I had a forced air furnace and trust me, it uses electricity and when we had a power outage… no heat. That happens now.
Battery backup might help prevent people from freezing some day.
As we move from fossil fuels to other ways to generate heat, the grid will need to be fortified. That’s part of the plan.
Extreme weather is not a governor’s fault.

I heat with propane and it also runs my backup generator. Someone is going to sue the state and win! It also runs my fireplace.

Not intended to start a political fight, but while a governor, president, legislator, or local government officials, emergency responders, etc., cannot be held to control the weather, lunatic accusations excepted, the response to the weather and meeting the needs of the people is solely at their feet, for good or ill. And they should be rewarded for good or ill.
Playing politics in an emergency should be a felony on top of any other crimes and should carry tort penalties, too. I like Arizona's idiot driver law. The desert is subject to flash floods, if an idiot drives into a wash when it has been blocked, they will do anything they can to rescue an idiot driver but the idiot driver will pay all expenses. It only takes four inches of moving water to move a Humvee.

Oil and gas wells go much deeper, more than 10X WIPP. It has been suggested that they can bury waste down that far. I heard this from an oil and gas executive engineer, I don't know of any attempts, to date.

There should be, but it’s not exactly an apples to apples comparison. While the waste from solar is toxic, I don’t think it’s radioactive. Am I wrong? It’s not my area of expertise.

True...5 years ago heat pumps were basically more energy efficient at temps at or above about 32 degrees. They are best suited for more moderate winter weather areas.
I'm not sure if any improvement has been made since then.

Wow! This thread got not just political, but also fairly technical! I’m enjoying following this one! I will say that I worked on design and operation of a NYC building with a substantial air source heat pump array. As others have said, it struggled in extremes and the building has not been able to eliminate its traditional boiler/hot water system. The NYC “all-electric” incentives were ultimately a good idea, but poorly timed and rolled out. The grid can’t support, and ignoring the existing steam system has caused huge cost spikes for needed steam. The programs aimed at developers and landlords instead of energy providers. ConEd is finally looking into ways of providing steam with renewable electric fired boilers fed from offshore wind, micro-nuclear, and other sources. Micro-grids are also a new but logical consideration. What surprised me was learning that NYS gives little incentive consideration to hydroelectric, and the state actually generates a good amount of it.

I just went through this process with my own home. The heat pump really acted more as the A/C, heat source, till about 32 degrees and then I was still going to need a furnace for backup. I just ended up going with a traditional furnace and AC condenser due to the cost and being in upstate ny. If I had the dough I would have put some type of solar, geothermal combo in. Needless to say the good heat pumps were expensive. The rest were crap from China.

More like 24c with delivery fees in nys… cheaper to run a gas car if your mpg is 30 or higher. I know I got a phev and I only charge for free at work. I’d never use the public charge ones as it is equiv of 6dollars per gallon

At the same time that DRAM prices are going through the roof due to Ai datacenter demands. I would suspect that they may not be able to fill their tool orders as deep ultraviolet lithography tools are on severe backorder. There is one manufacturer of these tools in the world. ASML.

Construction is also delayed, the starting of the 1st fab facility has now been pushed back to at least mid 2026.

Yes the article slated the initial ground break is supposed to start before the end of the year but the start of the actual facility has been pushed back a bit and sounds like it may be even further.
