It took me time in my journey to understand the difference of this and the mindset it takes. Just from an observer I think Red loves being a HC but doesn't love coaching. I heard people talking about how great a coach Pitino is all time and how when he was fired at Louisville he went to Greece just so he could keep coaching and developing players and grinding. I am sure Red works hard but it takes a special grind to Love to Coach. Look at the Hurley Bros. I think Bobby Loves to be a HC and Danny Loves to coach. Thats the difference in Coach Cal and Pope at UK that I see. Call loved being a HC and Pope loves to Coach. I believe JB loved to coach until about 2012, maybe it was moved to ACC and def when his sons came I think he just began loving being a HC. Gerry M from what I see loves to coach and the stories they have reported is that he grinds and is a super competitor... We need that.. Maybe its not Gerry but we need a guy that LOVES TO COACH!

I think this type of unfounded speculation is useless. We don't know these guys and we aren't qualified to judge their love of coaching.

Cali... Cali is that you

I certainly agree with your theory that there are guys that love to coach vs love being a head coach.

That being said, I don't think the identification of who fits into what is that easy. For example I'm not convinced you have grouped the Hurley's correctly. It seems like you have grouped them based on your theory that those who love to coach are more successful - and you have grouped the Hurley's to fit your underlying theory. Grinding as a trait at the highest level is an attribute held by both types.

Lets get back to your underlying theory that the loves to coach are more successful. At the highest levels there is no evidence that is true. In fact I would argue it's potentially more incorrect than correct the higher you go up the food chain, where that personality might be a better fit.
