we still had to settle for 3 field goals (yes 1 is on the ref) and only 1 touchdown inside the red zone. If we want to have any chance of getting to 6 wins this needs to change in a hurry.

Now with that said this was a much needed dominant win. Take out the 1st drive of the game and the defense was absolutely perfect. DyShawn Davis had his best game of the season, and Brandon Reddish turned out yet another great game. Poor Wake has absolutely no offensive talent.

Offensively we were good, not great. Once again we showed we can move the ball 20 to 20, but then everything goes to crap. AJ gives you everything Hunt did, but more athleticism, and better accuracy. I can see no possible scenario Hunt gets his job back.

And how about this Cole Murphy kid? Amazing.

You're absolutely right. This was a great win, but the offense still isn't punching it in when it needs to. I actually look at it as they had 2 TD's (that one pick call was absolutely ridiculous) and 2 field goals. That's improvement but it still needs to be better. 20-7 without the defensive TD's, and I actually think their play gave the ball to Wake Forest a little bit more than normal. Offense wasn't out there as much, and it seemed that in the 4th quarter we were content with running the clock down, and getting out of there with the victory and no more major injuries.

Agree with everything you said, but Hunt having no chance to get his job back. Long's been better than I thought, but I don't think he's grabbed the job by the throat completely.

As I've said in other threads, Hunt's best games last year were when Lester was in the booth/calling plays, and I could see him taking the job back in this offense. I think Lester's style might match Hunt's strengths better and I think it will still be a competition.

After the 2nd. series by wake the Defense settled in and controlled the rest of the game...offense needs improving, but we have the frosh to improve as the years go on.

Can't really take much from this game other than potential down the road.

Agree. Maybe we should temper the excitement about Long too. Only saw the second half, but the D clearly won this ballgame. Long survived and that's good and all but so far he's played vs. vanilla schemes in the FSU game, much of it when we were already down by a bunch, and vs. a decent but overburdened WF d. And maybe Lester played it safe today because WF's O was so awful but he didn't buy himself any longterm security today either. Those last 3-4 series on O were fugly.

We're all looking for a ray of hope and I hate to piss on everyone's cheerios but Long's performance to this point isn't that far from Hunt's early audition last year. We're going to need a couple more games before we start collecting funds for the statue.

I think after Micah's TD we went pretty vanilla. Still nearly broke one off with McFarlane.

Offense is going to be a work in progress. We changed coordinators and start a true freshman. There's no getting around that.

Long's performance on 3rd down is what's most encouraging to me. It's as if he looks forward to the challenge.

Future looks bright. I still think next week is going to look really ugly on O. But I also think that's ok. Long will get some great experience playing in that atmosphere.

I don't have as much confidence in Hunt as I do in Long, especially on 3rd down.

Hunt's early success came against nobodies. Long's early success came against conference opponents.

How dare you talk about Wagner like that.

It was Wagner, right?

In no way am I saying AJ is a savior or anything, but I think we have more potential with him at the helm. The whole offense still has a long ways to go.

Very proud of Emerich today. Not a bad first start for him either.

Yep we didn't miss a beat with Emerich. As a whole the offensive line was very good again today. Palmer got beat pretty bad a couple times, but that was a very good Wake defense we were able to move the ball against.

Are we throwing out the BC game completely? Look I'm not trying to make this into Hunt vs Long as this win today was huge, but it's way too early to declare we've got our starter for the next 3 years guaranteed.
I was, because I thought you were throwing out Hunt's game against BC last year when you mentioned "Hunt's early audition.":noidea:

Yes, definitely a step up in competition from Wagner and Tulane. Hunt was also lights out in those two games, not just functional. The same kinds of posts we're getting today about Long were being written about Hunt then. Maybe by the same people. It's just too early to anoint anyone anything.

Redshirt soph correct? Makes me feel better about that position especially after facing a good defense, absolutely. And as you wrote Murphy...just another freshmen making good things happen. Making it look simple.

Completely wrong statement. Long is a much better player than Hunt will ever be. If you can't see that then you're a blind man. Hunt is a fourth year junior he's at his ceiling. This is as good as he will get and it's not very good.

Yes Emerich is a redshirt Sophmore. I had high hopes for him and Knapp when they were brought in, hopefully Emerich still has a chance to live up to it.
