How does coach k do it?

I like Coach K, and I like his assistant coaches (all of whom are former Duke players with whom I hung out in Beijing at the 2008 Olympics). I just don't get the irrational hatred for K and Duke here, but folks are entitled to think whatever they want. If these guys were SU players and coaches, this board would be having a lovefest with them.

lot's of respect for Coach K. See Dukie V as exhibit A, as far as why I get super irritated with them. With exhibit B being the fact that there have been just far too many favorable calls in the vast majority of games I have watched them play in for me to believe it's a coincidence.

I think it's because Duke is made up of guys like Lenny Dykstra/Sean Avery/AJ Pierzynski - guys that you hate, but would love if they were on your team. For me, I hate Duke and hate Coach K...but it'll be a sad day when he hangs it up. because some of the fun of college hoops is hating on Duke and Coach K.

You are correct. I think he got homesick and left. I think his homesickness was also the downfall in his marriage. If only Kim K was a hoops fan that whole tragedy could have been avoided.

It's not irrational to notice the love fest the refs have every year for duke. They get bogus calls and get away with egregious fouls probably more than any team in the country.

I also met Coach K and he was a very nice guy. I think they end up with a lot of high effort guys that are annoying to play against. Duke is also always pushed toward the front in the media. Most teams wouldn't mind having their players project the attitude seen in a lot of Duke teams.

All of their players flop and a good number are cheap-shot artists. Pretty decent reasons to dislike the team (not the coach).

They are taught to make the referees make a call... flopping is part of what Coach K teaches...though he doesn't call it that in his camps.

I should add that Coach K handled his post-loss press conference really well tonight. I'm pleased they lost, but it's nice to see a coach who can make jokes and not act like I would after a loss.

Duke is hated everywhere. This is like saying, "I don't get why people hate the Yankees? ARod is a great guy."

Bottom line is he is one of the all time greats of college basketball, is an upstanding man with unflappable integrity and he has built a program and legacy which is envied all across America. He has an amazing impact on most all his players and although he places value upon winning, he puts people first.

Just for the record i wasnt knocking coach k, hes obviously an incredible coach. It just amazes me how year after year he gets the same kind of annoying guys. Laettner, wojo, battier, scheyer, now the plumlee brother and austin rivers. (and yes i know im missing about 1000 other guys) You just take 1 look at these guys and you hate them already.
