Development in and Around Syracuse Discussion

When it comes to this 81 thing I’m not concerned with those that live outside the city. If you want a cheaper home with land or to live in a development, live in the suburbs. If you want easy access to the city amenities, live in Syracuse. If you want cheap housing with land but also want easy access to or through a thriving city, move to Fantasyland. Without a thriving city center none of the suburbs exist. I live in Cicero and I’m 100% for tearing down the elevated section of 81 because it is the best thing for the city of Syracuse.

I love this post.

This is really what it boils down to: a lot of people want something that doesn't exist. There's no such thing as a healthy Onondaga County that's easily driveable in 15 minutes. If people want a sprawling no-growth region with continued minimal increase in home values as builders throw up cheap crap in farm fields, we can have that. And we'll continue to pay the piper as short-sighted suburban towns absorb increased infrastructure costs every year.

Alternatively, people can recognize that Central New York's success is tied to Syracuse and the planning decisions we make for the benefit of the city will determine whether the region thrives or dies.

But this is a zero sum game and I can't think of any real-life examples of a region that has it both ways - suburban-centric planning and a healthy center city. "Fantastyland" is the right word.

Many have done just that. I've lived in "Fantasyland" now for some 24 + years living in various 'burbs of Charlotte...a thriving city. It helps tremendously when you have solid leadership with vision and forward thinking.

It also helps when you can annex at will. Incidentally, is the concept of a merger between Syracuse and Onondaga County officially dead?

I've been wondering the same thing lately because you haven't heard much about it. Maybe just waiting for a new administration to be settled into the mayor's office? I thought that there was state money given to the county or city that was dependent on certain services being merged.

Just curious, is anyone in this thread addressing 81 thru Scranton, PA, because it has been under construction since 1979.

I thank you for your time.
Funny, I was watching The Grand Tour (formerly Top Gear) and in the 2nd season Clarkson takes a Ford GT from Manhattan to Niagara Falls via 81. He's in PA and comes up on a traffic jam and was a little surprised. My very first thought was construction! Turned out to be a nasty car accident. But those aren't usually far after construction traffic jams when 81 turns into a race track by people frustrated from sitting in merge ahead traffic jams.

Pretty condescending. Who really believes those estimates? lol Just catch 1 traffic light and that will be 3 minutes. I have some great property in the Cicero swamp. :) Regardless.. it's the attitude...

Sadly just gives more people reasons not to head to the city but for Baldwinsville to head to either the route 31 Clay corridor , Camillus Township etc. I don't even live in B'ville either saying this. Doctors, one day surgeries, urgent cares have already moved away from the city proper. I am a big supporter of the city , having been brought up, schooled in the city, purchasing our first home there after marrying. I only moved to the northern suburbs because I got a job in Oswego county after my city mfg company moved to Tennessee.. After 6 months driving from the city (trying hard to make it work) with no quick access to a highway from the Bellevue CC area to Oswego county adding a minimum of at least a half hour to my daily commute, we reluctantly moved to the northern suburbs off 481 near Great Northern. Ignoring the fate of an interstate to only city resident concerns is short sighted. I fought everyday with coworkers, neighbors etc the misconceptions of the city and dismissing commuting concerns will only accelerate the city vs county divisiveness that has been promoted. It seems that's how winners are currently being crowned, by how divisive and dismissive they can be of other groups serious concerns while respect and conciliatory proposals are considered a sign of weakness. Just sad.
Not reality. Route 31 is a mini Erie Blvd. It can take 20 minutes to get from the village on to route 481.
Heck, sometimes it takes 5 minutes to get onto the on-ramp after you turn onto Soule Road.
Then there is the off ramp on to 31 from 481 N, which is backed up at least a quarter mile on the highway at evening drive time.

People will do the quickest route:

Baldwinsville to Lafayette: + 4 minutes.

Charts like that are great. Probably not accurate in any way. But they look nice.

The entire state of PA has been under construction since 1979.

For years I have been taking the NE Extension of the PA Turnpike, which entails exiting 81 at Exit 175 and then getting back on 81 at Clark's Summit. Sure, you have 2 small EZ Pass tolls, but the speed limit is 70 and you bypass Scranton, both to and fro from DC.

And don't even get me started on the shitshow that is 81 through Binghamton these days.

There is the one area on 81 that goes through Scranton that I swear to go has been under construction forever and I am not kidding, somebody needs to call GMAC to see if he can something about it and get it cleaned up

Scranton - on the way to the Clemson game hit a 5 Guys. 2 old dudes saw the Cuse gear, asked if I was Gerry, if I knew Gerry, and how awesome Gerry was. It's like going back in time.

Anyway, blvd for Cuse!

Did you know the state flower of Pennsylvania is the orange cone.

They grow wild right up through the pavement sometimes.

Has anyone noticed the new building that is being constructed on the old brooklawn golf course, Near Carrier Circle? Great to see.

Mark, I know the owner of that site. He suppose to build a new hotel there but is having some easement problems (entrance/exit) with town coming off the circle.

I thought the entrance was thru McDonalds easement.
