JT III Out at Georgetown

"It wasn't the "groundswell of support" that got JT3 fired. Both the President & AD were firmly behind keeping JT3. It was the Board seeing the downfall of "Georgetown basketball". Tremont Waters wanting his release & players possibly transferring was the final straw for the Board. The Board overruled the President & AD and fired JT3."

Since it doesn't sound like we are going after Waters, or at least haven't been connected yet, this reason alone should be why we do pursue. Helping add to the turmoil at GT is good enough in my book, although this is probably going to be a net positive for them.

What prospective coach would want in on a situation where neither the President nor the AD wanted a change? Good luck recruiting someone for that scenario.

Steve;

I just went and took a look at the GU Board of Directors. I actually worked with one of them.

The very idea that this group demanded that JTIII be fired is LUDICROUS.

The President did not want to fire JTIII. Not because he didn't absolutely feel it needed to be done, bit because he didn't want all the blowback and he couldn't have JTIII's blood on his hands.

So they engineer a deal where the Board is seen to make the decision. Now the blood is on the hands of a bunch of faceless people who live all over the US and DeGoia and the AD can say, "Hey, we didn't want to but the Board (whoever they are) made us do it."

I got messed up on this because I didn't see how it could be done. But these clever buggers figured out a way to do it and claim plausible deniability.

I didn't think it was possible to lose to a double digit seed 5 out of 7 in the tourney either. Georgetown is capable of amazing things.

What a clusterbleep. You just KNOW that the people who matter will know whose hands the blood is dripping from. Circular firing-squad time.

Paul Tagliabue was the guy who got JT3 fired.
He whipped enough support from their Board of Trustees.

You are probably right. He has been passed over for an NBA job. Ewing has paid his dues rising up from volunteer to lead assistant coach for Charlotte.

I think Georgetown has to call him if they are going to get the wrath of JT II.
How does that start fresh?

Tagliabue is on the GU board. But how did you get this info?

If you go on to the HoyaTalk Board the list of coaches they think they ought to consider matches the list our optimistic posters also listed as candidates for the SU job when JB leaves.

But Mike Brey was mentioned too.

I think I have to go Douglas over Owens. Owens technically played more in the 90's than 80's. Douglas set an NCAA record and played in a championship game.

You'll get no argument from me -- The General is my all time favorite player from SU.

Owens was the #1 recruit in the country, one of the most multi-talented versatile players we've ever had, cover of sports illustrated before he ever played a game, etc. I think some discount how good he was, because injuries derailed his NBA career. Kid was awesome.

But those three along with Pearl were the top talents from the golden era, IMO.

One of the partners in my law firm(GU booster) said it was Tagliabue as he was the only guy with enough juice to put his face as the guy to oust JT3 and piss off JT2.

It actually sounds right. Tagliabue is sort of untouchable.

Not all the alums were thrilled with the JT Jr "kidnapping" of the program. He took it from being the Georgetown program they knew to a sort of National Black college program. So they never were fully on board. And they were horrified by some of the antics.

I watched a GU game with three GU alumni once (not vs. SU as that wouldn't have worked) At the end of the game they interviewed Reggie Williams, the forward from Baltimore. Poor Reggie had a great deal of trouble making himself understood. He probably set the record for "Ya knows" in an interview.

The GU grads I was with were stunned.

Brey makes sense as someone who played in DC and is an excellent coach, but I just don't think he'd want to leave the great gig he has at ND. Yes, you're the #1 coach at the school, but I think Brey would want to can the cultural element that the elder Thompson established within nanoseconds of taking the job and that wouldn't go over well. Look at Brey's teams at ND and look at the teams at Georgetown. No other Catholic school recruited like the elder Thompson did and it was supposedly fully backed and encouraged by Father Healey, the president at the time.

I never like when people look at 18-19 year old kids being interviewed on national TV and use it to judge their intelligence. I consider myself a relatively intelligent person, but put a camera in front of my face, and I turn into a stammering idiot.

My guy says the targets for Georgetown are
1. Shaka Smart 2. Tommy Amaker 3. Ed Cooley.

JT Jr to Healey was a miracle worker. And he was very interested in "building a bridge to the community" which really meant the Black community in all but NW DC. And the fact that he was successful and brought visibility to the school was even better.

I was wrong about GU's firing of JTIII so to continue on guessing and being wrong, I can't see GU hiring a white coach. Now you are sticking your thumb in the Thompson's eye again.

So GU's coaching decision is made even tougher.

The craziest possibility is Patrick Ewing. When Ewing was interviewing colleges coming from Cambridge and Ringe HS, one of the requirements was that the colleges had to commit to giving Patrick all his tests verbally. He had trouble processing written tests.

These days that would be called "Learning Disabled".

This wasn't "stammering". This was a person having a great deal of trouble putting English sentences together.

I have watched hundreds of these post game interviews. This was way outside the range of the most nervous player.
