KenPom #68

96th defensively makes me feel a lot better knowing we brought in a former HC this offseason for that exact purpose.

For the sake of conversation:
  • end of 23-24 season: #80 (20-12 red's first year)
  • end of 22-23 season: #118 (17-15 relied on freshmen)
  • end of 21-22 season: #69 (16-17 jb only losing season)
  • end of 20-21 season: #42 (18-10, bubble and then s16)
Last year (23-24), we were pre-season #105.

Is Englestadt really considered a defensive guru? I didn’t know that but hope you're right.

Honestly I’ll take it to kick things off. To me this is pretty accurate to start the year factoring everything in. It has us as 9th in the ACC and 13 overall teams in the top 100. The 13 in the top 100 and 11 in the top 75 would be much better from a conference standpoint.

So, I don't know whether Englestad is actually a good defensive coach, but I'll say that the rumor was he is defensively-minded. Before becoming a HC, he spent time as an assistant focusing on teaching defense.

We also heard Straughn is a good offensive mind. I don't know if that's true or not either.

To be clear, I'm not saying these guys are or aren't good offensive/defensive minds, just saying that's what some have said and we'll have to wait and see a couple seasons to really know.

pre-season efficiency rankings in the transfer era are...interesting.
Torvik is fun because you can play with the rosters and see how it impacts the team's rating.

But building ratings with a foundation of returning production/continuity is almost impossible these days. Makes it fun if you fancy making a wager or two, though.

That #96 defensive rank feels like a ‘legacy’ projection. We have too many unknowns for that to be a meaningful take. But our success/failure starts there—stopping people.

Put it on the bulletin board, Red.
