Dino's Game 8 Press Conference | Notre Dame

Trouble in Paradise? I sure hope not, it almost sounds like Babers wasn’t happy with Anae’s play calling.

My final call. No penalty on Fuentes hit. Penalty on Clemson hit.
I know it sounds homerish, but I think that's right. It's not clear at all that the QB was out of bounds when Fuentes shoves him. His foot was definitely going to come down out of bounds, but the QB wasn't OOB yet when the hit starts.

Shrader is a full step out of bounds when the Clemson defender finishes pushing him down.

Sucks.

“Emotional boundaries”

One day, thats the dream

Fuentes got shoved from behind. Could have been a block in the back, causing the contact. But the ref flagged it because it "looked" worse than it was.

Still no excuse for why the hit on our player -- which was much worse than what Fuentes did -- didn't draw the same call.
I think that shove made a big difference honestly. He is 260-270, was at full speed, and got shoved from behind. I get why the ref made the call, but I agree that there was not much he could have done about that, and was not nearly as bad as the shove by trotter on Shrader

It says he should have more than 5 carries. Why do I need to provide a number?

Tucker’s under utilization negatively impacted the outcome of the game.
What was bizarre about getting him getting so few carries was the success he was having running the ball. If we're struggling to run the ball because the defense is focused on taking it away, I don't mind adjusting and giving him less carries.

Babers on clock management issues against Clemson: “There was a 25 second mistake…It was bad. It's been handled internally. It won't happen again."

Babers on RB Sean Tucker’s lack of involvement: “He should have more than five carries in a football game. That’s been addressed.”

Babers compares DL Elijah Fuentes-Cundiff’s late hit penalty to a play where LB Marlowe Wax pulled up against Florida State’s Jordan Travis last year, which led to a long run. Babers says the coaching staff teaches defenders to “escort” ball carriers out of bounds. Why wasn't the same flag called later in the game? The calls were turned into the league, no response received yet.

No injury updates.

We'll need our "12th Man" against Notre Dame.

Babers on the defense’s performance against Clemson: “It was unbelievable. It’s one I wish we could have had a ‘W’ with. We also understand that we win together, we lose together.”

Babers on the No. 2 receiver position: “I can’t wait for someone to develop as the second receiver. It’s not something that’s given, it’s earned. I can’t wait for someone to earn it.”

Babers on his team’s mentality: “When we play, we’re trying to win the game. Our guys felt we had a great chance to win, and were very disappointed when we didn’t.”
Like everything about what he said. As I mentioned in post game, 6-1 earns mulligan. Its a tough loss but hopefully lessons were learned and we move on

I think they are both hits out of bounds. About as similar of plays as you are going to see.
From the technical stand point, I absolutely see the push being a factor. I do. It sucks for Fuentes because with all angles it doesn’t look malicious and I don’t know what else he can do. But we talk about that every week in the nfl. There was a heinous call on the giants on their last drive where I don’t know what else the dt could do unless he levitated.

From reality, as in how they call it on every level, both are called like 95 percent of the time. The non call is much much more of an outrage to me.

No not at all. Just tweaking next game plan. I’m sure Dino is quite happy with RA (6-1) 16th ranked.

Agree with both points.

I completely disagree. I re-watched it several times too. You should not be able to run up the sideline like that then tap your toe out of bounds at the last second while still appearing to be heading directly up the field. How the hell is a defender supposed to play that? Its not like he was heading directly out of bounds and you know he is going out and you get him out of bounds just to get a shot on him. And if the counter argument is that he was hit out of bounds at that is the rule then they need to change the rule. It just dumb all around.

This.

The QB was actively trying to go up field just inside the out of bounds line... he had to be forced out by contact.

It matters where your shoulders are squared... if they are squared directly upfield, you are moving upfield and not trying to go out of bounds.

It was an absolutely BS call because he was unquestionably going up field.

The Schrader no-call was also BS, because it was the textbook version and should have been called.

Agree with both points.
I thought so until this new video. He is toeing the line when the contact occurs. Granted not to many refs are sitting 50 ft above the play.

Why do I have this gnawing feeling that when SU submits a tape to the ACC showing a blatant personal foul on Clemson, the committee reviews the tape looking to see if they can find another hold or false start call to make against us?

The whole ref thing could be improved by having national refs instead of comference refs. There would still be missed calls, but the incentive to slant toward one team would be reduced.
Would it? It wouldn’t favor Alabama or Ohio State or somebody?

That’s a late hit and it’s not close. Period

A real league/business would fine them or hold them out of key matchups / title games. Not sure that happens with the ACC. You have to submit the egregious calls.
That ref probably got a bonus.

Dino was trying to take Fuentes off the hook in his presser and I admire the hell out of him for it. Leader. Kind of guy you'd want looking out for your kid if he was a college football player.
