It should be noted that I almost never listen to games on the radio. I go to all the homes games, some road games and watch the others on TV. I tried listening to them in the Dome but missed hearing the band, the crowd reaction, talking to my friends and listening to the sounds coming out of the opposition coaching box.
I do listen to the analysis post game and sometimes the pregame analysis.
What I want from the SU color guy is someone who knows what they are talking about. Someone who goes to practices, is trusted enough by the coaching staff to get insights regarding game plans and strategies. Someone who can explain what the offense and defense are trying to do. Someone who knows the game.
McNabb knows the game and brings a valuable perspective as a quarterback who played against a lot of defenses at the highest levels in the game. Will he stay in Syracuse during the season? Will he attend practices, watch film of opponents, learn the strengths and weaknesses of each team, learn how the Babers offense works, etc?
If so, I support this. All things considered, I want a Syracuse grad, with connections to the program, who is currently close to the program. I want someone who is articulate and knowledgeable. I am okay with giving him a second chance to build his career after football. I don't expect announcers to be perfect. If he runs into the same problems here however, he has to go.
If Donovan isn't willing to stay sober and put in the work to do a good job, then we should look elsewhere. I don't know much about Adam Terry and can't comment on him. I like that Julian Whigham attended practice regularly last season and was not afraid to tell what he saw. I don't want a cheerleader, I don't want a homer, I want someone with insight and the courage to speak their mind.
