Future Campus Framework Discussion

As the school moves to build more student housing on campus, south campus will become more and more vacant. Really emphasizing the potential mistake of not building a new facility on south campus with ample parking to tailgate.

Oh well…

Once South Campus students are completely moved to main campus what is the plan for South Campus? Has this been determined yet?

Since the brain is not fully developed until you are 25 that should be the typical age of freshmen in college!
So what do kids between 18-25 if they’re not in college?

I think it's more they got caught in a short term bind when more kids said yes than they expected and they needed housing right away vs. waiting for new builds to come online.

As someone who used to stay in the Sheraton, I dont mind getting a nice new hotel vs. staying in the old rooms there though. It was dated. let students live there.
Can't beat the location on game weekends though. I wonder if students living there is a 5 year solution and SU will gut the Sheraton and rebrand it again as a hotel in the early 30s?. I guess we'll have to wait to see how Micron, I-81 and student demand looks in 5 years.

I have heard rumors that the university is considering building retirement/55+ housing in South Campus which has been successful on many other campuses across the country.

Retirement Living With a Campus Twist

Texas A&M has massive alumni presence around the university. Many retire in College Station, buy season tickets to everything, including theater and music. All benefitting TAMU. They are friendly, tight knit with much in common and wealthy. For a city smaller than Syracuse, College Station has all the perks and amenities of the major cities.

If SU does similarly, it could be a great thing for the university and the city. I have no doubt some officials will screw up any plans.

ASU did something similar I believe. I heard it’s amazing

Duke did that years ago with a luxury hotel, homes for sale and luxury apartments in Duke Forest. They've attracted well-heeled alumni back to campus.
Kind of sad to go back to that point of your life. Move on. (Edit: the thought of it reminds me of a HS friend who hired us for his mom and dad’s Medicaid. He always brought up HS. I remembered none of the things he talked about.)

Place will be empty from October - May. Snowbirds.

Some, probably. Not all. In TAMU’s case, few go north in April, nearly all are back by mid to late August. Most stay in town for baseball, then football. Of course, they squeeze in vacations, but doesn’t everyone who can?

I see fall/winter sports keeping most who would move to the Hill or nearby for retirement. The university would want to create special programs and opportunities for the alumni retirees, but that is relatively easy.

Florida bars are full of CNY snowbirds watching SU basketball games. Being a season ticket holder doesn’t stop people getting away from winter.
It's still (or has been) a reason to stick around and brave Syracuse weather for at least part of the winter.

I heard housing for faculty, which is definitely needed and possibly space for companies to lease and utilize students. Similar concept to what is happening around Clemson.
