Oh, so you're an old guy too.

If that makes me old, then sure. Last I checked adjectives related to age were relative.

If you're grumpy because I said some of you were old in reference to your take - I apologize. I should have used "traditional" or "conservative".

I think your connection of recruiting success and uniform style is a false correlation.

Virginia Tech is struggling with recruiting because it's nearly impossible for a head coach to be in place for 30 years and not get stagnant eventually.

Penn State is a regional icon with a savvy, engaging head coach.

Oklahoma State is an isolated outpost in a tough conference with a hot-and-cold tradition and a mediocre head coach. They've got a wealthy backer, but that's no guarantee of success.

Exactly!

There is no correlation between funky uniforms and recruiting success.

For the record, I walked in to this thread because of the interesting information you passed along at the very beginning. Thanks for that.

This thread is like the anti-Michael Cohen threads. Every freaking thread becomes about the same thing.

I don't care what the team wears. I want the team to win games.

The adjective use was yours.

What you don't get is that most of us don't have a huge problem with change or style. We prefer our uniforms of the McNabb or Nassib era because they scream Syracuse. They were great looking uniforms and they said Syracuse ORANGE.

Most of us hate these uniforms not just because they are clownish looking but also because of the screwing with the colors.

We are a school whose name is the Syracuse Orange. Our mascot is Otto the ORANGE. We merchandise products than at are heavily ORANGE. We promote ourselves as the ORANGE. We have ORANGE outs.

Take the exact same uniforms, even if they are butt ugly, and make them ORANGE pants, with a white top and a blue top and an ORANGE helmet, then have a one off, and you'll see many of the complaints go away.

...and PLEASE, change the number font to something readable.

That a big part of the ugly. The crayola crayon look.

The uniform issue is clearly a hot button issue.

I know it is for me. I admit it.

I have a real problem watching others - who are new to the University - mess with what I feel is an important tradition.

It has happened three times during my time watching the program and every time it has coincided with lousy football.

I want to see my team on the field - not some unidentifiable team in clown uniforms.

So, yes, for me it is a hot button issue.

Sorry that I have repeated myself so much during this thread - I guess I can't help myself.

Which is understandable. Admittedly, I've only been following the team closely since Marrone took over, so my sample size is mostly limited.

The whole debate really feels like a lot of things that are happening in the USA and around the world- We're mad because we feel powerless. The uniforms aren't well-liked, but no one will listen to the fans about how we don't like them. We get corporate speak from the higher-ups, if not straight up ignored.

Like so many other things, we're drowning in PR-friendly answers without the results we want.

There's nothing wrong with disliking the uniforms. I just hope it can lead to something.

I have no problem with any of that. It's a reasonable take.

These sucked.

I get that frustration, I do. I hope I haven't been disrespectful... not my intention - honestly.

There are way bigger issues that the admin could address to do to field a better product. I'm glad that they are trying new things. I hope the next iteration is a better mix and both honoring of our past and cool and different enough to squeeze anything we can out of them recruiting-wise.

I think a mix of the two would work. Lose the stripes altogether - from the pants and helmet. Keep the combinations - play with the chrome helmet. Add some nice one offs with a white helmet, or a an all orange with a blue helmet. Add more orange to the grey. Lose the funky numbers and the stripes.

The Coach Mac uniforms were simply great.

Classic.

They were so good that Illinois and Florida tried to copy them.

There is no need to change something that is good and connotes success on the field.

i never minded those first uniforms. shoulder stripes are collegey. lots of orange, readable numbers, nothing too stupid. i'm not that hard to please with this stuff, it's just that SU does so much weird stuff

although i don't care for the no helmet look. that's pretty unsafe if you ask me

Dude. Not one kid finds that success relevant. Not one. They don't know about coach Mac.

They are also dated.

Yep. We'd be known for experimenting and kids would be more aware of who we are and we'd get in more living rooms.

Not any more. Since everybody is 'experimenting', experimenting doesn't draw anybody's attention any more. And many of the experiments the various school are conducting look specifically similar. That's because they are really Nike's uniforms, not the school's.

Again, I really wonder how you know so much about what they know.

I find it hard to believe that college athletes don't know about McNabb, Harrison, Freeney and others who wore the classic SU uniform.

And, by the way the uniform is as outdated as the Alabama uniform or the USC uniform or the Michigan uniform or the Dallas Cowboy uniform.

In other words, it's not outdated at all.

By the way, just to remind you. I don't care about what the kids "know" or how they feel about the uniforms. The uniforms are those of the school and of the longtime fans. The players are given the privilege of playing in our uniform. And if they don't like them, they can go to a clown program like Rutgers and play in all black for all I care.

I care about the program and the brand.

And the clown uniforms that we wore last year were ugly, hideous, indecipherable and reflective of a loser program.

And that's not what I have supported over the years.

The traditional uniforms are great. Period. They should be brought back. Period.

You said it better than I did.

Agree mostly - I was assuming he meant when Oregon 1st started doing it.

I do think a better designed version would still help. I haven't seen those stripes or numbers anywhere - so those are custom from Nike (and the part that most needs help).

No not one .. like a star Ohio LB who was all about Ernie Davis and seeing the Heisman ... these kids have no knowledge of SU history ... a little hint he chose SU and SU's history over Nebraska ...

That's the problem. You are living in the 50's or something. You assume that the players should just be happy to be invited to play here?

Are you oblivious to the amount of money that is flowing into college football right now - that the player see zilch of? The O'Bannon case flipped the switch. This is not the olden days and it's not the military and you're not boss hog wrangling your cattle (or worse?)... The dynamic is that we're doing all we can to bring in quality kids who care about education and leadership - and yes how they look and what chance they have at the NFL. In some ways we are at the mercy of the talent. That doesn't mean you cede control to the players in everything - but it does mean you bend towards giving them more say in their experience.

You're a fan of bad analogies so indulge me. Happier worker - under the thumb, this is how we do it or hit the road OR Hey, we got you a new coffee machine for the break room and think casual fridays is a good idea? Treating your workforce with respect and giving them say, build loyalty and connection and A TEAM. Saying "My way or the highway" leaves you with miserable workers and substandard product. I'm not saying let them decide to change your company name or whatever - just invite them in to the process.

It's a balancing act - and it's recently been tilted away from what the old guys like - and now they are upset. Aww. Buy a retro-jersey to wear to a game and have some coffee and cookies to talk about the good old days before money ruined your sporting experience.
How am I living in the 50s? Have you been sneaking a peak at some of my ipad set lists? Wishing you were also getting a steady diet of Elvis, Johnny Cash, the Bill Black Trio and Bill Haley & His Comets??

jealous?

Yes, they should be excited to be invited to play here, and I bet if you ask them...they will say so.

Hell, for most of the kids, Syracuse is their top offer, if they want to play for Delaware because the helmets and unis look like Michigan, let em. They're non too concerned if they run out there in Orange or like a civil war reenacter, they're running out there as a D1, P5 player...you can be damn sure they're happy to have been invited to do so.

Here's another 'bad analogy' for you...at the team meals, they can choose either the steak or the fish...the peas, the carrots or nothing...for at the end of the day, we just 'told' them what to eat, the end result is their choice. Everything for them is controlled, everything.

I never said they shouldn't have a say, but we need to control the choices, for the uniform is the 1st thing, the last thing and everything in between anyone will see. There's too many games on TV now(not for me, keep em coming...18 games NFL anyone? I know wrong thread...) and we all have to check the standings by Wednesday to remember how good the teams we watched on Saturday stack up.

Lets put the 'Syracuse' back in the Syracuse football uniforms.

Is that so hard?? Really? Is it???

That's different - he had a personal connection.

I love when recruits reference The Express too - but unless you grew up a fan Coach Mac is distant history with no bearing on you as a high schooler at all.

Sure they are excited. And thankful. That doesn't mean that we should limit the amount of say they have in their time here.

If you read the whole thread I'm all for a mix of something new to pay homage to the Syracuse Orangemen look we all love along with keeping it fresh for the kids.

I'm not the one with extreme positions in this thread, though I've been treated as such.
