New QB Coach Kirk Martin (TX)

Why does this hire give you the feeling that he sticks around for a while? I’m not arguing that he won’t I just don’t get why hiring a TX HS coach gives you that feeling? He could just leave and take him, right?

Look, if some SEC school throws a boatload of money at Dino, I can see the possibility of him leaving and that will be that, regardless of any other circumstances. In general, I think Dino is confident and content in his position here, enough to not give a flying ef about any questions of nepotism or lack of college experience for Martin. Dino gets to play half his games every season in a climate controlled environment, perfect for his offense. Doesn't have to deal with the psycho administrations and fanbases of the SEC, plays top quality competition in the ACC, has the support of the AD, etc. So, I don't think he pulls his new in-laws out of the state they've lived in their whole lives, just to uproot them a year later. I think he wants to build something here, which includes building a new pipeline to Texas, a state that regularly produces some of the top talent in the country. Bonus, it appears that Martin can actually coach. Just my two cents...

Eh, I don't see a huge risk though.

Not sure if this is what he meant, but in my mind it's a huge risk in terms of intrafamily relations.

I trust Dino, but hiring a family member (even through marriage) is problematic if that guy needs to be fired or things otherwise don't work out among staff members. It's like the Shafer/Idiot McDonald situation, only with actual family members involved.

Oh...I understand...we might play them but I'D rather do a H/H or a 2 for 1 within that triangle or Tulane.
I'm sure Kirk Martin knows some people out there. Again, not trolling, and only suggested it because of the P5 openings on the schedule do to Wisconsin.

SMU definitely yes... Baylor ok...but not sure how Dino feels playing them.

Baylor is actually starting to recover so by '21 they might be pretty strong.
Beat the indecensy out of them while they’re down. Would be happy with Texas Southern or Rice as well.

On that note, I wonder if having a Dome to play in was a draw for this guy as a QB coach?

I mean, couldn't hurt, right?

This is a Harbaugh type move, savvy and aggressive.

Love that Texas is now a focus for recruiting. I Gotta believe there is a specific kid or 2 they have in mind for Martin to deliver. Either flipping one of those A&M commits or '19 '20 Manvel kids

Dino is such a Boss!

Martin's son is a part-time starting tackle at Texas A&M and may be eligible for a graduate transfer. He would be a nice pick up to fill the slot left by McGloster and to give the young guys another year to get stronger.

Less of a risk? He coached the QBs at Manvel and sent 5 of them to play D1. There really is zero risk here. He utilizes the Briles spread concepts so there's going to be much less learning curve here. Just because he hasn't coached in college doesn't make it a risk. A high level coach is a coach is a coach.

Serious question but why would an AAC, MAC or CUSA level QB coach be any better and less of a risk? Especially when they don't know anything about the offense.

Don’t read too much into my comment because it isn’t me being critical. He understands the concepts of the offense but HS to CFB after a long HS career is s big jump. He hasn’t recruited before (although it is TX so maybe he had on the sly) and with much bigger, faster and more mature (well, maybe not always) players he will have to adapt to a new level of game.
All that being said, he’s got one hell of a resume and I like coaches that look far and wide for the right assistants. Dino’s offense is outside the box, why shouldn’t his hires be the same?
All THAT being said, I’d say he has a 75-80% chance of succeeding and I personally think that’s high for HS-FBS.

We're not gonna do anything like that.

Need to play some Texas teams now. Texas Tech has a 2o21 P5 schedule opening.
I agree with your general premise but respectfully disagree with TTech. Texas Tech is the one team that will not help. We would be better served playing UofH or Rice or SMU as they are in major markets. TTech is in Lubbock, several hundred miles away from major markets. We should focus on the P5 schools first, then the G5.

Is TTech too strong of a P5 team? They have to add a P5 opponent on the schedule for '20 and '21 now that Wisky is gone and there aren't many choices.

It is nowhere near civilization. Plenty of teams within the Houston/Dallas/San Antonio (includes Austin and College Station) general area. As TM stated, Tulane is only four hours away, Lubbock is a 9-10 hour drive.

A couple of quick points...

1. I think everyone has the whole nepotism chain backwards. My guess is the only reason we got this guy has QB coach is because of his relationship to Babers... I don't think Dino is doin this guy a favor, I think its Martin is doing Babers a favor. If Coach Martin made it known he wanted a college gig, he could have had his pick of schools in Texas, and in general the Big 12 to go to... yet he choose to go to one 1500 miles away. You don't think Jimbo would find a place for him on his staff, especially given that someone mentioned that Martin's son is on the team? I do agree that it could get awkward if things go south for some reason but I don't see that happening... this guy is a proven commodity.

2. I do agree with the take that this move makes it more likely that Babers is here for the long run. Sure Babers could pick up and leave and take Coach Martin with him... but if you are thinking about leaving even in two or three years I would think the last thing you would want to do is convince a family member to move 1500 miles away and turn their life upside down. Especially given in point 1... Coach Martin would not lack for any suitors. I think with this this hire if we go 7-5 or something like that next year, and some just below the big boy program comes calling, Babers is much less likely to jump ship. He is building roots in Syracuse.

My suspicion is that that the SU AD has stepped up its game and is giving Babers whatever he wants to make him happy.

You must be from Texas? If Syracuse went down there and won a shootout vs Tech, football people (which is everyone in Texas) across the whole state would take notice.
Nobody in the major areas watches TTech unless they are an alumnus or their team is playing TTech. Too much other good football nearby.

I was on a Texas A&M message board and was pleased to see that Martin is very much a known commodity there. They heard that he was leaving for a college job and were worried that he was going to the Longhorns. I like this hire a lot. Here's hoping he adjusts to CNY.

Making a W-L prediction on the basis of hiring a HS HC-FBS QB coach? That’s faith.

Well thankfully he's not the Offensive Coordinator. Coordinators get fired. Position coaches not so much unless they are REALLY bad coaches.

I don't think you have been paying attention to the trend of HS coaches making the move to college coaching.

What college football teams see in high school coaches

“Jazzmin is 6-foot-3 and has got about a 38-inch vertical. Koda is about 6-foot-6, 310,” Sumlin said earlier this month. “I’ve got dibs on the first kid.”
*****After this hire, there is no debate that their children belong to SU.

Which brings me to some questions:

1. How cool of names do these people have? (Jazzmin, Koda, Dino). My daughters' middle names are after Nina Simone and Keely Smith so I am partial to Jazzmin.
2. Will there be an opportunity for Koda to be a graduate transfer?
3. If Koda isn't a pro prospect, is he not immediately a graduate assistant or something at Syracuse when he's done with A & M?

Is TTech too strong of a P5 team? They have to add a P5 opponent on the schedule for '20 and '21 now that Wisky is gone and there aren't many choices.

Yes. We need 1 P5 Team in OOC. Too dangerous and too far from any recruiting area worth anything

What does bigger and faster have to do with coaching QB’s ? Besides, this is a guy who sent 11 players to Division 1 (6 to Power5) in 2016.

Mississippi – 2
TCU – 1
Houston – 2
SMU – 1
Texas – 1
Indiana – 1
Florida – 1
Memphis – 1

In fact since 2010 – (browsing rvls database) he has sent 42 kids to play Division 1 football; 21 to Power5. I think he’s been around bigger stronger faster kids for a while now.
