Future Campus Framework Discussion

If you look at the picture, every steal beam that supports the roof lines up with the big beam that goes from the roof line down to the ground. I believe any of the concrete panels between each major beam could be replaced with glass and not have weight bearing issues.

This is how the project is listed on the agenda for this evening.
VI. New Business

1) Z-2214M1 Project Plan Review Modification Exterior Alterations-Stadium Crown Truss Roof 100 University Place (aka 905-925 Irving Avenue) Syracuse University (owner/applicant) Planned Institutional District

I survived a home renovation two years ago and learned how true Venn diagrams like the following are:

I have no reference for evaluating the $118M price tag for a new roof, HVAC, and other amenities. I will say that despite the phased construction approach over 2.5 years the schedule certainly sounds compressed.

I don't envy the people in charge of this project.

From reading the information submitted by SU to the planning commission the roof truss will sit on top of the existing structure and the footprint of the Carrier Dome won't be changing... or at least that is my interpretation.

There will be new steel bracing on the outside.

so a ring of steel around the top that ties into the new trusses and sits on the old walls? with what looks like some new stell bracing on the sides that must have some support on the ground or else they are driving it it down? perhaps steel on the ground tieing into the existing steel too?

looks like an erector set design my kids would have me try to build for xmas

I read that as saying that the roof project will not change the existing footprint. That does not necessarily mean that openings could not be cut through on NON load-bearing exterior walls for future enhancement projects (such as expanding concourses or creating a link with the Arch).

From a purely aesthetic point of view and without knowing any of the intricacies associated with it, I wish the design from the earlier leaked renderings was the one they went with. This one just, umm, leaves a lot to be desired.
I have a feeling the earlier one came with a much bigger price tag. This is apparently is all the university is willing to pay for right now.

i am going to assume the steel bracing on the sides of the building is being added to offset the added weight the new roof and tress system will place on the support columns. It looks like they are planning on placing the bracing between the existing concrete supporting columns. I hope they are sized to handle the weight of expanded concourses and new exterior walls..

Was hoping the new roof would be more than 6 feet higher than the existing one. That could provide room to add a third level of concourses and lots of private boxes user where the roof meets the stadium walls.

Which is kind of ridiculous when this is a building they’ll be stuck with for 30-40 more years (based on the “longevity” comment). It’s moronic to be short-sighted in the decision making, especially since it serves both of your revenue producing sports as well as a number of others. They need to think seriously about enhancing the fan experience.

They have plans but phase one is to take on the most pressing issue...the roof.

New exterior walls will not need to be held up by the existing structure. Think of an addition to your home. Is it held up by your pre-existing house or does it stand by itself?

An addition to your home will of course be at least partially be held up by the existing structure.

What I am saying it that it would be pennywise and pound foolish to provide only the supporting infrastructure needed for phase 1 at this time. It would be great to have the phase 1 stuff support possible follow on phases that haven't been announced or even discussed publicly yet. I hope the powers that be are doing that.

I just hope this new sound system can alleviate the acoustic issues that occur now. Since it appears the shape will be largely the same, my hopes are not high.

Either a bigger price tag or the inability to construct without interrupting a season. At least that's my uneducated guess.

Correct. They didn't want to interrupt any sports.

I don't know if they will fix it, but they can. Technology has come a long way since SU installed its "new" Bose system in 1999. I was talking to one of the guys involved in the design of Madison Square Garden's new arena at Las Vegas Sands, and the stuff they're doing is amazing. 18,000 seats, each with its own individually-directed speaker to prevent distortion and echo and all that.

The renovated Dome might not be that high end, but I'm confident that it'll be a lot better than the current acoustics.

Damn we need some Vegas money! I'll hope for the best, would be cool to go to one of the big concerts at the dome and actually hear the music clearly.

I am sure they are considering future expansion in their plans. It's an easy thing to do. They don't need us amateurs to tell them how to design it.
