Kansas Can, SU Couldn't Postgame Thread

Winning a lot in the ACC won’t get us in the tourney. We missed out on the Houston win. Couldn’t capitalize vs. a wounded Kansas team. Will get trounced by Tennessee.

This tourney was there for 2 wins. And we failed to capitalize. This, along with 0 signature OOC wins, will keep us out of the NCAA tournament.
Might as well end the season then. We should forfeit the rest of our games and call it a day

If Red doesn’t have them in a gym shooting 100 free throws a piece he needs to. Also our guards need to practice 3 pointers.

We have a lot of hustle and grit but not a lot of fundamentals. We can’t shoot or rebound.
Hire Rick Barry and have him come in and work with several of these guys. Should have been done long before now. The coaches have seen these guys in practice for over 8 weeks. Inexcusable.

All of his previous coaches should be ashamed of themselves. Feels like this is fixable. This was my first time being able to watch this year. JJ’s hitch and Kyle shot were shocking. How does that happen?
Did you hear Robbie Hummel on the broadcast suggest bringing in Rick Barry to teach the underhand shot? And he was being completely serious.

But Kyle is a big problem. He looks at the FT line like a kid trying to get the ball near the basket by looking through his periscope eye and then misses terribly. Really surprised Autry hasn't worked with him - no offense today.
That big problem was 4 additional points, max 6 if he makes both off the 1-1.

He’s not without criticism because at least 70% from the line is doable, but to focus on 4 free throws like the tons of perimeter bricks wasn’t the main problem is asinine

His free throws in the clutch are an issue, he is not a big problem.

Apparently nobody on this coaching staff cares about free throw shooting. How can you watch these guys in practice for 8 weeks and have guys look like this from the line? Hire a shot doctor and work hard at changing this. Really. Good grief.
"The Shot Doctor", Herb Magee, lives near me and I see him occasionally. I'll ask him if he wants to come out of retirement next time I see him.

Past 2 games:

Kingz 7-19, 2-12
George 5-17, 2-9
Starling 8-21, 3-9

20-57 (35%), 7-30 (23%)

That's basically why we're 0 for 2. We needed these guys to step up, certainly more so given Freeman's absence, and they have all been bad.
We can have all the scheme and coaching discussions, and I'm not saying that's not a problem. But players also gotta play, and many of ours are not.

JJ, Kiyan, and Kingz might want to consider a future in masonry if hoops doesn't work out. They laid enough bricks tonight to build a new wing on the MGM Grand.

JJ 3-13 FG, 2-6 3FG
Kiyan 2-12 FG, 0-6 3FG
Kingz 3-9 FG, 1-5 3FG
FWIW, the reason I skipped Anthony and included George is because Kiyan is not supposed to be a primary offensive weapon. Everyone acknowledged this summer that he's not a high-impact frosh. I can't throw the guy under the bus when veterans are shooting as bad, or worse.

Brutal loss. Shot selection wasn’t great, but we still missed a ton of shots that would normally go in. 2-2 is still on the table and would probably have the team on the right side of the bubble. But this is currently a wrong side of bubble kind of team right now.

As bad as the FT shooting has been, rebounding is more troubling imo.
Rebounding is important, but this is a game you win with better shooting. They didn’t lose the rebounding margin by much when you factor in all the missed shots and offensive rebounds.

when j.j. starling has as many defensive boards (5) as your starting front line combined... trouble.

Some of our fans acted like we were entitled to beat Kansas because we played Houston tight for some moral victory. This is why I was pissed we didnt finish it. We are dangerously close to being in a non-conference hole once again. we need to win out the non-conference games if we want any sort or comfort.

And we're generating a ton of turnovers, which is great.

Hopefully Donnie gets healthy or it's a steady diet of Kyle and JJ to the line for the next few months.
