GMAC / Blackwell / AO to Siena

I mean it’s Siena and they won 4 games last year. The bar there is low.

I’m happy for Gerry but let’s give him some time before saying it was a mistake not to give him the SU job.
I suppose part of that is whether he wanted the job. He may have preferred this option of not directly following JB, cutting Red off, and getting to learn the head coaching job outside the pressure cooker of an ACC program. He is a competitor, but might have been getting counsel to be prudent also. Frankly, he might need to step up from Siena before being ready for the ACC also. He is developing his own "staff" also to bring with him along these moves also.

ETA: also Gerry would have also been handcuffed here with middling roster and not enough NIL compete.
True. But they already have more wins than us.
And frankly if you watch one of the Siena games you will see the huge difference in coaching, effort and execution.

As for NIL, I dont even know if Siena even has much of a NIL budget.
He seems to be doing ok regardless.

No clue if that was the case but who knows.
I will say this though. If we stick with Red and his coaching does not improve, I think Gerry has a better shot making the NCAA tournament with Siena than we do with Syracuse.

The winner of the MAAC tournament gets an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. They just handed the first place team in the conference a defeat so that is, believe it or not, not outside the realm of possibility
How twilight zone would that be!.

Siena absolutely has a better chance than we do. We first need to qualify for our tournament and Gerry does not need to beat Duke (or a team that does beat Duke).

Actually they need to qualify for the tourney too. I think they only take 8 teams and there are 13 teams in the league.

Thank you for the clarification!
I miss the good ol' days when all teams made.

Both teams have 8 games left. Siena is tied for 6th place and play: (1) a team tied for #1; (2) the team they are tied with for #6; and (3) the 6 teams below them in the standings. Barring a collapse, they should qualify for their tourney. They should get a bye.

Syracuse is tied for 14th. Cannot believe that as I write it. Although we play the team we are tied with, plus the 3 below us... we also have more teams above us that we have yet to play (4). We "should" be in if we avoid being upset more than twice. If we go 4-4, we will finish 14-17. If we go 6-2, we would finish 16-15.

My take: regardless how Red performs as a HC, we're going to regret having GMac coach elsewhere.
All credit to you staking a claim on a take early.

A lot of people are getting ahead of themselves though.

GMAC, objectively, has accomplished very little as a head coach.

I'm not making any comparisons. I'm not making any future prediction. I'm simply stating that if you evaluate Siena and GMAC's season objectively, the reality is they're currently having a losing season.

If GMAC is a good head coach the results will eventually catch up. As of right now, he still has a lot to prove.

I didn't want Gerry for the same reasons as Red. Inexperienced and we needed a clean break. That said, Gerry appears to have his kids playing harder and with better fundamentals.

Well, lets pretend that Joe Blow is the Siena coach.
Joe Blow inherited a team that was a train wreck and only won 4 games in total last year.
He brought in most of this years team, so he started from scratch.
They are currently 11 and 12, and they have already played most of the top teams in the conference. In fact, they just knocked off the top team in their league, giving them only their second conference loss
Of their remaining eight games, only two teams have a better conference record.
Chances are pretty high they will end the season with a winning record.

So, objectively, has Joe Blow done a good job as coach up to this point.
As a Siena fan, would you be satisfied?

You're giving him credit for things that haven't happened yet. Why are you doing that for Joe Blow?

Laying out what has already happened, has the coach described above to this point done a good job.
I don’t say this because this is Gerry McNamara, I say this frankly for any coach who took over a team in those circumstances and has accomplished this much already.
