Meathead Football

we need coaches that look like this! LETS GO!!

I was wondering what your opinion of Gilbert is. He is the guy that is going to make the O work or not work. I like the 2 QB's he brought in.
Im not sure about him yet. This is not a ideal way to start his tenure. He's never had to implement and teach under these conditions. I will hold judgement until next year. He's had a solid reputation. I like that he has experience with Dino. Most important thing is for him and Dino to evolve with each other. Figure out what's working and what is not.

I like meathead for 1 reason. Oline is developed and coached. Its why many programs run it. The most bang for the buck, with the least talent.

Overall, we have higher rated oline recruits than Addazio did. He took the lowest rated oline recruits and made them #1 in the ACC.

That takes time. That time takes away from other stuff we'd like to do in practice. Certainly hope we can find that balance to do whatever we want.

Addazio is one of the best line guys in football. Marrone had a strong reputation too. That's why he was able to get the most out of them. They basically had two great line coaches. He was hands on and I bet Addazio was too.

Actually, there aren’t a “lot of power elements” in a system that uses 4 WRs in a spread, a pro style QB who does not run, and a single back. Especially not if you have a backfield of Devito and Jordan, as we rolled out in September.
Do you know what I mean by power? Formations dont dictate power run plays. Gap blocking scheme is power. We run a combination of gap and zone scheme. We are multiple. We have TE, HB sets also. We have multiple TE's sets, there are times when we are under center and run power (we do that a lot). We have extra lineman sets, unbalanced sets. Who they decide for personnel is based on their game plan for each opponent.

The thing with data is you can read it differently. That data could suggest our pace is slowing down. It could also suggest we have allot of 3 and outs. Does the data set you are harvesting from denote how many possessions on offense they have a game?

Here's the thing: we've not had an efficient version of this offense yet. Even in 2018 with ED at the height of his powers we were good for an abnormally high amount of 3 and outs.

Our pace is slowing down AND we're having a high amount of 3 and outs.

After last year, I couldn't believe our offense could be worse. Guess I was wrong.

I don't think we should be surprised *at all*... one more time for the kids in the back

- OL injuries
- RB opt outs
- No spring ball
- new coordinator
- much harder schedule
- Rex at QB for too long

I mean - anyone here looking around and being like "yeah, all the pieces are in place"

lol My whole HS staff wore those shorts. Those were a thing back in the day.

Back in the day, I remember Kaiser was calling for an O Line coach that wore those shorts. It was a fantastic take

Agreed

BCs line went from exceptional, to less than pedestrian, this year. (Something like #90 on the run.) Guys that "could", no longer "can". You'd think the improvement in the pass game(#39), would give the run game more of an advantage.

In your opinion, is this more a factor of scheme, coaching, or focus?

It looks like BC is trying to be a more explosive team. They were a great running team with Addazio but the offense had limitations. In the process of opening up the offense more their commitment to the running game has suffered. They might have agreed to take a hit now in hopes of them being a more balanced and explosive offense in the future.

With an Addazio developed Oline, with strong base (meathead) fundamentals? I can see that working in the short term.

What about a few years from now? My assertion is that they are far more likely to look like our Oline from the last few years. Without a few special skill players? How does it not fall apart?

I understand focus on 1 area, but I'd take balance. Especially when you're recruiting at the lower end of your conference.

Yeah they need a balance. Their OC has a lot of experience with pro scheme concepts. I just think he likes to open it up at times too. Only time will tell

I'd take a pro scheme. It requires the right amount of meathead. BALANCE.

Pro set with Hough at fullback and Tucker at halfback, Taj and Queeley as the wide-outs and Hackett or Benson at tight end. First two downs, run between the tackles with Hough, sweeps and off tackle with Tucker, swing passes to tucker, medium range passes to Queeley and the tight ends over the middle and the bombs to Harris. Morgan or whoever can occasionally run a draw or an RPO to keep the defense honest. One third and long replace Hough with a slot guy.

Just because you keep saying it doesn't make it so. Although maybe you're right about dominant, but we can be damn good and have been in the past. And I realize it's not 1970 anymore and we aren't trotting out the wishbone. Nobody said not to use misdirection, etc. Fact is the current offense is broken and puts the defense back on the field way too quickly way too often. Both times we have tried to move to fast high scoring offense it hasn't worked, at least not yet. If you look at the past 18 years(9 years of WCO/AirRaid, 9 years of more traditional ball control), then you see that we've been to 1 bowl game in 9 years of WCO/AirRaid and 4 bowls in 9 years using what we would consider more traditional NE style football. That's just over 10% vs almost 50%.

Even under DeLeone we did not have highly recruited OL - we did develop them and we relied upon technique more than brawn.

I don't think we will ever be able to simply pound the ball.

And we haven't been able to do that consistently since the days of Ben Schwartzwalder - when we did have physically dominant OL.

Who runs a base I formation now? QB's are rarely under center. It's just not how the game is played.
