Development in and Around Syracuse Discussion

Feels like most of this can be explained by millenials ending their lease in liverpool and moving downtown. I think the net county +/- would be a better measuring stick.
I'd say you are partially correct. Syracuse's affordable housing is also a big draw. The downtown area is pretty vibrant but they need a few more businesses (like TCGPlayer) to set up downtown.

Haylor, Freyer & Coon is moving downtown right now to One Park Place.

Then there's this.

And SU just moved it's entire marketing department to the Warehouse...

Ii is better than nothing and might be the best deal the county could get, but that lease is going to cost chicken feed to get out of down the road.

If the Mets want to go and have a better offer, they will.

The Mets I think like the idea of someone within an hour flight. I guess Hartford, Albany, New Haven and Central NJ all could be contenders.

The Nats would take SYR back in a heartbeat.

Problem is, the Mets now own the Syracuse franchise. If they leave, they don't just take the affiliation with them, they take the whole franchise. You'd then need another franchise to relocate to Syracuse, which would probably be a near impossible task.

Don’t know if it has been mentioned before but Sidearm Sports moved from the ischool to downtown a few months ago.

As Mark says, our proximity to NYC is our biggest asset. Not only that, but Binghamton, where the Mets AA franchise is located, is an hour south. Very nice setup for the Mets. There are a lot of players that come and go between Binghamton, Syracuse and NYC.

It was ridiculous when they had their AAA franchise in New Orleans or Vegas.

Syracuse has been last or second last in attendance in the IL for a really long time. I know attendance is up markedly this season. Hope that continues. If attendance can just rise to somewhere in the middle of the pack, we will be a lot better positioned to host AAA baseball for the foreseeable future.

If they want to increase attendance all they need to do is schedule more games with the Scranton-WB Railriders to take advantage of the Yankees IL rehab shuttle. (j/k)

I suspect one unspoken side effect of the community grid will be a push to get more people living downtown.

Downtown needs a Whole Foods market.
There are certainly enough well off people there now to support a high end grocery store. Surprised Wegman’s hasn’t moved in there yet to fill the gap. There is money to be made...

I don’t believe that Wegmans has any stores within the city limits. I think their former store on Pond St closed in 2012 had been their only one. Their stores in Western Lights and on James St are both just outside the city limits.

Looks like they target high income areas where they can build a really big store. I don’t think it would be easy to get a big enough plot to build a giant store downtown (though it would be awesome) but does Wegman’s ever build smaller stores in urban environments?

I think there are enough well to do people in the area to allow it to happen, especially if they built it in between the university/medical complex and downtown.

You want an early home run with the fence sitters on the I81 viaduct replacement? Get Wegman’s to build a big store on or just off the new boulevard.

Every time I come back to CNY to visit family I an even more impressed with the continued development downtown. 1-2 more decent businesses down there and a Trader Joes might lure me back home.

In case you didn’t know, there is a TJ on Erie Blvd.
