Development in and Around Syracuse Discussion

Just curious, is anyone in this thread addressing 81 thru Scranton, PA, because it has been under construction since 1979.

I thank you for your time.
haha, oh my god yes. I've been driving that stretch for the past 12 years and it's been under construction the whole time.

why would PRIVATE plow, plow a street they are not being paid for???private means private!!! no one but the owner is paying to maintain them. they are not a city, county, or state payroll --with benefits!!
i do wonder if the consolidation of city, municipality and county services would be valuable, streamline and coordinate services, saving money be more in the long run.
My uncle used to do it on the county roads in Oswego county from time to time on his way somewhere. He didn't have to, but he figured he was already driving somewhere and thought he would drop the plow on the way to help the people that didn't have vehicles as capable.

Is it possible that SU just replaces the dome roof with another inflatable?

That is the choice they made the first two times the roof needed to be replaced. It would be out of step with the rest of the world and risky as hell but in the short term, it would save money.

Thanks Tom i have not heard anything but i can see them kicking this down the road.

A new inflatable roof just pushes the Dome reno off for another 15-20 years.

If that happens, we may see a whole new stadium build in the 2040's.

Wasn't there concern that air supported roof technology is mostly outdated and that very few if any still exist? I imagine it will be incredibly difficult to service any issues that may arise being the only one still standing. Not sure how realistic or cost effective an option this is, and given the issues in MN, probably increases insurances costs tremendously. Would love to see a breakdown of what another 20+ of a air supported roof in Syr will cost for those policies, vs simply doing a hard roof and no bells and whistles.

I take some hope in the comment that SU is in great financial shape.

Maybe they've put some feelers out and they now feel confident that Ben Walsh and Joanie will help strike a deal with Albany.

I thought the big problem with this was - nobody makes those inflatable roofs anymore?

And with good reason - it's not if they will fail, but when.

This s--- should be so simple if not for the fact that it's a little patronizing.

See what Doucette is saying? See what he cites? Ask someone in Seattle or wherever Amazon ends up what makes a healthy community. Go ahead, they're human beings, ask.

Now, see John DeFrancisco? Hear what he says? Who are you going to listen to, the party with real-world experience or the guy who's lived in the same neighborhood in a dying city for 70 years?

I grew up down the street from DeFrancisco and my parents still live in that neighborhood. I hope they move soon because it’s a disgrace how much of a dangerous s—-hole the surrounding area has become in the last 15 years.

A guy was shot and killed last month outside the corner store I used to ride my bike to and buy baseball cards or candy as a kid.

I understand the useful life of the 81 viaduct is past due but the city will continue to get bypassed, regardless of the roadway used, as it continues to become small pockets of good blocks surrounded by vast stretches of bad neighborhoods (like the North Side has become).

My two memories of that store were the elevator operator calling off the floors, especially mezzanine, and the overhead suction tubes for sending payments up to accounting. Things a kid didn't see elsewhere in the small towns of upstate NY. ;)

Funny those are my most vivid memories too. Addis and Flahs seemed to be a little bit fancier, smaller and more exclusive stores than Deys, Edwards and Chappells back then. My grandfather was a Syracuse policeman and when my grandmother would bring me into these stores, these men would nod and acknowledge her. I'd ask who they were and she'd say he's a 'store dick', a friend of your grandpa (off duty policemen who were store detectives). As a kid when I'd see a man in those stores and grocery stores, I'd wonder if he was a policeman or not. You are right - memories are funny when you are a kid.
