ESPN alert just said Babers playing 2 QBs

Or Tommy hasn’t been able to seize the position outright. I’m a little disappointed that one of the younger guys didn‘t seem to factor into the two deep but they have a lot of time yet.

None of it surprised me. As we've all said a million times, TD has some abilities that most QBs don't have, but has some tendencies that most QBs want to avoid. GS wasn't just a depth building transfer. Different kind of QB who was recruited by the best of the best.

The two 2nd year guys were very lightly recruited. They were development projects that probably weren't going to be ready until 3rd, maybe 4th year. Morgan's play against Wake/BC might have moved that up a bit, although the Louisville game was what you'd expect of a lightly recruited true freshman on the road.

No need to rush Lamson. He's in a great situation, can develop in normal time.

You are most likely going to need them both throughout the year. Skill sets very different but even if one is out playing the other you will most likely see them both getting meaningful snaps versus ACC opponents at some point. I think they will both be good but neither great nor pull away from the other
I literally do not think I could tell you the last season we made it through with only one quarterback. I’m assuming it was with Nassib.

Which, PS, is Almost a decade ago.

Agree , except last line, with transfer portal the normal time may be a thing of the past.

That’s true. And given that he’s from the west coast, it probably increases the chances. If he sees an offense that fits his skill set and sees a path to leap JM/DM, we should be fine.

But that wasn’t the end of the story. ED was QB1, then got an owie vs FSU and Tommy did enough for us to win. Then when ED was having a bad day vs UNC, Tommy won us the game and created a bye week of anxiety that seemed to light up EDs competitive nature and the rest is history. We don’t win 10 without them both.

Usually, 2 QBs is bad. But if the camp competition hasn’t figured stuff out, the season can still work.

The BIG difference in your example is the fact that TD came in when ED was banged up. There is a difference between coming in when the starter gets hurt vs. rotating two QBs when both are healthy.

Both guys are competing hard except some people are under the assumption that TD isnt battling back. They think he's the same player he was last year. Totally exclude the possibility of any development or growth. Some assume Shrader's legs automatically makes him better at this point. There's so many things you have to consider when making these decisions. The new guy is always the savior. I look forward to the ongoing competition.

Personally, totally separate from the TD v GS discussion, I just prefer to have a mobile quarterback for Syracuse.

Just my 0.02 from my personal fan perspective. I just have never seen us have a truly monster OL where we will ever be able to just let a guy sit in the pocket and play pitch and catch. Which, btw, I'm totally fine with. I get we aren't a monster program that can get that kind of depth and size.

For this year? Let the best man win.

i just dont like a coach who actually says we are going with 2 qbs.

fluckin really??? in 2021 you say that??

dont prepare us, dont patronize us...if you feel you need to make change at QB, then do it. we will all likely be in agreement.

dont give us this 2 qb nonsense, especially when it most likely means that we will see it play out the way scooch said in post #62.

if the plan is to work schrader in like Tebow & Leak, then do it.

just dont announce it, that wreaks of amateurism.

Agree.

If the incumbent starter was getting it done, GS is never brought in.

Writing is on the wall.

This feels like a bad breakup that is going to take way too long.

I like the toughness of Devito but I have seen enough from him.
The bad OL killed him 2 years ago and it broke him last year.
Nice tough kid but I am glad we are going to get to see GS in game 1.

He atleast gives me optimism he will have pocket awareness and not make the same mistakes every game.

There's no tape of Schrader running our offense...what a weapon in our back pocket. (sarcasm font)

Agreed about Lamson and really like the fact how he can see how Shrader plays in a similar style. That will let him see how the play calling will map to his skill strengths. Lamson hopefully is watching and learning.

UNC game both were healthy and ED got pulled due to performance. TD shared some reps with Rex last year. TD shared some reps with that JUCO kid the year before.

The view some have that Dino has ridden with TD hell or high water isn't true and it will be even more evident this year. Dino has played 2 a lot over the years and it was obvious since the day Shrader signed that it would be the case this year.

He shared the info to let the air out of the balloon with the press a bit. Take the hit now, now by next week it's a smaller story.

Easy team management stuff

not worried at all. What this means is that in his loyalty to TD and to the team chemistry he KNOWS he need give TD the starting nod. What it also means is Schrader is better but will have to bide his time/show what he has in a two qb system for a while. And if/when TD falters he'll be the number one man. Keeps team chemistry, he doesnt jump over TD until he earns it on the field, thus, earning the respect of his teammates who will be ok with the situation in that scenario instead of being anointed the starter over an experienced well liked well respected kid who has put in his time. Not worried at this point.

If by the 5th game we have the same situation then I'm worried my 8-4 to 6-6 type prediction is in jeopardy and we're on our way to another long season. Hoping for the best.

Good points, def sets the stage for Shrader to take over by ACC play if not sooner.

Agree with what you’re saying, but I don’t think there are many here that don’t think TD battles hard or looks good with the green jersey on.

it’s when it all goes live…

I think he knows...but he wants to see both in live game action.

We should have our #1 QB by Albany. The other will be a backup or possibly a situational player when the game is still in doubt.

BL: these guys aren't sure fire 5 star talent...both are low 4 star guys. I think we can win with either. TD needs a solid OL and GS needs a more accurate arm.

The counter argument that I’m not sure I believe, but could be made:

The OL for his two seasons has been atrocious. If he can trust his protection, I think it will go a long way to his productivity.

kids should be brought in all the time to push the starters, we are just used to 1 qb per 3-4 years.

and that is sad.

we also were burned, the last time we had a high end QB transfer come in, i refuse to be had again.

i want to see it on the field and id prefer, to only see 1 QB per game.

if TD sucks v the underbelly of the schedule, which happens again to be the month of September, then we will all see it pretty quick. that rutgers game seems to be the boards anointed changing of the guard date...it might be too early, it might not, but not beating rutty to go 2-0 is not good.

i dont like babers language and his thought process.

every kid knows on every team who the starters should be.

this is not Rec baseball where everyone bats and everyone plays.

this is major college football at the P4 level.

if TD was beat out, his ass would and should be on the bench.

the loyalty to the team?? the loyalty to the team is...to play the best players and win ballgames.

these young men are old enough to be able to put their friendships to the side and roll with whomever the coaches go with.

if shrader comes in on the goal line and starts doing jump passes then fine, if he comes in on the 3rd series because thats what the bill walsh script said...then we've got a problem.

not only at QB, but at HC.

Who's goona tell Dino?

I still think we should play both at the same time. Two quarterbacks, two running backs and 2 receivers. Noah's Ark.
