I'm still agnostic about Red.
In his defense, next year's class looks to be very solid. Also, although our NIL$ now seems reasonable based upon what we have to pay those guys in that class, it may or may not have been enough for this year based upon who we couldn't land from the portal.
Furthermore, it is a far cry from "going to Syracuse to play for a Hall of Fame Coach" and "going to Syracuse for somebody who has not Jim Boeheim and has never been a head coach before." I'm sure that played into some of our swings and misses this past off-season. That also plays into the talent issues we are currently seeing on the court as well as any coaching issues we are currently seeing. It may or may not have been a good argument for hiring an established name, rather than Red, to replace JB. Not my call.
Given the guys who have committed for next year, plus the NIL$ that seems to be there and how it might translate to the portal, I am willing to have some patience with Red. There are few schools would fire an alum who is in his first year following a legend. Following a legend was never going to be easy except in the minds of JB's most fervent critics.
All that aside, I will always watch every game and root like crazy for SU. (Old Man Comment About To Follow) When I was a student on the Hill, I sat in puddles on the cold concrete steps of Archbold, among not a lot of fans, watching Ben's storied career end in a no-so-spectacular fashion. Not to mention what came next. That sort of thing gives one perspective and patience.
Also, I must admit that the portal has changed how I react to losses and suckitude. We have so many new guys that I don't really have an emotional connection to them like I used to. There was a time when you would develop your fandom for the players over a 3-4 year career at SU. Not anymore. Even some of the new faces will be gone next year. Hopefully I will have learned their numbers before then but who knows. My level of recognition and attachment is about the same as for the players on teams of my sons' various alma maters. I watch them, but when the game is over, it is over. I never thought I'd feel that way, but it is what it is.
