Access is probably more difficult with the highway. I've stayed there before for events and it's not awful, but yeah, it's a 50+ year old Best Western located next to an overpass. The Hotel Syracuse and Marriott downtown are much better, walkable, and surrounded by all of downtown.
It will probably be easier to access with the grid than with the current I-81. People, the non-highway portion is only 1.4 miles long!I mean, the stupidity on display in this op-ed is breathtaking. And this guy is in charge of all of the business operations at the hotel?!?

100%. We have people come up to visit our office on Washington and they will sometimes choose to stay there. Without thinking about it, my brain just wants to avoid that whole area...for whatever reason.Especially in that area, it's creepy. So much opportunity for development, but the viaduct destroys all of that.

I'll have to check it out!XO Taco has brought some life back to that area. Went there to pick up food a couple weeks ago and they had tables on the sidewalk with string lights and every table was full. The redevelopment of the adjacent former AME church should help things along further. On the other side, conversion of the old Smith Restaurant Supply building should breathe some more life into the are. I have a feeling that further development is on the way once that stupid viaduct comes down.

Yeah but that swamp white oak next to it that a few people told me might be original from the wetland complex that used to be downtown...Id never stay at Crowne. It looks like trash from I-81.
Has anything gone into the old Empire Brewing in Armory Square?
Sheesh…bar, kitchen, and then all that space where the brewing equipment was.I thought I had heard that the owner of the building was planning on converting the bar into office space or even apartments, but I recently heard that some private events have been held there, so I believe the bar and kitchen are still in place. No actual business in there, though, to my knowledge.
That op ed smells of some cash flowing into the general manager's hands so he would write it. How in the world does RT81 in it's current form improve their bookings? I would think people stay there because of it's proximity to the campus and downtown, RT81 would have nothing to do with that.I mean, the stupidity on display in this op-ed is breathtaking. NY officials grow optimistic about luring semiconductor chip plant to Clay, lawmaker says
Two companies eye White Pine Commerce Park in Clay for the transformational project.www.syracuse.com
Which they absolutely should.“This is a project like no other and probably will require some pretty decent incentives,” he said. “I think everybody walked out of the meeting knowing what their job is going to be. The state has presented their offer and the companies will probably come back with their offer.”
Economic development officials want to make sure the incentives come with requirements aimed at benefiting the broader community, Stirpe said.
Which they absolutely should.

This is what gives me pause about the proposal. It's a terrible location. We don't need more sprawl, especially up there, and our job centers especially need to be served by multiple modes of transportation, ideally in a somewhat central location.
That said, this is a space-intensive type of project. Not a lot of good sites that could accommodate this (Amazon gobbled up one of them). It's a shame that Carrier's sitting on so much under-utilized space in another.
Water and Electrical substation are a big driver of this location.
Definitely, but far and away is site control. And when the County was speculatively putting this together, obviously cost was the biggest driver after utilities. So a greenfield outside the band of development made the most sense.
I get it, but I don't like it. Economic development can be a great thing, but I don't want our community to look like exurban North Carolina.
