Maryland Gameday...

Final stats:

the sky is not falling...it's february and you're playing a team that makes the final four every year...

BUT...you really have to wonder if the cushy home indoor dominant schedule, mostly against second-rate teams, is good for team growth...every year without fail they look significantly worse playing outdoors against real teams than they do inside the dome...

and while i get frustrations for march...gait has agency too...he's the head coach and has an offensive background. he cant be an innocent bystander...

at least rutgers got pounded! 3 goals!! haha
The Dome never hurt us in May in the past when we were on top.

Worst thing for this program would be getting to the NCAAs undefeated.

I really hate Maryland.

uva lost, duke barely beat st joes, hop squeaked by loyola, yale lost to villanova...denver is struggling with utah as i type this...it's february, folks. take a deep breath!

Agreed the game in the grand scheme of the season isn't a huge deal I think it's more the concern with Gait and March on another O no-show against a good defense. Gait as you noted needs to take some heat

Telling myself that weather had a big part to do with this. Syracuse shooting and passing was mostly all over the place, wet mesh can be a real big problem if not addressed correctly. I think in different conditions some of these shots go in, and more passes lead to better opportunities.

Did both teams play in the same conditions? Yes! But this is what I'm telling myself.

Brutal. That stretch in the third lost it. Two dumb penalties, a shot Rhoa had to can, a shot English had to can, and multiple IMPATIENT shots that killed the offense. In the elements like this you absolutely have to make the most of your open opportunities. 6v6 goals this game was even. MD and Tillman kept it clean with the stupid stuff and we sure as hell didn’t. The margins are tight in games like this. Possession time definitely in Marylands favor. Could have used a better boost from the face off unit. This sucks.

Leo’s shot off the crossbar was killer as well. McNaney was in their heads, as he is for most opponents. We were going for perfect placement, mostly offside far pipe, & were missing wide. To be expected to an extent in the rain but MD smartly just started putting them on cage with high % looks & it paid off. Capitalized on some fortuitous rebounds as well. McCool played well & gave us enough to win.

Crazy seeing the GB's were the same in this game because it def felt like MD scooped up the most important ones.

really ? no team in major lacrosse has more opportunities to practice in crappy weather than us.
and believe me i know cuz i shovel it every freakin day ..

Lethargic on the wings, even less of a pulse on GBs inside the restraining boxes on both ends… I can lose, but to lose because of effort on GBs makes me see red. Can’t sprint and sell out for GBs? Okay we will just do sprints the first half of next practice. Embarrassing effort there today. Go play men’s league and don’t bother suiting up then.

disappointing uncle leo couldn't avenge his last second cage call from last season.

Bit the bullet too on the B1G + for this game. Ugh, what a brutal second half for sure. Not sure what the deal was coming out for that 2nd half, but just pathetic. It's easy and rather convenient to just dismiss it as weather being a major factor, first road game, etc. Unfortunately, one thing that can't be simply dismissed, is the fact that SU is Maryland's bitch with this now being 7 straight losses. Very irritating to say the least. :(

Hard to comprehend how the offense scores only 7 goals. It seems to me that their problems against good teams are based on how they react to pressure from D. When the going gets tough, they tighten up. It's like a sunny state pro football team with a flashy offense that travels north and wilts against a physical team. Adjustments is not a word in the coaches' vocabulary. March is the same old March. Tillman is Tillman for a reason.

Defense was solid in the first half but gave up quality shots in the 2nd. McCool was ok but not great.
I would not be surprised to see Ippoliti in against Harvard.

While playing conditions were the same for both teams, when I saw the weather forecast for this game I thought, not good. Particularly not good for a fast tempo, finesse offense that relies on quick passing. Since SU really has few dodgers, my concern with the conditions grew as the game progressed. A cold, wet game was beneficial to a very good defensive Maryland team in the second half. And if we hope to advance to the Final 4 and beyond, we’re going to need to do better than 50/50 at the X. Maryland kept us from controlling possessions in the second half. Long season ahead, but hopefully we learned a thing or two from this game. Can’t take a flashy sports car out in the rain when you need the jeep.

Gary has had All time Offensive players on the womens side, And never won the big game. Now it's the same crap on the mens. The offensive staff made ZERO adjustments. McCarthy is speedy but he's incredibly tiny and is net -. Birtwistle well just watch the games he's been horrid.
I wanna see Peyton Anderson replace Mccarthy, and Leo moved to Attack. Also stop putting the 2nd line in so early...

I think McCool played well enough to keep his job. This loss is on the offense and wing play.

Offense not converting on the open looks in the first half led to playing tight when Maryland finally started running away with it in the second. Maybe a practice or two on back to basics shooting without trying to be fancy or trick shots. Felt like in the fourth there was no off ball movement either compared to the first half that was getting guys open. There definitely wasn't any on that last possession.

Face offs an adventure if Mullen couldn't cleanly get it, and even then a couple times things weren't great.

Defense didn't seem ready for any adjustments made by Maryland in the second half. Probably also tired as it felt like Maryland had the ball for most of the half.
