Dino and the media

I'm so tired of the hidden little digs, yes I r dum bekuze I think we have bad D, but it's not just 6 quarters. How do we rank in PPG given up? YPP? YPG? They don't just pick the last 6 quarters when posting those stats. Our D is bad, whether you think I r dum r not.

Who cares about YPP/YPG and every other meaningless stat. Points is all that matters. The defense was allowing 24.1 PPG until the last 2 games. That's pretty good in today's age.

That's one thing Shafer got right.

What facts did we have to support that he was going to leave? That was manufactured by our local press despite evidence to the contrary. This town is miserable and can’t have nice things. Syracuse.com included.

I have no idea if he was/is going to leave. My only point was that if he thinks this community has a problem handling winning he should try a diehard fball school. I am a supporter of Dino but I don't get his comments at all.

If he were to leave, the leading candidate to replace him is McDermott.

LMAO, oh forget it were trying to get better not worse. Plus you can't trade most of your best players in College, so that move won't work here.

Our fans and the media are going to do their best to run him off.
Bees why? This guy provides hope. We can all see the progress. Why do some want him gone?

Also, didn't you read the bball board this morning, Pearl31 says your hijacking and going off topic.

To be clear I don't want him gone, Ward on the other hand...

It's funny though because Shafer shared similar comments that you are sharing now about ISIS and the entire fanbase turned on him.
If this is in reference to my post, if it is that's a pretty good stretch... The isis comment went viral because he literally referenced people cutting people's heads off as it relates (or doesn't) to football in a press conference.

And just for the record, I raised an eyebrow, but didn't really care about that either... Just a dude who was struggling with his situation who made a terrible reference. If the fan base turned on him for that in and of itself, then I think it's pretty damning of our fanbase.

The local media isn't always helpful but what big time Div 1 team has a media group that is 100% helpful? Saban is constantly pissed at the local press and there's 10,000 other examples. This instance is all on Dino. If you think the question is bad then let the media know about it, why say the "community" has to handle winning better. The community isn't calling plays, making personnel decisions, and making injury decisions. Until the community is making those decisions they don't have to handle jack squat. This isn't Eastern Washington or Bowling Green, if Dino is having an issue with how the "community" is upset with season spiraling for the second year what the heck is he doing to do at Florida, Tennesee. Texas A&M, or UCLA if he loses games like this to in conference teams? Those fanbases are giving out death threats for Christ sake.

Also I have lived with the JB and John Desko/Simmons Era for 30 + years, trust me I know all about winning and handling it, what we have now sure as hell isn't that.
Excellent post!

It was good, now it's not. The thing that I keep seeing is how we played 2nd string Qbs early on or a very hurt 1st string Tiger who their own fanbase wasn't sure why he was playing. If you get to dismiss the last two games from this stat, then I get to dismiss the Clemson/Pitt wins(doesn't really make sense does it). What matters is where we end up at the end of the year. It won't be good.

this stuff is so stupid. taking a shot at the community lol. some of you act like he kicked your dog. i sure didn't think he took a shot at me or my community. maybe those of you who did do have an issue? you're probably the people who yell at cashiers, or skimp on a tip because of the kitchen and not the waitress. some people need to stop being so serious, take the entertainment value from it, laugh a little more and enjoy life. my god.

hmm. ask yourself why. go watch some of the video highlights at espn from the weekend. watch closely, slow things down, pause the tape. watch who goofs up.

good ahead and dismiss whatever you want. i don't care. the defense was playing fine and now it's not. instead of placing blame talk about the reasons why and the solutions. most of you have no idea what youre' talking about. it's wards fault blah blah, it's scheme blah blah. like i said, go watch the tape. in large part it's players not making plays. you can't teach instinct.

Actually I never blame the waitress for a bad bar drink or food issues. If he kicked my dog I would literally probably kick him back, not post about it on an anonymous board, and the issue here is that while he's telling us how to handle success against Clemson he's making statement about people not wanting to play us. I think that back-fired big time. I think he fired up some other teams and then put the blame on the fanbase. It's Jake - get a life type stuff and it wasn't ok then and isn't ok now.

As for you and Finwad telling us not to take this football stuff so serious, did you guys defend Shafer for his ISIS comments? Because he was saying the same thing as you guys.

Seriously? You’ve had him leaving 10
times the past two years yourself.

Reading the full quote it seems the Post Standard reporters really cherry picked a few words to attack Dino.

Reading the quote it seems like Dino should have edited out about half of his words and offered a concise, cohesive answer. Not trying to pick sides but he’s constantly speaking in generalities and meandering all over the place. Something like ‘we all got excited and put the cart before the horse. It was a great win. But there was a lot of work left to do. Not sure we appreciated that as much as we should have.’ Would be fine.

What the media says or doesn’t say about this program is irrelevant to how they have played. And they’ve struggled.

I've seen alot of coaching interviews. Good defensive coaches know that you put people in position to make plays, I don't feel like we are. We are rushing 3, dropping 8, and watching QBs throw in front of the zone. That's scheme. We put no pressure on the QB, let their WRs find the holes in the zone, and the QB gets to play pitch and catch with nobody around him. You should go watch some of the earlier tapes because I remember many times when the secondary was completely out of position and the only thing that saved us was a poorly thrown ball by a backup QB. They weren't fine, they were ok against 2nd team QBs. They get torched against people's #1.

Dont write a story about this instead take a quote out of context and run with it because it gives you clicks. And then wonder why Dino has issues with the local media.

Dude — if you run that entire quote you’ll have zero readers by the end of the day. The media literally has to take part of that long-winded, meandering and largely meaningless statement to get some sort of quote. People always talk about context yet no one will read anything longer than 140 characters.

No one wants him gone. Let's not get sensitive over being critical over his comments. He's frustrated and used the wrong words IMO. Like I said he must be having some bad days w how this is finishing up.

i'm not going anywhere because i'm here to the end. Hope this ship turns around in 2018.

Maybe Dino is talking about stuff like this:

At the end of the WF game I witnessed someone who was no more than 5 rows from the field screaming at the team things like:

You guys suck; calling out players by name and cursing them; and calling the defense gutless quitters. Several players turned to look at this individual, so there is no doubt that he was heard.

Now while I'm guessing that alcohol was involved, it doesn't make this obnoxious behavior any more acceptable.

I, like every other fan here, am disappointed by the way the team has performed for the past 2 weeks. I believe that feeling disappointment, though, does not mean folks have a license to vent on a bunch of college kids who are battered, thin in numbers, missing their on field leader, and in all likelihood more disappointed than we are.

My sacrifice this season has been writing a few checks, driving 4 hours each way to the dome, and spending time with my sons and a bunch of good folks at the fine lot tailgate. The players have lifted weights, sweated and trained for months, foregone social events, fallen asleep in academic and team classrooms and literally bled for this team.

That said, I do believe that this job has proven a little more challenging than Dino thought it would be, but I have no problem with him preaching togetherness, patience and hope. I think he believes that he is really close to being consistently good, and these last 6 quarters has frustrated him as it has us. Maybe that frustration popped up a little with his comments.

I confess I did have a fleeting thought of not making the post Thanksgiving drive up and down 81, but upon further thought I believe the players - especially the seniors- and the coaches who have sacrificed to try and win for us deserve to be sent off or into the off-season with our support.

I'll be at the dome Saturday, and I hope to see a lot of you there.

My fear with the local press is they make it difficult to produce a winner in this town. Syracuse in general feeds off negative news and the local media feeds into that.

I know people hate Boeheims pressers, but he’s always known when directly go after certain reporters.
The press doesn't make it more difficult to produce a winner. That is silly. Every area feeds off negativity. No one likes to lose.

Exactly, I am already looking forward to next year just hoping the last fourth of the season doesn't end in a complete meltdown again.

Yeah I'd like to stress that I think getting rid of Dino would be a fing disaster. We need stability, we need to see this thing through, we need to see his system with his recruits. What I'm not ok with is burying my head in the sand along the way, tried that with Gerg, tried that with Mooch/Mornhiweg/Marinelli in Detroit. Our defense was historically bad last year, and has regressed to those levels again this year. Fix the damn D Dino.
