use and more walkable neighborhoods in the suburbs, and all the sewer, water and electricity requirements that go with all that.

They're looking at recruiting and job creation for spouses. This has been the most comprehensive planning I've seen in economic development circles since I moved back over 20 years ago. In fact, it's all the planning that pushes back breaking ground in Clay.

I've experienced this at another merchant and really don't consider this method "good with returns" - it left me with an enormous piece of junk to dispose of on my own. Sure, money back is nice...but they're socializing this external cost of junk storage/disposal among all the purchasers who weren't sent what they asked for. Drives me nuts.

My return wasn’t huge with no problem rolling it up and putting it right in the garbage. I got the credit before my garbage will even be picked up next week. Now if I purchased something very large, it would be an issue.

No doubt, but there's a cost there beyond the consumer as well - to the hauler or the municipality. And the environmental cost of manufacturer->merchant->consumer->trash in such short order as well.

To me in my example, the drive of 10 miles to Staples to return it when it may just end up in either Amazon or the manufacturer’s garbage (not counting that shipping it back involves costs) is more costly than putting it in my garbage where I’ve already paid the hauler. It’s probably eliminated a number of additional steps/costs and the reason it’s more effective for both of us and the reason Amazon would tell the customer to just keep it.

This article is behind a paywall, but I was happy to see this part, since I feel as though it's a great location. Now it would be nice if the Lafayette Building adjacent to the park were developed as well. It's one of the last remaining buildings downtown that looks derelict:

One block south, the city solicited proposals to expand visitor and residential offerings downtown by encouraging the redevelopment of M. Lemp Park. The goal is to select a development team who will activate the corner.

To clarify what I said...

I agree with this. The worst traffic in CNY is surely along Route 5 from Lyndon Corners to the intersection with I481.

Traffic along the best alternate route during rush hour (Route 290 from East Syracuse to Burdick and where it intersects with Route 257 next to the canal) is getting progressively worse and is now near crisis stage.

That development is in a really bad place.

When I said this area, I meant CNY in general, not Fayetteville. Adding a lane to I481 (soon to be I81) is not going to help much when all that I81 traffic starts going through Dewitt.

As Go says, it is a shame we never built the extension to I690 that was to go through where Links at Erie Village is now. Or completed the I481 loop around the whole site (not just the east side).

These things weren't a big deal as long as the county population stagnated indefinitely.

They are going to be a big deal now. Interested to see what is done with Fayetteville and with Route 31. These are the whole issues. I think they almost have to make Verplank/Mud Mill a four lane road and have to extend most of Route 31 to 6 lanes.

I don't know what you do with the Route 5 situation in Fayetteville. Add a lane in both directions? Widen Route 290, Route 257, Lyndon Road and Cedar Bay?

The NIMBYs are going to be up in arms!

It is going to be expensive. Some homes and businesses are going to have to move.

IMO, adding on/off ramps to 481 (soon to be 81) where it passes over 290/Manlius Center Road could help alleviate some of it. Of course, it looks like that would need to involve land purchases/eminent domain by the state in order to have enough room for those ramps. And maybe it would be redundant with the E. Genesee ramps on 481 and the Bridge Street ramps on 690.

Other than that, I'm not sure there's much else you can do. You don't want to turn Burdick Street into a mini highway, as it passes through a fairly dense neighborhood on the way to Manlius Center Road.

It's taking them forever just to widen the bridge over Manlius Center Rd to 3 lanes each.

I drive past there daily sometimes multiple times, that's one of the least active sites I've seen. Don't see many guys there often at all.
