NYS: large arenas can open 10% capacity

If the semester ends toward the end of May I think its possible but I wouldn't hold my breath. Fauci's comments today that the vaccine should be available to most Americans or at least that most will be eligible by late March/April seems a bit ambitious. Perhaps for smaller states that's possible but NY is still struggling to vaccinate those 65+. The 50s and 40s demographic is going to take months and months to get through. I can't see people in their 30's less their 20's being eligible until early summer at best.
It all depends on production. If it is ramping up fast enough to start distributing to pharmacies and doctor's offices, getting people vaccinated will pick up dramatically.

Reminder J and J is one dose, why people call it a game changer. The 100 million doses bought are straight forward 100 million vaccinated people.

I believe most stadiums especially down south will be at 75% +. I think NY will get to at least 50% as well as we have six + months before fball season. The problem for SU becomes what are the regulations that have to be met for SU to get 50 to 75%+ of the building full. The current guideline for a negative Covid test is certainly reasonable for a few thousand people but is never going to work for 30,000 fans. Cuomo would have to agree that negative tests aren't required (perhaps just proof of vaccine) for SU to have any real shot of filling the Dome. I assume just proof of vaccine will be needed but its NY so you can never be 100%. Seems unlikely kids will be vaccinated by that point so interesting to see what they will do there.

The other Elephant in the room is tailgating for fball. Have already heard that tailgating is likely to be a bridge to far this fall with NY, hope that is not true.

I would think this would push more people into bars/restaurants. What those % thresholds will be at that point is anyone's guess. I just want to be out in a parking lot drinking a beer, eating some food and getting fired up for a trip inside the Dome. I hope it can happen.

Yeah, I'm curious if some people will intentionally avoid it since it isn't as effective.

I have thought about that, the J and J has less efficacy to stop infection but will prevent severe illness . Why not open this up to Under 35 healthy crowd. They are at very low risk to begin with, the J and J should be enough to protect them it would seem. I am not a MD I want to point out. So I am only making comments on articles I have read.

I'm curious too what the reduced effectiveness of J&J means with regards to transmission to others. It seems like the vaccines that are 95% effective would prevent that much better, but I'm not a doctor either.

We'll probably end up with Gold, Silver, Bronze vax cards.

"Oh bronze card huh? Yeah...sorry no admittance for you."

I think at this point, the goal should simply be to vaccinate as many people as possible, as quickly as possible. If there were enough Moderna/Pfizer to get everyone done in the next couple months, we wouldn't need JNJ. That's not the case with current supplies

However, if you prioritize the old/sick/vulnerable with MRNA/PFE, and use JNJ to fill in the gap of the rest of the adult population, we could be in decent shape. JNJ has 70% efficacy. That's better than some of the Chinese made vaccines the rest of the world is using.

The reality is we will all likely be getting a new vaccine in 1-2 years to rebuild antibodies and fight against any mutations. The more we do now, the less (hopefully) we will have to do later.

If we did Kentucky/Rupp arena math, 10% capacity would be 30K people could attend the game.
At least they learned the math in a class that actually existed...as opposed to UNC, who coincidentally, that game would be against!

has to get approved first. its schedule to seek approval by end of this month. guessing the rest of essential workers will be added to the queue once there approved

My question is, when is everyone going to come to the reality that Covid is never going to go away?

I hate to break it to you all but at some point we will have to just live with this thing. It’s a virus, it mutates, it’s next to impossible we ever fully eradicate it.

no its not.. it doesnt just appear out of no where.. but its gonna be hard to remove from less developed places.

Having people standing outside with chairs spaced as far as possible is too far but having people indoors is ok? That is questionable

There is a misconception that we have to have herd immunity to get back to normal, we don’t. The vaccines may not eliminate the virus but they are going to make it non lethal. Spread under control and people not getting severely ill. That’s where we need to get.

also the possibility that an equal number of people who tested positive for covid (~8%) in new york already have had the virus either without symptoms or not enough symptoms to get tested or were afraid to get tested as they couldnt afford to lose money by not working and were essential. once 50 %( of 1a and b groups are done it should be near 50 %) get vaccinated it will severely limit the amount of spread possible which in theory should start to lesson the restrictions by summer

herd immunity kills the virus while the otehr option allows for different variations to linger

Thanks, doesn’t change my post.

I haven’t complained about overreaching government or put on a tinfoil hat since this started but if you can’t go to a football game without a mask in September when the vaccine has (hopefully) been widely available for 5 or so months that’s going to change.

just pointing it out i agree with you. normal is going to take time just because some businesses have been lost and likely won't make it back but everyday life can return to normal ie no masks, no more limiting gatherings whether inside or out but the handwashing thing is here to stay as it should be and some businesses will go to hybrid model permanently

Same timing for me but different motive. I have a far bigger issue with banning tailgating outdoors where people can spread out than wearing a mask in an indoor sports venue.

testing needs to continue.. The faster they can ramp that up the more you can open up.. Even giving everyone the vaccine doesnt mean we dont have to keep an eye out to variants so it doesnt come back in some other form.

Shots/Booster Shots/Testing. ramp that all up.
At home rapid tests are key too. Right now you can get a prescription and do those every day. They’re not perfect but it at least gives you some indication, especially if you're asymptomatic and a front line or essential worker who can’t get tested regularly through your job. Widespread availability of those by spring/summe would be another game changer.

Probably when most are vaccinated? So...6 months?
