Kelly's Presser for SU

I was thinking about 1967 and playing UCLA out there. As I recall, their great Quarterback and Heisman winner Gary Beban played that game with bruised ribs. Look how that worked out for him. I think he was done early third quarter.

I think that game was on TV, when only ABC showed college football.

Because PR people are good at what they do sometimes...

And coaches, too. You don't think that at least a grad assistant puts together the initial profile information about the next opponent before they go watch film? That's how Jose Mourinho got started at Barcelona - doing quality, detailed scouting reports of the opponent.

book instead of wimbush hurts our chances significantly. If we can knock him out, not that I want anyone injured, that would help our chances significantly.

I don't know about that. I know Book is amazing, but we have had far more trouble with Babers' defenses with athletic running QBs than we have with pocket passers. I'll take my chances against a guy who will try to stand in the pocket against our pass rush.

The fact that I could hear all the questions was a little off-putting at first, but I adjusted to it.

Eh if you've actually been paying attention, you've been able to hear the questions at Dino's press conferences all year after week 1. But nice cheap shot without doing any research. SU deserves some criticism at times but it's just amazing how our own fans just love to take uninformed cheap shots just to get a "funny"

Regarding a way for a Syracuse victory would follow like this:
1) Win the turnover battle by 3 or greater.
2) cash in on these opportunities
3) Special Teams need to be special for the Orange a Blocked punt / KR that type of thing
4) make the game a video game score 40 something to 40 something. If you do that you have a great chance.
5) if the Irish start Wimbush you may have a slightly better chance of winning but only slightly. the Irish coaches know how to gear the offense to Wimbush's strengths. He is a running QB. However his decision making is not great at times. Book can run but is a QB first and generally makes good decisions.

Rewatch the FSU -ND game you will see how they designed the game with Wimbush's strengths in mind. Also when FSU picked a couple of his passes what the coaches did next. They called no passes and ran the ball 11-12 times for 97 yards and a TD. This is against a quality DL with a lot of talent. They were 17 or 18 at the time against the run.

What I would do if I against Syracuse is the following:
1) Run the ball much like they did to FSU to wear down the D. Clemson was able to do this against your D. Syracuse does not have the depth to stop this over a period of time.
2) run at you DE's and throw screen passes a lot. The depth and size of your DL against a larger team will have problems with this.
3) take shots deep to keep the safety's honest
4) let the Irish D do what they do best.
5) minimize ST mistakes, TO's and penalties

I listened to this week's PC on Facebook and I could barely hear Mark Larsen's question, or Dino, for that matter. This has happened every week to me on that platform, and with Dino's answers usually being evasive, I turned it off. The sound quality up on YouTube shows the following questions were louder.

The only thing that amazes me nearly to the level of your indignation at my attempt at humor is how quickly our fans will snipe at other fans in defensiveness at fairly benign jokes. Heck, even in your defense you have to resort to pointing out that "after week 1" proviso. Which means that my post wasn't uninformed, just a couple of months out of date. People still make jokes about Gerald Ford. (shrugs)

I have no problem criticizing when due and there are definitely still opportunities. But I give credit when they make an improvement. Sorry if that bothers you. Enjoy your cheap likes for your funnies.

This is a mea culpa. I've definitely been critical of the production quality and seeming lack of attention to detail in the press conferences. It has definitely improved for the better recently and the AD deserves credit for addressing it.

And that's really all I'm saying. But that doesn't mean I think the AD I feel the university still has some opportunities- the recruiting day event for donors sounds like it could definitely be improved and that's an easy thing to do for donors. I also feel that not having an open scrimmage in the fall is a missed opportunity. I think that's mainly on Dino - but still an opportunity that I think he has to be open to give something to the diehards. Just in general I think they could provide better incentives for donors. I can't go to the games living here in Kansas but it would be nice to get a little better momento than what they give out now. So I'm not definitely not saying the AD is immune to criticism. But when I see improvements like I feel the press conferences are a better viewing experience, the football pre-game tent, the rewards program - I will give them credit for that.

Sorry for hijacking the thread!

Not a bad list. I wouldn't say we need to win the TO margin by 3. Even in a clean game, we have enough firepower to score and our D is pretty good on 3rd down and in obvious passing downs. It's not enough to simply minimize special teams mistakes, IMO. If we do what we do on KO and PR - we'll have a field position advantage most of the game. I'd also throw in there - we want to play from ahead and have for most of the season, even vs Clemson.

Basically - if you find yourself in a 40-31 type game and you're losing the special teams field position battle and you need to throw it? This is our kind of game.

If you're ahead by 14 and running the ball on a long drive in the 4th, you'd see some epic ranting on this forum.

Yeah, I thought there was a little arrogance in his list.
If we are +2 in turnovers, we will win the game. We won't also need a blocked kick and a big return to beat them. The original poster probably didn't actually see the Clemson game, and probably didn't know that we were still ahead with under 5 minutes to go.

This will be a tough game. But it's a winnable game if we play well. Not superhuman, just play well, and do what we do. Dungey has to be accurate with the passes (NC State Dungey). If he does that, that will open up the running game.

that last 90 yd drive to win the game skewed the stats in clemsons favor, it was pretty even at that point with us winning and also winning when the QB went out. complete either of the 2 passes that were simple and we win and the 4th down stop never happens

The game boils down to Dungey. He needs to bring his A game. In the past month we've only seen that vs NC State which concerns me. He needs to go through his progressions because there will be open receivers. He needs to find them instead of tucking and trying to run if his first read fails. If he brings his A game we can win by 7-10. Anything less would take a season-best performance from the defense and at least +3 in turnovers.

Agreed while not staring at the receiver. Saw Louisville watch his eyes and the Irish are better and will take advantage of it and not drop errant throws. ED has to be smarter on his throws to Custis which too many are forced as well. I'd love to see ED have a great game on the National Stage.

it was strange to see him trust WRs in the nc state game and then not trust them in the UL game.

its been awhile since he threw well outside, hopefully this is that game.

still waiting for the offense to have a complete game. Even scoring 40-50 it still feels like a lot of sputtering at times. we can run but not really when we want too. we can pass but not all the time. Just need the bad throws to be in the good spots and not miss the wide open guys.

I'm troubled by how badly he missed some passes these past couple games after he was so outstanding against NC State.

I can see that point but it is less about what book does running or throwing, to be honest. It's what he doesn't do when he throws (turn the ball over) and what he does when he hands the ball off (he makes good reads on the read option plays).

Wimbush is a tantalizing athlete but you end up in situations where he really struggles to throw the ball and if you can get penetration he makes bad decisions on that read option that lead to situations where he has to throw.

With Book, the offensive line opens holes, Book makes good decisions which keeps them in positive down/distance situations and then when he throws it's from a position of strength which helps since he also makes better decisions and has more accuracy. It also helps the defense b/c you're not giving up short-field scores off turnovers.

I don't know, just think that's a totally different team with book under center.

Really feel like it was a missed opportunity not to give TD more run the past few games. He's led them to 2 ACC victories and provides a completely different look opponents have to account for. When Eric doesn't trust the receivers (or doesn't trust himself to make the throw) the offense sputters. And that's a problem when we rely on outscoring people.

one QB leads the ball into windows, so when he makes late reads his throws get into trouble since he doesnt have great form on those throws

one QB throws into windows, unclear that he makes the right reads with so little data, so some throws look better, others are what was he thinking.

IE.. ED first throw at LSU vs TD throw vs UNC..

you hope the SR doesnt make that mistake now.. but he made the throw that killed us vs Pitt.

we are playing with house money now.. we got thru the SR game and the home games, now its everything goes to win the last 2 or 3 or 4 or 5...

A+ ED and we can win, C+ ED and we will be seeing TD.

I mean we are 12 in the country not sure why some are surprised he’d take us seriously...

Wasn't the QB for NC State a consensus first round pick and maybe the best pure QB in the draft?
I get that Book's stats are out of sight. I'm just more scared of a running QB getting to the second level against us, and taking it to the house a couple times. I've seen it happen too many times. If we are going to get stops against ND, I think it will be from getting to a pocket QB on third down.
