Development in and Around Syracuse Discussion

Access is probably more difficult with the highway. I've stayed there before for events and it's not awful, but yeah, it's a 50+ year old Best Western located next to an overpass. The Hotel Syracuse and Marriott downtown are much better, walkable, and surrounded by all of downtown.

Right; they benefit from proximity to SU, are hurt by the dead zone separating them from downtown, and really suffer due to those tiny pie-shaped rooms (this was a popular design for hotels in the mid-'60s but there are virtually none of them operating as hotels today).

I guess it's OK to share this here - I've heard directly from Kyle himself that viaduct noise is one factor that makes certain rooms less desirable and keeps rates down.

Don't know how the Save 81 hucksters latched onto him, but he's FOS in the op-ed.

Hello? 1967 called and it wants it's shtty design asthetic back.

That place looks like it smells like cigarettes

I mean, the stupidity on display in this op-ed is breathtaking. And this guy is in charge of all of the business operations at the hotel?!?

It will probably be easier to access with the grid than with the current I-81. People, the non-highway portion is only 1.4 miles long!

100%. We have people come up to visit our office on Washington and they will sometimes choose to stay there. When they walk over they always seem to remark about that odd disconnect to cross over to downtown.

Especially in that area, it's creepy. So much opportunity for development, but the viaduct destroys all of that.

Without thinking about it, my brain just wants to avoid that whole area...for whatever reason.

XO Taco has brought some life back to that area. Went there to pick up food a couple weeks ago and they had tables on the sidewalk with string lights and every table was full. The redevelopment of the adjacent former AME church should help things along further. On the other side, conversion of the old Smith Restaurant Supply building should breathe some more life into the are. I have a feeling that further development is on the way once that stupid viaduct comes down.

I'll have to check it out!

Has anything gone into the old Empire Brewing in Armory Square?

I thought I had heard that the owner of the building was planning on converting the bar into office space or even apartments, but I recently heard that some private events have been held there, so I believe the bar and kitchen are still in place. No actual business in there, though, to my knowledge.

Sheesh…bar, kitchen, and then all that space where the brewing equipment was.
Great space for a pub…what a waste!

That op ed smells of some cash flowing into the general manager's hands so he would write it. How in the world does RT81 in it's current form improve their bookings? I would think people stay there because of it's proximity to the campus and downtown, RT81 would have nothing to do with that.

Exactly. Someone (congels/pyramid obviously) paid him to write this drivel.

“This is a project like no other and probably will require some pretty decent incentives,” he said. “I think everybody walked out of the meeting knowing what their job is going to be. The state has presented their offer and the companies will probably come back with their offer.”

Economic development officials want to make sure the incentives come with requirements aimed at benefiting the broader community, Stirpe said.
Which they absolutely should.

Saw this post on Twitter today regarding this location's proximity (or lack thereof) to the nearest bus route:

In Malta, much of the Global Foundries site is woods & trails...as well as 4 softball fields and a few soccer fields created with money from GF and now owned/maintained but the town

This is what gives me pause about the proposal. It's a terrible location. We don't need more sprawl, especially up there, and our job centers especially need to be served by multiple modes of transportation, ideally in a somewhat central location.

That said, this is a space-intensive type of project. Not a lot of good sites that could accommodate this (Amazon gobbled up one of them). It's a shame that Carrier's sitting on so much under-utilized space in another.

People want parking, so we're going to put in 200 acres of parking lots. No one wants to live next to a commercial development, so we'll put in a 500-ft setback and surround everything with a 100-ft buffer of trees.

How are we going to get people to walk?

Water and Electrical substation are a big driver of this location.

Definitely, but far and away is site control. And when the County was speculatively putting this together, obviously cost was the biggest driver after utilities. So a greenfield outside the band of development made the most sense.

I get it, but I don't like it. Economic development can be a great thing, but I don't want our community to look like exurban North Carolina.

Reminds me of this meme that I saw on Twitter recently:
