But the problem was the staff was telling everyone that Carlos was great.

He actually looked great in the exhibitions. It was hard to find detractors at that point.

Then the season started and we all had an oh moment.
He was the third best player on Hofstra. I don't want to rag on him because he's probably a good kid that works hard but Red needs better judgement in putting together a roster. There is no way you go into this year thinking he can be your starting PG in the ACC.

JJ was playing so well it looked like it may not matter but there goes that.

JJ was playing so well it looked like it may not matter...

That's an interesting take. He was playing well, but it did matter... because we nearly lost to 3 tomato cans and haven't beaten anyone all year.

I don't think it would have mattered if JJ stayed healthy or not, this team isn't/wasn't going anywhere.

TCU made Lampkin lose 70 pounds between his frosh and soph year. That year was also his best year ever.

Lampkin played with three NBA players last year.

Lampkin has not been and is not in shape.

All back injuries are serious, especially for someone his size, especially for someone his size and his fitness level.

He doesn't look fat. He looks stiff. He's got sciatica. His legs go dead. You can see it.

Those two recruits aren’t reason enough to keep Red if he has a historically bad season, which appears to be where we are headed.
Melo and friends NIL money could be key though. That’s probably as important as the recruits.

A.D.J.W. has made three home run hires in Brown,Legette and Gait who are polar opposites of their predecessors. Early on Autry appears to have lost his team in both seasons. This program cannot afford to be run in the ground any longer. There is one person who has the knowledge, expertise, strength and would get instant respect from his players and that is Jay Bilas. .

Do you mean Jay Wright?

Do I believe that we have NIL issues that will keep us from being a Top 10 team? Yes, absolutely.

Do I believe that we have NIL issues that keep us from being a Top 40 team? No friggin way.

The 35th best team is making the NCAAT. The 40th will make it 9 times out of 10.

NIL issues is an excuse for not getting a Top 4 seed but it is not an excuse for actually making the NCAAT.

Your second statement may be just wrong . Re-calculate

And the NIL will come with a new coach or documentation that we can actually win.

Drake was 28-7 last year and was a 10 seed. They lost their coach and essentially their whole roster. They hired their HC from D2 Northwest Missouri State and have a completely new roster. They’re 7-0 with wins against Miami, FAU and Vandy.

The more point it to being an NIL issue, the more excuses we give the staff. If we hired the right coach the NIL thing would almost be moot.

Great people and great assistant coaches don't always make the best head coaches. There is nothing wrong with that. We need to accept that and move on. You can give Red 10 years it doesn't matter it will not work. After almost a year and a half of coaching, he has given Syracuse no identity on either end of the court. We do nothing well from year to year. Syracuse shouldn't be a place where someone "figures out" how to coach.

Open the checkbook and get a real coach. There are a couple in the Big East that we can and should be able to poach.

All of this. Fran showed us that there’s money to be had. (And in general I'm not sure where the NIL negativity comes from; even if CNY isn't loaded, we've got plenty of rich and famous alumni and a serious NYC connection).

The problem is accessing the money. People who have lots of money almost always are that way because they expect solid returns for investments they make it. People that get a big payday and don't do that are usually people that *had* lots of money.

And there’s not a lot of promise in returns from basketball right now. Heck, I don't even know if I'm going to keep all my tickets next year; it's to the point where it's work for me to find friends and family that consistently want to go with me.

I agree the team would have a hard time making the tourney even with JJ, but IMO due to a lack of interior athleticism which is another glaring hole that was not addressed well through the portal.

As a head coach, Red has shown he's a great recruiter, maybe a B to B- coach during the season (in game, prep and practice), and very poor as a GM in getting the right combination of players

B is Generous.

I'm still agnostic about Red.

In his defense, next year's class looks to be very solid. Also, although our NIL$ now seems reasonable based upon what we have to pay those guys in that class, it may or may not have been enough for this year based upon who we couldn't land from the portal.

Furthermore, it is a far cry from "going to Syracuse to play for a Hall of Fame Coach" and "going to Syracuse for somebody who has not Jim Boeheim and has never been a head coach before." I'm sure that played into some of our swings and misses this past off-season. That also plays into the talent issues we are currently seeing on the court as well as any coaching issues we are currently seeing. It may or may not have been a good argument for hiring an established name, rather than Red, to replace JB. Not my call.

Given the guys who have committed for next year, plus the NIL$ that seems to be there and how it might translate to the portal, I am willing to have some patience with Red. There are few schools would fire an alum who is in his first year following a legend. Following a legend was never going to be easy except in the minds of JB's most fervent critics.

All that aside, I will always watch every game and root like crazy for SU. (Old Man Comment About To Follow) When I was a student on the Hill, I sat in puddles on the cold concrete steps of Archbold, among not a lot of fans, watching Ben's storied career end in a no-so-spectacular fashion. Not to mention what came next. That sort of thing gives one perspective and patience.

Also, I must admit that the portal has changed how I react to losses and suckitude. We have so many new guys that I don't really have an emotional connection to them like I used to. There was a time when you would develop your fandom for the players over a 3-4 year career at SU. Not anymore. Even some of the new faces will be gone next year. Hopefully I will have learned their numbers before then but who knows. My level of recognition and attachment is about the same as for the players on teams of my sons' various alma maters. I watch them, but when the game is over, it is over. I never thought I'd feel that way, but it is what it is.

how bad does this year have to be for us to question red after this year ? when i say question i mean fire. (ex: if we win 9-12 games do we stick with him no matter what)

Those two recruits aren’t reason enough to keep Red if he has a historically bad season, which appears to be where we are headed.

I hope you’re right. I am so done. It’s time for someone from the outside with some creativity and juice
Red’s not getting fired after what happened to Starling, nor should he be. Westry hasn’t even played, and not because of his knees, but because he got mono. Lampkin is clearly hobbled. These are the three best players on the team. Few coaches in the country can overcome that.

Carlos was brought in as a backup. Yeah, the staff hyped him up after they struck out with Leffew. What were they supposed to say? There were no other PGs of consequence in the portal, except Richmond, who was never coming back. If you bought into the coachspeak disguised as excitement for Carlos, isn’t that on you?

Dick i hear many of your points. My interest in wins/losses has dulled to the point of indifference. I think college hoops as a whole is in trouble based on the moving around aspect of these teams. There was continuity and ownership to a program prior to NIL. It's just gone now. At least college football is a singular once per week thing that feels a bit more interchangeable.

I have a bigger issue in the Syracuse basketball industrial complex. I always felt like it was in good hands to remain viable. Boeheim certainly was a massive reason. Even at the dreadful end, we still had Jim Boeheim, HOF coach, as the main guy. It made us matter. At this point we're not viable, not entertaining, and probably becoming irrelevant. That to me is a major issue. I just hope the university is not deliberate here.

If Red can turn it around get us to 20 wins this year i'll be the first to admit he's learning on the job and he may be the guy for the job. I just feel like i've seen enough from coaching, managing the bench to think this may be going the wrong way fast.
