To me GMac is the only choice. I understand the suggestion that you can't jump him over Autry for obvious reasons but I don't see anything that Autry has shown that makes him a better choice. As far as experience, as I think someone on this thread has already said - Boeheim got the job without any head coaching experience. Gerry brings one thing that is hard to find - the absolute commitment and will to win. He showed it in 2003 as a freshman. He showed it again in the 2006 Big East Tournament with that incredible four game run to win the Championship and get us into the NCAA Tournament. About 10 years ago in an hour long interview on the YES Network's interview show Center Stage, Jim Boeheim was asked by host Michael Kay if you could only have one other person in a foxhole with you who would you have? Without ANY hesitation J.B. said Gerry McNamara. Taken by surprise Michael Kay asked why? J.B. said "Because he's the toughest person I know." Don't be surprised if J.B. recommends him to ADJW when the time comes. If I recall correctly after Hop left there were reports that J.B. asked ADJW to name GMac the coach in waiting but ADJW said something like it's not time. (Maybe someone on here remembers better.) Given his history of wanting to keep coaching positions in the family, I'd expect ADJW to give Gerry serious consideration. And if he is chosen I'd hope all the doubters and naysayers on this Board would support him and give him a chance.

“Only” choice?

What is going on here.

Good grief.

Red's Resume:

In 2006, Autry and his family moved to Northern Virginia. In Northern Virginia, Autry began his coaching career as the associate head coach at Bishop Ireton Catholic High School. In the spring of 2007, Autry became involved in the AAU circuit, by becoming the coach of the 14-Under squad with NOVA United.

During the 2007–2008 school year, Autry was named an assistant coach at Paul VI High School. In 2008, Autry switched AAU teams and became an assistant coach for the 17-Under AAU squad Team Takeover.

In the fall of 2008, Autry was hired by Virginia Tech's Head Men's Basketball coach Seth Greenberg as the Director of Basketball Operations. Autry held that position for two years and was then promoted to assistant basketball coach for the Hokies. In the spring of 2010, Autry was on his way to the University of Dayton to become the associate head coach under Archie Miller. However, he never made it there. A position with his alma mater Syracuse University became available when Rob Murphy was named the head coach at Eastern Michigan University. Autry quickly accepted the position and remains there now. Autry currently coaches the forwards position.

Unless GMac won a fishing derby that I'm not aware of, Red would be the better candidate between the two of them.

Hot take: Autry as a senior was a better player than Gerry ever was. Certainly not as wild of a ride in terms excitement. He wasn’t going 2-15 and then burying the game winner. He wasn’t ripping off 6 3’s in a half. I wouldn’t say his “will to win” was any less though.

I suspect Jim likes him because he reminds him of a younger version of himself. Tough, stubborn, fiercely loyal etc.

Should be noted Red also played pro basketball for 10+ years.

Remember right after Hopkins left, Boeheim gave McNamara a ton of the high profile recruits. Seemingly trying to groom him for the job. He whiffed on them all — who knows if it was his fault or the lack of the head coach involvement. Regardless, our recruiting hasn’t been the same since Hop left. There’s a reason for that.

Your points are the epitome of anecdotal evidence.

Following your logic, though, we kept in the family with JB and went on probation twice. Not to mention all of the off-court incidents with several players over the years.
Bernie Fine. Fatal accident.

Feel like we actually had the talent level built up fairly good in 2020-21. But….that fell apart in a hurry.

Absent some heretofore hidden GMac super power, or an objective measure by which to differentiate the two, it would be a PR suicide to hire the younger, white, subordinate over the older, more experienced, black superior. Suicide.
P.S. It would also be wrong, on a number of levels.

You forgot to mention his high motor.

And let’s be real: G-Mac didn’t win a title because of will. He won a title because of Melo.

Stopped reading after “only choice”, that’s such a close minded, lazy, and beyond ridiculous take.

With all due respect to Hak and G-Mac, I’m sticking with Melo as my final answer.
We maxed out at sweet 16 the next year without him….still a good team.

He probably wouldn’t have won it with a team of scrubs. We had a solid team around him that played well together. But yeah - he was that good. Definitely one of the better college b-ball players I’ve seen.

i'm surprised people have such clear opinions on gmac and autry...I personally have no clue how either would do as a HC and not sure how anyone does.

IF they wanna just continue with the same system as JB and play the 2-3 etc, then, yeah, I'm not down with them taking over...

but if they are ready to do their own thing...they've paid dues and bleed orange...i'd be down to give them a shot...

I dont think anything we've seen over the last 10 seasons reflects on anyone other than JB...I dont think the assisttants are responsible for decisions JB has made and makes...they have very little autonomy or input, imo

but i could be wrong.
Perfectly said. Best post I’ve seen on this subject yet.( Although you don’t have much competition)

No. They can not. For reasons I am not going to go into, but it will never happen. Chancellor and BOT will never approve that move.
100% wrong. They can and most likely will.

I mean...Is this serious?
ok not really understanding ur point and how it really pertains to the topic or topics here at all. Don't you believe in evolution or technology? I mean that kind of debunks everything that you said in this message of yours that I still don't understand besides you giving us the dimensions now and then and an absurd statement in my opinion. People have talked about numerous times and again it's common sense like I bring up in the beginning that of course the players I mean they say the players are technology advanced or faster and stronger than they were in the Jordan era and you're talking about 20 years prior to that come on doesn't hold any water bro
